If delicious had a name it would be Cafe Ren. We really loved the cosy little cafe and the staff. They were all so cute and friendly. The food was just amazing and the vegan desserts... Mhm.... You just have to try it!!

Cute place, nice food

We got the Soy cutlet bowl which was very tasty. Also got the curry dumpling and a vegetable dumpling. Dumplings took a while to come out but tasted pretty good.

Super adresse vegane $$

Great food, Nice staff

It's a super cute place with cozy vibes, the food was great and nit expensive. They had a kid's menu which is not that common in Japan. Nice and accommodating staff, we arrived after last order (they close early) but they didn't say anything. The desserts were amazing. Definitely worth making the detour for their food.

Cozy, delicious and welcoming 🌸♥️

Absolutely gorgeous vegan Japanese food at a fully vegan restaurant based in Kyoto. I ordered the soy meat rice bowl which was very similar to a Japanese dish of Katsu Don. My partner ordered the Gyoza Nabé (Hot Pot). For dessert we ordered the sweet potato and Cashews Cheese Cake which was presented so nicely. Would definitely recommend!!

Alternatively they also had vegan eel, spring rolls, and other dessert.

Warm atmosphere

Warm-hearted staff, delicious food and so many desserts to choose from! We had a hot pot, dumplings and the daily set. All very good, some of the vegetables were new to me. I recommend you try their homemade plum juice. Decided to try a tofu chocolate cake (gluten free) and a burdock root (never heard of that before) walnut chocolate cake. Both yummy. Very satisfying meal!

Amazing food!

It was such a nice place to eat! The restaurant is small and cozy, we felt really comfortable. The food was amazing, really tasty and perfect for the rainy day. We had the bento plate and one of the hot pots, for dessert we had a cake (no photo of the cake). Very delicious!

Cosy, warm and inviting

We visited the Cafe on a cold and rainy evening. I had the Shojin Medicinal Curry which was super tasty and just what I needed after all the cold!

The staff are super friendly and the space is inviting, despite being tucked away (all the goodies seem to be)

We also ordered the curry buns which were pretty good, but the curry was definitely the highlight for me

Lovely ambiance and food

We had a great dinner here our first night in Kyoto. Just be aware they close fairly early (like many places in Kyoto) - we were grateful to get a place as people were turned away after us.
The food was really nice - super cool work on the vegan eel - and the staff were lovely. Def recommend!

Good healthy food

We tried the dinner set, tofu eel, and katsu side. The food was good, but the texture of the tofu eel did get a bit monotonous halfway through. Overall a good stop and something a little unique.

I loved the service from the moment we walked in. They even provided blankets because we were by the door and it was cold outside.

Pros: Great service

Delicious food

Hole in the wall, all vegan restaurant with delicious food. We rushed to get here for last orders at 7pm and had to wait, luckily the staff were so friendly and allowed us to make an order for takeaway and in the meantime we got a table and ate in. Big portions and we ordered a few items to try. The dessert and matcha latte were delicious too!

Pros: All vegan, Mock meats, Friendly staff

Super friendly staff

Just 2 ladies working here. Got here one night just 30mins before closing and they still served us. We had the "bento box" set menu for around 1400 yen which tasted great. Really nice flavors! Tempura included in this set.
The place is small and it feels cozy. A little out of the way location-wise but definitely recommended!

Pros: Delicious bento box set menu, Super nice staff

Cons: Not so centrally located

Lovely meal and desserts, very varied and inexpensive

We had a truly great meal here. As usual we tried and order as many things as possible and luckily this cafe has a nice range of both savoury and sweet options.

Everything we had was so tasty, generous portions and inexpensive.

Only con is that we tried going back twice and it was closed despite the info saying it was within it's opening hours.

Highly recommend!

Pros: Incredibly good price, Food is amazing, Friendly staff

Cons: Opening hours can differ and change

An interesting change

Have you been long enough in Japan to be fed up with rice, miso soup and vegetables for every meal? And have you had enough of vegan burgers at the tourist restaurants? Then "Ren Cafe Nakagyo" is the place for you!

"Ren Cafe Nakagyo" specializes in Taiwanese food, but also offers Japanese food. Actually, when presented with the menu (in Japanese and English) everything looked so good that I had trouble deciding. Since I was in a Taiwanese restaurant I decided to go with one of the Taiwanese dishes: the medicinal soup with dumplings.

On a top shelf all the herbs are displayed that go into the soup. The result is a unique taste that doesn't resemble anything from a Japanese restaurant. Although the taste wasn't exquisite, it is highly interesting. Also, Ren Cafe puts a lot of different ingredients in the soup, so every bite is a bit of a surprise.

A tip: Ren Cafe is small. When I entered half of the seats were reserved, the big central table was occupied and they could only squeeze me into a little corner. During my dinner several people came in and had to be send away because there was no more seating available. So: do make reservations and you're in for an interesting change from the standard Japanese menu!

Pros: original taste, nice atmosphere

Cons: limited seating, reservations adviced
