Veggie options - Edit
Good place to try veggie guo bao. Veggie options clearly marked but were in Chinese and didn't translate well. I tried the first option which had generous amounts of coriander but was also filled with sweet crunchy stuff which was too sweet for my liking.

I have had this Bao 2 times on my trip to hualien. I can recommend to bring one to your hiking trips! It’s still delicious the next day

Great 'Gua Bao' buns. - Edit
This small stall has a good selection of meat-free traditional 'gua bao' steamed Taiwanese sandwiches, also known as 'Taiwanese hamburgers'. The stall has a large sign stating 'vegetarian options available' and you can clearly see by the picture menu which are vegetarian (they have the white background and a green 素 character). Four options are vegan and and one has egg. You can ask to omit certain fillings before they prepare it for you. You must order to go only as there is nowhere to sit. No English is spoken. Definately recommended for a filling snack.
