Cozy and delicious - Edit
Food was great and ambience is really nice, very japanese. As it's a bit small and cozy you may need to wait a bit, but it's worth it. There even are specific vegan sauces you get with your Okonomiyaki (soy, sweet Sōsu and Mayonnaise).

Nice Japanese traditional resto - Edit
Few vegan options. The noodle with vegetable is really nice. But when you enter the restaurant it can have meat smell quit strong as food continue to cook on the table (see picture). I was also not sure if they really make sure the vegan food never touch any ustensiles used at same time to cook meet. But except this its a nice and friendly place.

Good food but 'the vibe' was not for me - Edit
My partner got the soy meat okonomoyaki and I got the soy meat negiyaki. I wasn't really sure what the difference was going to be when I ordered, mine had a lot more spring onion in it and on top of it and no sauce on top. We were provided with bottles of vegan sauces so I could easily add as much sauce as I wanted.
Read moreI really enjoyed the food, there was good flavour in the pancake and the soy meat chunks added some food texture (not a lot of taste though). My partner enjoyed her okonomoyaki too, she only got a couple of pieces of meat though and said they were quite big and had a good flavour so maybe the meat chunks used were different in the two dishes. She really liked the sauce on top too.
This is a small place which seats about 20 people. We got there about 10 minutes before opening and a queue formed quickly. There were only 2 free seats just after opening and they were filled quickly too. You take off your shoes and sit on the floor at teppenyaki style tables. We were sat at the long bar bit and when that's full you're sat shoulder to shoulder with others which isn't really what I want at the end of a long hot day. When we left after about 50 minutes, the waiting area was full with more people looking in from outside. They have a sign up saying vegan food takes longer to prepare, so even though we ordered first two other tables for their food before us. I enjoyed the food but I don't know if I'd have been so glowing if I'd had to wait a long time for it.

Food was fine, not great but the atmosphere makes up for it. I would recommend just for the experience of going to a traditional style restaurant.

Vegan Okonomiyaki worth waiting for! - Edit
You have small but nice selection of vegan meals, including Okonomiyaki in 3 different variations.
Read moreThey are delicious and not too pricey, considering its Kyoto.
The only problem is that the place is very popular and you need to wait, but surprisingly the queue is going quite fast.
They are taking your order and preparing the food while you wait.
Pros: Okonomiyaki , Efficient service , General atmosphere of the place
Cons: Queuing

Good option for vegan okonomiyaki - Edit
Glad to be able to try more veganized version of traditional Japanese food. I picked the okonomiyaki with mochi and corn as filling and fried udons. Both were really good. They are prepared and then set in the large cooking plate on your table, so it stays warm and keep on cooking a bit. Delicious and filling.

Okonomiyaki!!!! - Edit
The ability to enjoy vegan okonomiyaki makes the wait worth it. It's a small place and very popular. We ordered the okonomiyaki and the fried noodles and enjoyed them very much! If you are in kyoto and want to enjoy okonomiyaki experience in a traditional Japanese environment don't miss this place!

Vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit
We may be the luckiest people alive as we rolled up to this place on a recommendation and waited 20 mins to eat. I loved the okonomiyaki, my only light criticism is that is has a LOT of sweet sauce on it. Super good and may return on this trip.

Amazingly good - Edit
I loved it even though we had to wait more than an hour! We knew that reservation was necessary but decided to give it a try anyway and were not disappointed. They have a good variety of vegan options to order from, and everything tasted delicious. The portions were also big! I'm looking forward to going again.

if you have to wait long, don’t - Edit
i was kind of looking forward to this place but glad i came almost when they opened. i was in line and was one of the first people seated, but a few ordered before me. i waited quite a while to get my food (there are signs saying vegan one takes longer but idk why).
Read moreas i saw from the pics of menus past, the price has basically doubled since a year or two ago. it also seems like the vegan menu is smaller than it was before. as i came alone i was only able to get one dish because i didnt want to spend nearly 40 dollars for 2 dishes. i got a side salad that i was appalled cost 500 yen when it arrived at the table. a handful of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and some fried garlic. wasn’t worth it.
while tasty, the okonomiyaki was also not worth the price. it would not be something i would go back for, nor would i invite friends to go with me. i wanted to try the yakisoba as well but like i said, i had to pick one.
if you have to wait a long time, i would recommend trying some other option in the area as you may be disappointed.

COME EARLY!
Read moreI had huge expectations for this place but after 1.5-2 hrs of queuing in the freezing cold night and an avarage meal i'm sad to say it didn't live up to it. Yes i appreciate they have a traditional japanese meal veganized, vegan sauces and nice setting etc.
Towards the end of the night it feeled like we were rushed.
SO if you come here make sure you come early so you don't have to wait that much.

Great experience - Edit
I was traveling in Japan with a meat eater, so finding places to eat that we could both enjoy was a little challenging and Gion Tanto was a total standout experience for me - I got to try okonomiyaki without worrying that there was meat/fish in it, she got to try other teppanyaki dishes, and the restaurant is in a beautiful part of Gion overlooking the river. I get that people hate waiting in a queue but we went as they were opening and didn't have to wait long, and to be able to really enjoy an affordable, delicious meal was totally worth it. Highly recommend if you are traveling in mixed company!

Bestes veganes okonomiyaki - Edit

Love love love. Such a rare treat. - Edit
I have always been a big fan of okonomiyaki from my non-vega days but it’s one of those things that really isn’t easy to find these days. Gion Tanto have done the dish proud. Super tasty and with a few things to choose from on the menu. We went for a mixture and shared, and that was definitely the way to go. Condiments all available as vegan too. Yummmm.

Nice Restaurant in Kyoto serving vegan options - Edit
We had dinner at Gion Tanto after our day in Kyoto. While they serve meat, they do have an entire vegan menu. The vegan okonomiyaki was great. There’s lots of options for toppings. They also provide vegan mayonnaise and sauces. A very nice restaurant for some traditional japanese cuisine and works out nicely when traveling with non-vegans as well!

Come here to try vegan teppanyaki on tatami mats! The restaurant is located in a picturesque neighborhood and has a very cozy atmosphere inside. We had to wait 30 mins for two people on a weeknight but I think it’s worth it! I got vegan okonomiyaki, which was pretty good- like a giant veggie pancake with BBQ sauce.

Vegan Okonomiyaki - Edit
This place has vegan and nonvegan options. We tried the vegan Okonomiyaki, one version with udon and another without. We preferred the one without udon. Its was crispy, savory, and filling. And we got the best seats facing the Gion Tatsumi Bridge. Would highly recommend that you check it out. And we would advise to give yourself enough time because it fills up very quickly and has limited space.

Bring time - Edit
The food was good (but not overwhelmingly good) and the experience of sitting next to kitchen where the cooks prepare your oknomiyaki is cool. However, we had to wait in a queue for over an hour and to be honest, the food was not worth waiting outside for such a long time, even though it wasn't bad.
