Don’t bother - Edit
We drove for 40 mins just to get there as it was the only option nearby. We were the only guests and whilst the service was efficient and friendly, the food quality and price were terrible. The deep fried mushrooms were fine but the vegetable stir fry was a joke and the burger was worse than a McDonalds. Don’t trust the pictures as it’s changed so so much. The burger also came with a sauce that I was convinced was just mayonnaise. Honestly, don’t go out of your way!

Not the best 😬 - Edit
They no longer have a separate vegan menu. The options are 2 starters and 2 mains. Very underwhelmed by the quality. We had the battered mushroom with chilli dip, the burger and vegetarian stir fry. Not sure burger sauce was actually vegan even though they insisted it was! Chips were ok but didn’t get many of them! Meh. Wouldn’t recommend.

beautiful food - Edit
It's a really traditional styled pub. With a good selection on the vegan menu. The battered tofu with chilli lime and cashews is amazing!

Hidden Gem for vegans! - Edit
After visiting the Scottish borders donkey sanctuary I was very hopeful finding at least something remotely vegan on Happy Cow and we came across the Cross Keys Inn. I was a bit suspicious wondering if a country pub would really be catering to vegans apart from the staple chips and green salad option but when we got there we were extremely pleasantly surprised that the pub offers a full vegan menu. We were lucky to be able to pick of the vegan menu even though we were visiting on a sunday which usual has a traditional sunday lunch/dinner menu. The options were amazing ranging from starters such as garlic mushrooms to mains such as a vegan burger with all the trimmings or stuffed peppers (very popular item according to the staff) to dessert options such as the sticky toffee pudding (which was so good). The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, even making a special trip to go there if you are in the area! Its a really nice and cosy traditional pub that offers such a great vegan menu!

lots of choice for vegans - Edit
When we were here in June the vegan menu was just starting up, but we were very impressed. There is a seperate vegan menu which has five starters and five main courses, and several desserts (proper desserts like chocolate cake and sticky toffee pudding!). Everything we had was lovely. We met the chef and he is very keen on making the vegan menu as good as he can and wants to keep it going. It's so great to have more vegan options in the Borders!

Cons: Can get busy so best to book, also serves meat and fish
