Go to rice and pickles - Edit
This place is 🔥. It’s a good idea (but not required) to make a reservation. Tell them you’re vegan when you order.

Priobiotic Heaven - Edit
Ordered: rice and pickles with goma dofu and 2016 pumpkin, tomato corn-silk kombucha, and warm amazake with ginger.
Read moreIf you want a gut friendly meal with amazing flavor variety and pairings, you must try the cultured pickle shop. They have nice out door tables that were perfect for our sunny morning meal. We arrived shortly after their 10 am opening time and so all of the tables were available, but they filled up very quickly. They are open only on the weekends and have a set menu which I believe changes daily but don’t quote me on it. The cultured pickle shop explained all of the different items in the bowl as they served them which made it more exciting and informative listening to everything involved in each fermented item and knowing that some dishes had been over half a decade in the making made it feel very special. I recommend looking back at the printed menu as you eat so you can remember which item is which because in the description by the sever it is a lot of info to take in all at once and it is a really nice experience. I wasn’t a big fan of the tomato fennel parsley dashi, I can’t figure out what flavor I wasn’t enjoying in it, possibly the tomato, but one of the other people who came with me really loved it and finished mine as well. With the pickle and rice bowl there were such a wide variety in flavors and textures that I don’t think I will be able to do it justice, but if you know my reviews you know that I love texture variety and thoroughly enjoy spicy and sour flavor combos which were found here😄The Cultured Pickle Shop is truly a delight to the tastebuds. The dessert bite was delicious and not what I was expecting when hearing macaroon, and the fresh sweet tartness of the strawberry with the sweet umeboshi macaroon went nicely together. We were all skeptical about the kombucha because tomato corn silk would not be what any of us would have chosen, but it was amazing! I would say go with their recommendations and pairings. While I enjoyed the warm amazake with ginger, the other two with me didn’t really like it or find it very exciting so you can probably skip it. Personally I felt it was a warm sweet note to end on and the ginger was nice and subtle. We left feeling comfortably full and like our bodies were thanking us for the meal. Look forward to come back with others in the future.
Pros: Wonderful experience, Great for the gut health, Vibrant flavor combinations
Cons: Only open for meals on the weekends

Vegan rice bowls with fermented veggies - Edit
This is a hidden gem in Berkeley. I stumbled upon it just walking around. They sell pickles (of course) sauerkraut, and various other fermented veggies. They offer rice bowls on the weekend. The bowls are at a default vegan, with the option to add an egg. You can also add avocado. I would have given 5 stars if they added a vegan protein option for the bowl such as tofu or tempeh.

Cons: no vegan protein option
