Acceptable for Vegans - nothing more - Edit
Charleston doesn't offer a ton of variety for vegans, but I really don't think this is a great option. There is a large selection of vegetarian sandwiches, but modifications to make things vegan are pretty limited. Yes, you can get a chili cheese dog, but you have to get it on pita or sourdough, so it really loses the chili cheese dog feel.

A great dog-friendly cafe - Edit
Lovely to have a shaded outdoor garden that welcomes dogs. A relaxed cheap cafe with vegan options.

Tempeh wrap - Edit
This deli has a nice variety of vegetarian/vegan options in a hippie deli environment. I ordered the tempeh wrap which 2 of us thought was very good. My son had the Caribbean black bean burger.....good but spicy! We were glad to find a place with veggie options in a seafood town. I would definitely eat there again.

They don't seem to like dark skin people - Edit
I went around 2pm today. I took a while for someone to come and sit me which I thought was interesting but perhaps they were short staffed because it was Sunday afternoon. There was a party of two women before me. The hostess came and sat them. Then I waited for several minutes. A couple came in and within minutes the hostess came to sit them, at that point I complained because I was there first. There was no way I could have been be missed as I had my dog with me (also 5'8" and not small frame). The only thing different between the party before me and the one that came after me was that they were white. I am not, I am Hispanic and have dark skin. I stayed because I was tired, hungry, needed somewhere where I could seat with my dog, and had vegan food. However, given the choice again I would not eat there. The food was good but the service was not. If you are dark skinned you have been warned

pretty good - Edit
It was a pleasure to have so many vegan options on the menu. Hubby and I ordered the vegan chili cheese dog and the tofu veggie melt and shared. Both were pretty good, but they need more vegan sides. We were limited to a bag of potato chips and a small cup of Fruit.

So many options! - Edit
I love having so many options! I got the chili cheese dog and it was great. I also got the spinach salad. It had cheese but you could get it without. The rest of my family got the black bean burger. The burger was big and very tastie. I would recommend trying this place.

We tried the vegan chicken gyro, the vegan hot dog, and the vegan chicken sandwich. The food was very tasty, the service personable and vegan-friendly, and the place one-of-a-kind. We will absolutely go back!

Best Vegan Chili Dog in Charleston!! - Edit
Yes, it might be a small vegan menu but the chili dog makes it a mighty one!! And recent information suggests that Brown Dog is opening a second location at Smith & Bull. Yay!!

Ask server for help knowing what's vegan - Edit
The menu is pretty confusing, but fortunately the staff is knowledgeable and can help you understand what your vegan options are. There’s a section of the menu titled “vegetarian & vegan,” I don’t think much on it is actually vegan unless you specifically request they make modifications to make it vegan. The server explained everything to me, and although I kind of had a hard time following between all of the modifications and the things they were out of, you can get something tasty and it will be vegan. So everybody is happy at the end of the day!

Out of What I Wanted But Still Good - Edit
They were out of what I wanted (I don't even remember what that was right now) but they were still able to provide delicious food! Great location, cool atmosphere, and a good place for vegans/non-vegans alike.

Great vegan option! - Edit
Brown Dog Deli is great if you are vegan but are eating with people that are not! I had the Wackie Jackie Salad on a pita. I subbed the feta for vegan cheese. It was delicious!! The staff knows what is vegan and what is not so if you ask they will help you out. They have a section on their menu for vegetarian and vegan items but only certain buns and bread are vegan so make sure you ask.

HOT DIGGITY DOG! - Edit
Even though I don't live on the peninsula, my husband and I frequently plan our Downtown outings around BDD's hours. They have vegan dogs and chili that will knock your socks off. This restaurant has a wide array of vegan-friendly items (enough for 1/2 page of a menu!).

they had veg options - Edit
The good thing is that this place had vegan/vegetarian and gluten free options and it is in the middle of Broad Street - so if you're shopping/walking, great place to take a load off and grab a bite. I ordered a tempeh melt. But it wasn't very good - very dry and over priced for what it was just a small sandwich with no side of anything! Plus the service was really bad and we had to wait a long time for our food.

So-So - Edit
I do appreciate that this is a deli with vegan options located in the more expensive area of Charleston. However, when I was there I tried the Vegan Sloppy Joe and wasn't so impressed. It was a little flavorless. Atmosphere is okay. Outdoor seating is nice. It was just so-so for me, maybe I need to try something else based on some of the other reviews.

A great surprise. - Edit
Stumbled on here on a hot day in summer looking for food and shade! To our delight there were plenty of veg options on the menu. Only after we'd ordered did we discover the whole separate veg*n menu, which has even better offerings. It's no gourmet restaurant, but satisfying and family friendly - recommended if you need s quick bite while touring historic Charleston.

Ask for the vegetarian menu - Edit
Casual place with a separate veg*n menu. There are some vegan options, though many of the sides are made with mayo(wish just mayo had a larger share in restaurants). Pita pizza was veganizable and very tasty. Also had a good black bean wrap. Friendly staff who were familiar with what was vegan and what was not. Also can add tempeh or tofu to most thins on demand. Animal friendly outdoor seating.
