Cooperative market offering organic produce. Employs volunteers only. All are welcome. Earn 15% off by contributing 1/2 hour of worktrade. Call for hours. Open Tue 5:30pm-7:30pm, Thu 2:30pm-7:30pm, Fri 12:00pm-7:00pm.
I tried to visit this place but it was closed, as they are only open two days a week. There was a sign on the front that stated the store was only for members, so you may want to check before you go to see if all are really welcome.
Best place to shop in town for locals since it is volunteer run. If you are local go to an orientation to shop here, but if you are visiting from out of town make a bee line for Sundance and be sure to check out the amazing hot/cold bar before shopping there.
Growers Market is a very unique shopping experience that feels like a Co-operative from the day, but only better. It is not a place to hurry, but linger and meet fellow neighbors on line. It is all vegetarian and amazing selection of organics/local produce and bulk.
If you are local than the only caveat is the limited hours and days as of this review:
Thursday 2:30pm - 7:30pm
Friday 10am - 6:30pm
Tuesday 5:30pm - 7:30pm
From their website:
The Market is run entirely by volunteers with a consensus-based democratic process. Our purposes are to provide quality food at exellent price, support sustainable agriculture, and promote social change within our community and beyond. The top floor of our building is made up of offices rented to non-profit social change groups. The Board of Directors of the Growers Market (which includes representatives of both the food buying club and the upstairs tenants) meets once a month, and these meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend.
Growers is a place that changed my life. But thats not to say its all good either. This place can be great, but as a coop, there is no oversight, no boss, for the bosses, that is, people can be as mean, not just rude, but actually downright personal in their attacks of you. The quality control also varies greatly. If some hippie doesn't oh say put the frozen food in the freezer right away, or something else back in the fridge after the day, an entire batch of x, y, or z can spoil, and if not caught in time, still be sold.
However, thats the bad side. The good: I have met some of the greatest people ever working with and shopping with here. I have saved a ton of money on usually good, if not great food. Cooperative living at its best, and worst... but I try also not to hype it up too much anymore since it seems like it has evolved, continually. Though recently I have not LOVED the produce the way I used to, and I was weary of the flour I bought there in the summer heat.
I do love this place, but likely it is not for everyone, especially if you expect immaculate place to buy your food. PM me if you want a history of the place, truly remarkable and worthwhile.
BTW, other than dog/cat food, or "special orders", the place is 100% vegetarian, no cans of tuna and stuff. your welcome
