Average vegetarian - Edit
The staff is welcoming and friendly but the quality of the food is simply mediocre. I would recommend in a group as it is quite big.

Upscale presentation of vegetarian and vegan dishes without the upscale prices. If ever in Edinburgh again I will come back for dinner here.

It is broke, fix it. - Edit
Bann's has been around for decades, and they're situated now fairly Centrally in an expensive city, so they must be doing something right, but whereas they were once a rare thing - a veggie / vegan restaurant- they are now just one of many, and they've been overtaken, somewhat. I stopped eating here years ago, after one too many disappointing meals. Returning now, for a work meeting, I was struck with how it was mostly the same old menu. I had the fairly bland mushroom soup, which was a 5/10, the incredibly salty stir fried veg, which was an incredibly salty 5/10 and the chocolate cake which was dry and 3/10. Dry chocolate cake is completely unforgivable. I can only presume it is made in batches and then frozen, which is a crime against baking.

Pros: Good staff, Clean, Good coffee
Cons: Food is flat and tired., So many better options out there., Same basic menu for 20 years.

Lovely setting with tasty but unimaginative food. - Edit
Very smart restaurant in the Old Town, but for an upmarket place specialising in veggie and vegan food the menu was strangely boring. Options like chickpea curry, stir fried tofu with noodles and various salads are what I'd expect to get in an omni restaurant or gastropub where vegan options are a bit of an afterthought. The menu leans more veggie than vegan too. However the food was well prepared and tasty, portions reasonable and service very good.

A lot of potential - Edit
All in all I liked the experience at David Bann restaurant. Half of the menu is vegan, the other half is vegetarian. They aim for fine dining and offer interesting and versatile options, unfortunately, they are a bit bland and drowned in oil. But the cocktails are really good and the service is excellent.

What a great start to our stay in Edinburgh. Although tired after long train trip up couldn't help but be impressed by the quality of food and general feel of this place. I had the soup starter which was sweet potato... Bread was superb! For main I had the beetroot rissoto also great. My wife had the noodles with smoked tofu which she really enjoyed. We didn't have puds but saw vegan choice a bit limited. Staff were lovely and attentive throughout.

Treat Yourself - Edit
I typically opt for for casual meals when traveling, but I couldn't resist booking a table at David Bann and I'm so glad I did.
Read moreThe food was fantastic. I had the fennel broccoli walnut salad, which was delicious, fresh, and perfectly dressed. Then I moved onto the smoked tofu on a bed of Asian noodles, veggies and, adzuki beans. The tofu is house smoked and bears no resemblance to the packaged smoked tofu I've had, which is dense and mealy. This was perfectly crisp on the outside, pillowy inside, with a hint of smoke that kept step beautifully with the sesame tomato sauce.
Service was great. Atmosphere refined but not overly formal. Groups, couples and single diners like me were all comfortable. Cocktail list, nice by- the- glass wine selection, and local microbrews. Price fair.
Wonderful spot, can't wait for my next visit.
Pros: Delicious, creative food, Many vegan options, Nice atmosphere and staff

Lots of vegan options. Lovely staff. Great wine. Not as expensive as anticipated. Think I had expected more so a bit disappointing (maybe my fault, should lower my standards!) but still was a good experience.

Posh nosh! - Edit
It has been about 15 years since we last ate here and it is the same good quality. We were the most cheerful group in the place but then again it was a Monday evening! Enjoyed the food very much. They could make a few small differences to improve the experience for vegans, for example, bread came around with cow’s butter by default. Why not default to vegan spread? Most vegetarians would not notice and there are some lovely vegan spreads out these days. Or make a separate vegan menu so we don’t have to pay attention to all the menu codes. Tasty food.
