Love the separate vegan menu and wait staff was knowledgeable about vegan. - Edit
Ate here with some carnivore friends so couldn’t share the vegan thali dish. I had the Daal Begun Gatta based on HC reviews. It was perfect.

Best of the Best on Brick Lane - Edit
On the 170m walk up Brick Lane from the Premier Hub, this critically acclaimed restaurant was the only curry house not to harass me to eat, convincing me that passing the other 22 curry houses was worth it. Was it?
Read moreThe window is adorned with reviews like a heavyweight boxer’s trophy room (See images) with the diners inside tucking in , but is it really The King of Brick Lane”?
They have a dedicated vegan menu (1st in Brick Lane) with a mix of traditional vegan specialties and plenty of plant-based meat substitute dishes too (see menu) with a Bangladeshi / Indian influence. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_1MkEhnA1KE&feature=youtu.be
A good measure of a older style trad restaurant is the Thali and it was up there with the best of the best. I’ve read why folk want it to be 5 stars and I couldn’t agree more on flavour alone.
Shahi Sahakari Thali £18.95 - Shahi Sahakari loosely translates as "The vegan king". A thali-style platter containing a mixture of uribeeshi biran, bombay aloo, begun daal gatta, chowle achar, chappati and rice…
The Bombay Aloo had a warming comforting flavour and the potatoes intact but fluffy and soft.
The Begun Daal Gatta was a stunning dish of lentils and aubergine (begun) garnished with a fine selection of herbs. This medium spiced curry really did wow me and I’d like it as a main.
The Uribeeshi Biran is the beans of a a runnerbean (uribeeshi) which have been fried (biran) with onions and a blend of spices. The beans have bite and work well with the rice although drier than I’d imagined.
The Chowle Achar was a surprise as it’s not listed on the Thali menu! The kabali chickpeas are pan cooked with mixed garlic, ginger, punch poron and blended with spread pickle, accompanied by a delicious thin sauce. They were cooked to perfection and with the chapati were second only to the daal as my favourite.
The rice and chapati were nice but I had to order an extra chapati so I could ensure every bowl was wiped clean and finished. Not a morsel left.
If I’m to be critical, it was expensive and I’d have preferred the Thali on a Thali plate with a little more rice and 2 chapatis, but I couldn’t fault the cooking.
Pros: Dedicated full vegan menu, Plant-based meat alternatives, Great flavours
Cons: Expensive, A little more on the plate would help

5 STARS REALLY - Edit
I am a vegan - and happycow does not let me give this five stars as it also sells meat. However, the food is amazing and they cater for vegans so well! They have their own menu, which is GORGEOUS and the staff are all trained for it. Had the vegan thali - what a delight. Highly recommend.

THIS RESTAURANT ACTUALLY CARES FOR VEGANS! Came in, they explained they had an award-winning vegan menu just for vegans, gave us special vegan chutney trays for the poppadums, and all waiters even in a time of staff shortage, were trained on what veganism and any allergies actually meant for food.

Amazing Place and Glad to Have Booked! - Edit
Bustling Heaving place just before the Truman Brewery. Booked after seeing all the good reviews online and seeing it on the tv. Fabulous place and well-deserving of their success. Manager was a polite gentlemen who talked about City Spice and the change in the local area to us. Food was exquisite - I had the dall begun gatta and sev puri starter. They also had an exclusive vegan menu which was a delight for my daughter!

Amazing food - far better than I thought - Edit
I think the other reviews are being a bit too harsh in all honesty, a indian curryhouse which has a separate vegan menu that has won awards! My dream! I think the food was very good, I had the thali so had the best of everything and I was very happy with it. Food was amazing and I felt full after! Another happy day of being a vegan!

City Spice - Edit
It was just OK. I was actually expecting a bit more spice in my vegan aloo gobi considering they have the word spice in the name of the restaurant, but here was not. The food was just super-average Indian food, which I felt let down by given this place is located in Brick Land. If you're in the area over the weekend, I'd suggest going to the Bricklane Backyard Market instead. You're guaranteed to find loads of vendors with delicious vegan options.

good but not very exciting - Edit
i’ve had the Chowle Achar which tasted good, was well seasoned but after a while a little... boring? there was no rice or bread that came with it and i didn’t intend on ordering any but did get a Chappati in the end.
Read morei honestly think it’s crazy to charge nearly 3 pounds for rice or bread. i know it’s London but there are places around that include rice in a 10 pound dish.

These guys have a separate vegan menu with dishes they have developed, I can highly recommend the aloo chat and stuffed pepper starters, and palani potatoes and bindi daal gatta main courses. My husband and I chose one each and shared....so glad we did as we got to taste two amazing dishes in their own right!

A whole vegan menu - Edit
It is a big deal when an Indian place offers you a whole vegan menu, when the others don't bother about vegans (and in case of indian cuisine it is not difficult but still it is an appreciable detail...). I ordered few items and they were very good and spicy, such as traditional ones. This place definitively deserves five stars instead of four.
