I nearly always stop in here when I'm in this area. Foodworks-Guilford is a terrific "natural" supermarket with a comprehensive selection. They have standard groceries, a gorgeous fresh vegetable & fruit section, bulk items, toiletries and more. A big bonus is the eat-in/take-away section with soups and other ready-to-eat items. There is a small eating area (with a delightfully clean restroom).
While the fresh produce section is small it offers the highest quality, freshest organic local produce out of all local markets. I stop by this market at least 2-3 times per week. I wish they opened at 8 am instead of 9 am so that I could stop in before work! Small cafe and cooler offers hot and cold prepared vegan options. After hopping around among the large and small food markets in Branford, Guilford and Madison for over a year this is my top pick overall.
An excellent health foods store, which offers a vast array of vegan products unavailable elsewhere, especially in the raw foods category. For instance, it carries Living Tree Community Foods nut butters, whose raw almond butter and raw tahini are the very best in the world (really!). The selection of OG produce is limited, but its fresh juice bar, which includes wheatgrass juice, and its freshly prepared in-house takeout items compensate.
Among the food stores in eastern CT, Willimanitic Food Coop ranks number 1, Fiddleheads Food Coop number 2, and Foodworks' two stores in Old Saybrook and in Guilford tie for number 3. (The scantily-stocked Foodworks in Chesire does not compare, and seems to me to be on the verge of closure.) For oldsters who qualify, Foodworks offers a little-publicized very generous senior citizen discount, a whopping 15%. Compare that with Willi’s 5%, and Fiddleheads zero.
Note that the stores both in Old Saybrook and Guilford are easy on-off from an exit of I-95.
The market is super convenient, has everything you could need while being on a plant base diet and love lifestyle .
The adzuki burger done in the deli is delicious. I took also a pesto sandwich done in front of me that seems as good ...
Perfect for what we need in an area where VEGAN is still not popular (matter of time obviously)
Only 1 neg point : open from 9 till 3 (for the deli side), so if you are hungry at 4 and want a burger, you have to do it yourself on the back seat of your car, old school way ahah
The main part of this store is a well stocked health food market. In the rear is a very nice vegan café where you can pick up already prepared selections or order them hot at the window to eat at the three tables or take out. Everything I have tried has been at least good, often very good.
This place is great! They have a great selection of items as well as gifts and cute bumper stickers. They even have organic toys for children! (I even wanted one). The staff is SUPER friendly, too. Prices seem reasonable to me, and it seems like they always have a few items marked down! They have a great cafe inside, which I have heard is very awesome, although I must admit never had the time to try it.
One time I bought some "unchicken salad", and when I opened it, it was completely spoiled. They immediately took it back with no questions asked! Great customer service and highly recommend. By the way, they are the only place that I can find in this area the offers Millet Bread.
