Twice visited but never again

I've been here twice. First time I had the standard fish and chips but found that although the fish looked good it ended up being a bit stodgy. The second time round I went for the veg burger which was awful - an undercooked burger in crappy bread roll with some coleslaw. Both times the chips were very ordinary.
Probably the most annoying thing was the very loud teen muzak via Spotify which was a definite turn-off.
Please - get the chips right and turn down the music. It would be a start.

Cons: Stodgy food, Loud and lousy music, Very ordinary chips

Great to have fish and chips again!

I haven't eaten fish in over 5 years so I was incredibly excited about eating at this restaurant incase it was underwhelming. I went with 3 other meat eaters. I had the classic fish and chips dish which was stunning and everyone else agreed. My friends were shocked at how realistic my dish was (so was I!). The duck roll wasn't rated too highly by the meat eaters although I thought it was great and the two other people had seafood which they didn't rate too highly (I didn't try it as I wasn't a fan when I ate fish). I would 100% recommend that everyone try this eatery. I wish I lived in Sydney!

Pros: Amazing food, Super cheap, Great location

Cons: Not all dishes are perfected (yet)

quirky

We had a lovely old style fish and chip meal. The front of house service was good, but the delivery of food was a little slow and arrived in dribs and drabs and with little flair or announcement of which dish was being delivered. Food was good and it's a brilliant idea. I'll be back!

Overhyped

After many years, I was very excited to have fish and chips again. Unsure of what to pick, I went with the 3-fish + chips pack, which enabled me to taste three different types of fish. Full disclosure, when I used to eat fish, I ate it rarely and only liked very mild fish, anything with a strong fishy flavour was out.

One of the mock-fish tasted horribly fishy, the second was tolerable: still too fishy but with an ok texture, the third was mild and with a nice flavour, but the texture rubbery. The chips were a little below average too, not crisped enough.

Bliss is right

Went here tonight for the first time, brought a bunch of meat heads who all seemed pleasantly surprised that the food was edible. I had the home made fish fillety thing with chips (they also offer Gardein products but I like mine without the food miles).

The flavour of the fish is spot on. The consistency is a bit thick, it doesn't flake like fish does but fair enough, it's not fish. It is a bit chunky and a little bit chewy, which might put some people off but I like it.

The staff were super friendly, there were 6 of us and I was the only vegan so they even gave us a free serve of deep fried Asian roast style mock duck for the meatheads to try. It was very good, a light batter and served with hoisin sauce. My meathead friends all seemed happy with what they got, clean plates all around. My only criticism is the sauces which came with the main were in small plastic single use containers... I'd rather have it slopped on my plate if that is the only other option.

Pros: tasty fish and chips style food, Cheapish- I paid $16 for my meal, Staff friendly and helpful

Cons: Single use plastic with a sit in meal

Yummy meals

I return here all the time when I visit Newtown. Their duck roll is so scrumptious and the chicken bites are amazing!! Great place to chill with a bunch of mates and eat

Cons: Can be loud because of main road

Awesome concept

If I was being picky I would say Bliss and Chips don't serve the best chips you will ever taste, who cares....?! Its a vegan fish and chip shop with plant based prawns and calamari: its genius!

Pros: prawns

Cons: Chips

The Best Fish & Chips

I have been regularly eating here since its opening in Nov last year. Several times a week in fact. I'm pretty particular about what I eat, so I am amazed by some of the other reviews.

The Fishless fillet is delicious, with texture approximating real fish. 3 reasonable pieces.

The Bliss Fish was a bit like the standard veg fish you would get anywhere, but has been recently reworked and is my go to dish. It is quite a large piece.

The seafood basket is a good mix of prawns, calamari, fish pieces and a crab stick.

The home made tartare sauce is better than any I have had.

The deep-fried pizza is delicious and filling, and it retains its cheesiness.

The deep fried bars are understandably rich.

The deep-fried pineapple ring seemed odd when I first heard of it, but the crunchy batter and fresh pineapple burst inside works. It is a must have.

The deep-fried cookie dough is amazing and definitely the cheapest vegan dessert offering I can think of anywhere.

Clearly, some people have forgotten the prices at actual fish and chip shops, because this definitely comes in cheaper. There are also weekly specials.

My average spend is around $15, which is comparable to Suzy's, and definitely cheaper than Green Gourmet, or Golden Lotus, and Lord of the Fries.

I have introduced so many people, especially non vegan friends who have all been impressed and enjoyed it. I even took my mum here when she had a craving for seafood and she is not normally a fan of mock foods. She thoroughly enjoyed it.

The owner is also incredibly lovely and will tell you anything you want to know about the food. She is so passionate and constantly reworking menu items, striving to provide the best product.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Pros: Delicious , Different, Variety

Not my cup of tea

I really wanted to like this place. So much so that I came again after not having a great first experience, but I really didn't like the taste of the batter. The deep fried chocolate bar was pretty nice, but the price of everything was so expensive, and I just couldn't get into it.

Pros: Deep fried chocolate

Cons: Expensive , Don't like the taste

Great option - but couple of drawbacks

I was in town for three days with my mum. We went here the night before we left.

Being in the heart of Newtown, the place was buzzing with cars and people, even though it was a Wednesday night.

There were only 2-4 people there when we walked in, but it took quite a while before Bliss got to taking our order.

There were two women running the show: one that sounded like a local (Australian), the other Scottish (India - we overheard her name in discussion with a later customer). The Scottish connection explains the deep fried chocolate bars - something that seems to have originated in Scotland.

The local sounding woman took my order - she was friendly and helpful.

She tried to tempt me with the recent innovation of deep fried coke, and while that sounded fascinating, i wasn't in the mood to try it.

We got a large chips, a 'fish' basket and a pineapple fritter. There were plenty of chips and they tasted nice. The pineapple fritter was also nice, with a super crunchy batter - probably the crunchiest i've ever had.

The 'fish' basket was a loser, though. When i was ordering, i asked about the fish, and was told that the 'standard fish' is large pieces - like you'd get in a chip shop - and was flaky like real fish (peace be upon them). I mentioned small pieces, though, and the fish basket came up, so i thought i'd try it.

Turns out the 'fish' in the 'fish' basket is completely different to the regular 'fish' pieces you'd get. Apart from being in smaller pieces, the texture was more rubbery, similar to what passes for vegan 'calimari' (i can't recall ever trying the real thing, so don't know what it's like).

The batter was very good, crisp and crunchy, but the 'fish' was awful. My mother agreed. She liked the batter enough, though, to pull some of it off and eat it separately. While we ate all the other food, we left most of the 'fish' basket.

I have a feeling that the regular 'fish' would have been good, based on how it was described to me, but even so, i have trouble understanding what kind of fish the 'fish' basket was based on - gummy fish (is there such a thing)?

Overall, though, despite this downer, a good place to have around.

Pros: unique (at present), reasonably priced, chip shop food in vegan form

Cons: slow service, rubbery 'fish' basket

great burgers & old school fish shop feel

My favourite part of this place is feeling like I've been transported to my childhood, waiting for fish & chips to take home for a treat. My pick of the menu so far would be the burgers. Substantial, creative, quality & great flavour. Particularly enjoyed the fish burger with coleslaw. It's a bit pricey but worth it for special occasions (or perhaps a particularly rough hangover!)

Pros: unique atmosphere, does its thing really well

Cons: pricey

Great fried food

This place sells simple fried fish and chips that hit the spot and provide a great moc experience. They also have burgers which look good but I didn't get a chance to try. I would recommend for an unhealth kick if you are in Newtown.

Pros: moc fish

Good place for a fried food fix

I love their chips and the rest of the battered protein options are decent (classic fish and chip shop style fare). They also have various deep fried chocolate bars if you're feeling adventurous. Not cheap but all vegan and mostly gluten free.

Super awesome

I guess we were the only people who found this place to be really amazing.

I never liked fish when I ate meat, but I wanted to give this place a try. I found the fish & chips basket here to be really awesome, and we went back a 2nd time. It was quite busy both times we went, the lady behind the counter was very friendly, and there's a lot of variety on the menu.

I really don't understand the complaints about feeling weird eating deep-fried food, when the menu clearly advertises "deep-fried x" for 90% of its offerings.

The false advertising thing just made me laugh.

Seriously, if you're veg/vegan, go here. It's good. I wouldn't eat here every day, but it was fun on vacation.

Pros: All vegan, Friendly, Delicious

A few modifications and this could be great

Bliss n Chips takes the place of Burgerlicious, which had the best vegan burgers in Newtown... so, hard act to follow. The server recommended the chick*n burger, which was pretty ordinary: rock hard bits of soy chunk, and very bland bun. My husband had the seafood basket and chips, and he thought it was a bit tofu-y and not enough flavour. I thought the seafood aspect was what you'd expect. For me the clanger was the mayo, which they use in a lot of the sauces, including the tartare and the chilli lime mayo dressing. My guess is that it's the 99% fat-free Praise mayonnaise, which is a great find of the "accidentally vegan" variety in the supermarket ... but you expect better than that when you eat at a relatively pricey fast food joint. If the proprietors are reading this, please do yourselves a favour and invest in better vegan mayo, or make your own (as Suzy Spoons do). It's way too tangy and vinegary and, well, cheap tasting. I'll come back after a month of two to see if lessons have been learned

Pros: Fresh idea, Fantastic chips, Friendly service

Cons: Pricey, Tacky mayo, Small servings

Tasty and unusual

It's pretty uncommon to be able to find a Vegan fish and chip shop, but here it is. They have analogues for all the standard chip shop fare, and some of the more unusual things like a deep friend Jupiter bar (mars bar analogue)!

The food here is tasty, and they even have a 'bliss fish' option for those who don't want something as 'fishy' as their other options. The staff were friendly and happy to help.

Unfortunately, whilst tasty, it seems expensive for what you get. The decor and food are really close to the standard 'fish and chips' experience, but this may be to their detriment as when a 'fish', some chips and a drink comes to $20, it feels like you are paying a lot because traditionally fish and chips is budget fare.

In summary, it's really good for scratching the fish and chip shop itch, but may be priced out of the competitive Newtown market.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Good food

Cons: Expensive for portion size

Nice, if a bit pricey

A welcome addition to the Newtown vegan options.

We had fish and chips plus a Pluto pup (take away). I quite liked the food. Not excessively greasy, but they're not going to win any good nutrition competitions. Then again, that's not what they are selling.

We were served quite quickly but the food took a little while to be cooked - which is good as it was fresh, but a problem as we were rushing to a movie (so take that into account).

Pros: Good food, Great to have fish and chips as an option

Cons: Pricey for what you get, Meals a little slow to come

Ordinary

I found that all the food was very ordinary. The batter across all the items was hard and chewy. I potato cake was like cardboard.
With all due respect I can't say much positive about the place.
The gravy was not nice, bland an weird tasting. Chips were not bad. The 'Gardein' fish pieces were ok to.

Nearly everything is battered so the heavy chewy batter has shot the cafe in the foot alone.
Also I saw staff picking food up to measure in the kitchen gloveless.

I would give it a miss, or wait until they have been around for a while and perhaps adjusted their menu somewhat.

I have eaten here a few times and each time the food was amazing - the batter was crispy and golden - I can't understand your review - maybe you ate it takeaway or cold ? I will be a regular - I would recommend it to anyone - even my non vegan friends love it

Convincing lookalikes

I looked in here at a lunchtime in its week of opening, and it was so busy I couldn't get a seat. On reflection, I decided I didn't want to eat food that looks, smells and tastes like fish and seafood anyway, but the customers looked happy, and it's always good to welcome another vegan restaurant to Newtown. This local newspaper article gives some idea of what's on offer:

http://www.goodfood.com.au/good-food/food-news/just-open-bliss-and-chips--sydneys-first-vegan-fish-and-chip-shop-20151111-gkvglw.html

It's not fair for me to give it a rating as I didn't try it, but I had to pick something. People who miss fish and seafood will love it.
