Meh - Edit
Being a vegan Mexican restaurant, I really wanted to like this place. The restaurant itself is very clean and is always busy. The first time I tried the enchiladas and found them bland. The only thing I liked about the meal were the chips and beans. Thinking I just ordered wrong, I decided to give it another chance and ordered what what recommended, the Tamal but again I was disappointed with how bland it was. I really like they use organic locally sourced produce but for the price and taste, was not worth it. I just don't get the hype.

Amazing food - Edit
Everything here is vegan. Makes it so easy!
Read moreI got the tacos: Three corn tortillas filled with eggplant, butternut squash and mushrooms, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro, onion and cashew cheese. Served with black beans. It was really really good, I'd like to try their other food sometime though too.
Since it is pricey (tacos are $17), I would definitely go back but only for special occasions or if I'm really treating myself :)
Pros: All vegan menu, Really good food, Healthy food
Cons: Expensive, Crowded, may have to wait for a table

Always Incredible - Edit
I lived in the bay area for about six months last year, and I can't even begin to say how many times I went to Gracias Madre. The food is incredible, although I wish they kept their empanadas on the menu longer! The cashew cheese they use for the fried cauliflower, and on a few other dishes, is absolutely delicious. The seasonal desserts are amazing, and I have never had a bad experience with the staff either. Great wine selection, too! Simply cannot say enough good things about GM.
Read moreFor those of you saying the area is sketchy - yes, if you are unfamiliar with the Mission it is not the best place to be at night. Like any big city there are some sketchy neighborhoods and I can't hold it against GM. I'm sure if they moved to Valencia rent would be much higher... It is a few blocks away from the BART so you would not be out in the streets for very long.
Pros: great food, good value

Big disappointment - Edit
Noisy environment with a very very strange take on communal dining (which is great everywhere but here). We were a party of 4 at a table for 6... which meant it was very awkward to have 2 people join us. Food was universally too hot (spicy) for all 4 of us. And we all like spicy food. Terrible waste. Even the bloody Mary was too spicy. Won't be back. The one in LA was pure joy. This one was expensive waste of money.

Thanks, indeed! - Edit
Brunch should be taken seriously, and Gracias Madre is a haven of vegan deliciousness. My wife and I arrive right when they opened on Saturday and easily found a spot at the bar. The atmosphere was super warm and friendly, yet energetic. Our bartender brought us hibiscus tea - it was a perfect blend of sweet and sour. So incredibly refreshing. In no time at all: BEHOLD - amazing chilaquiles and a breakfast burrito covered in some sort of crack sauce worthy of prayer. Every bite was so satisfying, including my favorite: the PLANTAIN FRENCH TOAST. Dear lord - I can’t stop thinking about it. Make the trip to Gracias Madre and you won’t be disappointed.

Gracias Madre’s service was a little slow but the wait was definitely worth it. You must have the tostada if you come here, as the crema was absolutely delicious. Also have the desserts because they are also absolutely delicious.

Cold food - Edit
We waited for a table for 45 minutes. Both of our entrees were slightly warm. By the time we received our entrees it was 9:30 so we didn't want to send them back to get hot enchiladas. Expensive meal for the temperature and taste of the food.

Casual place, but be sure to make a reservation. It’s popular for a reason... it’s awesome. Had several dishes that we tried and all were good. Finishing the night with warm peach cobbler with cinnamon ice cream.

Below average mexican food - Edit
We had to wait 40' for our table, because the place was really crowded. Nice decoration and vibe, although a bit posh.
Read moreThe Quesadillas we ordered were really bland and two tiny portions; the Bowl 1 had only a little piece of chorizo and the portion itself was barely enough for a dinner.
The prices were high and in relation to the servings, excessive. So we left the table disappointed and dissatisfied.
The service was OK, albeit having been offered drinks insistently even if we clearly stated that we only wanted tap water.
Before we left the restaurant a group of mariachis made its appearance and played live music, which improved the overall impression somewhat.
Pros: Decoration and vibe, Live mariachis
Cons: Posh and expensive, Little portions, Tasteless food

Great food and atmosphere! Freindly staff. We sat at the bar and had a great time. I recommend taking a cab though as the area wasn't nice if you are coming from north of mission.
