Beautiful visit to Chesil beach to discover a hidden gem

We had a lovely visit to Chesil beach and felt like we were on holiday for the day! Such stunning scenery to enjoy both there and during the drive too 🚗

The main reason for our visit was to discover Chesil Chippie, a fish and chip shop with a WHOLE vegan menu! With it being fish Fridays, we felt it was just meant to be ❌🐟

The team there are so lovely, very accommodating and we found out that they’ve had a vegan menu since 2016 which has been continually developed over the years. It’s been VERY popular too 🤩

We had the pleasure of trying their vegan fish, frickles (battered gherkins), king oyster crispy calamari, battered vegan sausage, tempura samphire and of course chippies to share 😋

The food was cooked to perfection and my personal favourites were the king oyster crispy calamari and the vegan fish. You’ve gotta give them a try if you haven’t already, or are skeptical about vegan fish like me 👌

We took a very short walk across the road and up the stoney hill to enjoy the food on the beach with stunning views of the ocean, beach and cliffs nearby 🌊

It’s good to know that all of their batters are vegan friendly and they also have a range of vegan friendly sauces including curry sauce, lemon mayo (perfect with frickles), vegan mayo and vegan tartare sauce which is usually difficult to find anywhere 🤤

It was a very memorable visit and we plan on visiting again soon. Thanks so much guys! 🙏

Pros: Full separate vegan menu , Staff were amazing , Stunning location

Terrible In Person Service - Best to use click and collect

On holiday in Weymouth, was really excited to try this place as it is so rare for chippies to have a vegan menu, however it was a very disappointing experience. Our plan was to buy some food and then walk along Chesil beach before catching the bus home, however it took so long for our food to be made that we didn't have the time for the beach walk. When we arrived, there was a queue going in to order and a queue of people waiting for what they had already paid for. We joined the queue in but when it was the turn of the people in front of us to go in, they were yelled at to get out. This meant the whole queue had to back up. They were not told why they had to wait outside when no one else had been told to wait. We then had to wait TWENTY-FIVE minutes to be served with no explanation. Eventually it turned out it was because a very large click and collect order had come in but we only learned that when these customers turned up and told us and apologised. None of the staff (and there were about 8 people working) told us why we were made to wait so long or received any apology. What I can't understand is why they couldn't take everyone's orders and tell us to come back in twenty minutes. Then we could have enjoyed the beach instead of being stuck in an increasingly agitated queue. Eventually we were served and again the service was rude. I guess the person on till just isn't very good at customer service. Kind of an issue since that is their entire job in that position. Food itself was okay, nothing particularly lovely. Perhaps this was a one off and they didn't know how to cope with such a big order, but in this case they coped badly by not informing their customers what was going on. Would recommend you only use click and collect, don't bother just dropping by, despite this being exactly how you'd use a chippie at the beach.

Pros: Separate Vegan Menu

Cons: Awful service, 25 minute wait

Not bad not good

The chips were nice, although served in a bag so stuck to it quite badly. I’ve had better battered sausages also which was sad, and was expecting them to be twice the size. Good options, with vegan ‘calamari’ & vegan ‘fish’. Nice to see some choice

Amazing

Tell me how I have lived in Portland for a year and had no idea this place did VEGAN fish and chips?! Spotted the sign outside last week and had to try everything. The banana blossom fish was amazing but my favourite thing was the king oyster calamari and curry sauce. Great service too.

Very good vegan options

We were too late to order for collection, so just just turned up for a walk in order. Service was very efficient and we didn’t have to wait very long.

We tried the vegan fish and chips and king oyster mushroom calamari, both were very good. The batter was light and crisp and chips were tasty.

Would highly recommend sitting on the beach and watch the sun go down as you eat.

Pros: Choice, Quality, Service

Cons: order click and collect early for same day

Chesil Chippie

Visiting Portland it would’ve been a shame to have missed out on having fysh and chips on the beach! We were able to preorder for collection, I’d recommend this as it is a very busy shop with queues out the door at times. I took away the banana blossom fysh, chips, tartare sauce, mushy peas and a battered sausage. The batter was nice, the banana blossom though hadn’t been prepared or cooked very well and as such was hard in places. I’ve had it elsewhere before where it was tender and flaky. The tartare sauce was delicious, I love to see this on the menu as not many places offer a vegan alternative. Daisy 🐶 loved her battered sausage treat. Good size portions.

Really good vegan friendly option if you're staying in Portland, Weymouth or nearby. Vegan fish and chips realllly good. Frickles were exceptional.
Swerve the samphire tempura unless your teeth are tiptop!

Pros: Really tasty, Friendly staff

Cons: Tempura samphire tough to chew 🤣

Fantastic! “Fish” and chips by the sea!

I’ve been vegan 5.5 years and have truly missed chips at the beach. To have banana blossom “fish” and chips at the seaside was brilliant!
Crispy batter, great curry sauce. Very efficient online ordering service. Easy to find with car parks very close.

Pros: Very efficient online ordering , Delicious crispy batter, Easy to find

Amazing

We visited last month when we stayed at Weymouth Vegan B&B and were really impressed with the quality and quantity!
We tried the king oyster calamari as well as the banana blossom fish with a side of fabulous tempura samphire.
We pre-ordered on the website and everything was ready at our collection time.

Amazing!

Having read the other glowing reviews on here, I knew I wanted to try this place. I wasn’t disappointed! I went for the pea bomb fritter and chips with some tartare sauce and was really impressed with it all. It wasn’t too greasy and the portion size was almost too much!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Separate menu, Vegan sauces available

Un-freaking-real!

The BEST chip shop, possibly in the world! So many vegan options, and all clearly marked on the menu. Battered mushrooms, battered vegan sausage, battered samphire (incredible!), banana blossom 'fish', king oyster mushroom 'calamari' and the most amazing pineapple fritters. Not a tinned pineapple ring - actual chunks of beautiful fresh pineapple battered and fried to perfection. Tartare sauce and curry sauce are vegan. Order online from the beach or as you're packing up your climbing gear, for hassle free collection. Flawless!!

Pros: Loads of vegan options.

Cons: Not in my home town! ;)

Really nice

Had the vegan 'fish' and chips with the tempura samphire and vegan tartar sauce.. all was cooked beautifully..
I've never tried the banana blossom deep fried, so was excited to try it.. as it sounded lovely on their menu ( they marinate it for 24 hours with seaweed, portland salt, lemon and thyme).. they obviously put a lot of effort into catering for vegans..but the texture of the banana blossom wasn't really for me.
I've also never tried tempura samphire..was a fantastic touch.
My son had pineapple fritter, which you could see was fresh pineapple not from a tin..
So all in all very enjoyable 😀

Pros: Loads of vegan options , Generous portions, Quality ingredients

Cons: Little bit pricey.. £5.60 for the vegan fish

Get the samphire and the tartare!

Didn't try the "fish" as I've had banana blossom elsewhere and didn't care for it. The battered mushrooms were nice but the samphire was my favourite, really interesting and nothing like I've had before. Also you wouldn't know the tartare is vegan.

Nice

Tried the vegan fish and chips. Chips were lovely and fish was a bit weird for my taste but 5* for effort. Would go again to try their many other options. Well catered for vegans.

I must admit I wasn't super keen on the banana blossom fish. The chips were excellent and I'll definitely try some of the other vegan options.
