Bad

This place is super cute but unfortunately the coffee is terrible and the food choice are just okay. The prices are too high for what’s being sold and there are better vegan and veggie options near by. Definitely a pass!!

Nice coffee, bad sandwich

Only one vegan option for sandwiches; a dry roll with barely any filling, accompanied with an anaemia salad for £5.75

Coffee was lovely though!

Quite a unique cafe with a few vegan options

The cafe is also a book store, so it’s a must go if you love books. You can have a cup of coffee or have your lunch while choosing a book to buy back. A good place to hangout either with friends or by yourself. For vegan options, I wouldn’t say there’re many when I went and staff wasn’t very keen to help out. I had a soup and oatcakes, which was alright, nothing special for food.

Not good at all

I don't really understand why this place is so highly rated here: The options are pretty much untoasted sandwiches with few and not very exciting ingredients on cheap bread or some baked potato also with an uninspired choice of toppings.

The place is central though and if you just need a meal for 5-6 pounds quickly, it can be an option. The atmosphere is nice with all the books around.

Nice Vegan soup and sandwich options

Many moons ago I used to get my morning coffee from Books & Beans on my way to RGU's School of Engineering that used to be just around the corner. I always loved the place, its a quaint little place and I like the character of it. I wasn't vegan back then, but since going vegan I've been a few times when in Aberdeen city centre and I love the soups they do. I've also had one of the sandwiches they do which I also enjoyed. I think they actually do a soup and sandwich deal but I forget the exact details, although a soup and the sandwich together was a bit too much food for me.

Pros: Vegan soup is very good, Quaint little cafe setting, Friendly staff

Cons: Limited space downstairs, Only a few vegan options

Nice place

The cafe is nice, especially if you go upstairs to the bookstore. They have great coffee with vegan milk options, but their food and cake selection can improve. Worth a visit anyways tho!

Books and Sandwiches

Looking for something to eat rather early on a Sunday, Books and Beans offers the best opening times in Aberdeen.
Given their big range of food, the vegan options are somewhat poor. There was no vegan breakfast, yet, I could take a sandwich instead (the Tripple Decker Something). Not exceptional, but a generous serving and therefore filling. (No beans though.)
Soups supposed to be vegan most of the time as well.
Service was good, WiFi connections was good too.
Nicely furnished - additional seatings upstairs.
Seems to be pretty popular in Aberdeen; I've seen plenty of "mercandise".
Overall nice place, worthy of support. Would go again.

Pros: opens early on Sundays, friendly atmosphere

Cons: poor vegan range, plenty of meat

best soup in the city

Soups are always vegan unless otherwise stated, a few vegan sandwiches/salads, tray bakes and chocolate bars, fresh juice and smoothies. Has soy and oat milk available.

A lovely place to eat, with delicious food and secondhand books for sale.

Pros: best soup in Aberdeen!

Pretty average

Pretty average food, basically custom made veg/vegan sandwiches and bland soya milk. It had a meaty smell downstairs in the food section but upstairs there are tables and chairs surrounded by 2nd handbooks for sale. That is interesting and worth checking out.

Disappointing; not really vegan-friendly

I don't really understand why this place is listed on HappyCow. I came here last week while working in Aberdeen and when I asked them what they could make vegan on the menu, they were totally unenthusiastic and said that maybe they could modify a hummus sandwich to make it vegan. I ended up just having a black coffee and eating elsewhere. I see that the last reviews are from over a year ago; perhaps this place used to have better vegan options? Either way, based on my experience I don't feel that this cafe should continue to be listed as vegan-friendly on this website.

my go to

I LOVE books and beans. My favorite thing to order is the toasted wholemeal hummus, roasted red pepper, tomato and olive sandwich. Make sure you ask for no coldslaw. They also do lovely fresh orange and apple juice! Other vegan options include a nice couscous salad and many other options can be made vegan. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I love sitting upstairs at the window seat, optimum people watching spot! lovely.

Pros: great food & juice, in the center of town, good vibez

Cons: only good for lunch

Nice

Has soya so can serve vegan hot drinks. Sitting downstairs (don't recommend - a lot of awkward eye contact with passing by people outside) and upstairs, surrounded by books. Quite busy (a bit hipster feeling) but closes early. Not amazing vegan food options but mostly things can be tweaked a little, I had some yummy humus sandwich with dried tomatoes (and for some reason coleslaw as side salad after I asked for vegan options - gave it to my friend). Nice place to grab some food and a drink!

Pros: Soya milk, Nice food, Books!

Cons: Early closure, Small vegan selection
