Serves meat, vegan options available. Local and sustainable foods. Vegan choices include pancakes for breakfast, tofu scramble, sandwiches, tempeh dishes, and more. Reported closed November 2020.
This is a college-town mainstay with updated, roomy contemporary interiors. The menu has for certain four vegan-ready entree options made with tofu, tempeh, or portabello mushrooms. Other options can be Veganized. Service is good and efficient. WARNING: during peak times of the college season, long waits occur owing to faculty, visiting parents, students, and other locals. Expect a long wait.
I was shocked to find in the meat eating heartland of America, a restaurant that also offers vegan and gluten free options. Typically while traveling, I always have to settle for a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. To have other options, like a tofu scramble, and even temphe is amazing. The service was outstanding. The waitstaff specifically asked me if I wanted dry toast. Also the food was excellent. To me, it was worth every penny to enjoy a delicious vegan meal somewhere other than at home.
I really appreciate the effort Black River puts into trying out vegan dishes. Their tofu scram is a staple brunch pick for me and is usually delicious, served with a big helping of crispy home fries and toast with fresh raspberry jam. They seem to be adding vegan options to their list of specials more regularly, which is amazing!
However, the tofu scram ($9) is the only affordable veg option on the menu. The vegan specials are often $15 . Vegan food doesn’t have to be expensive to prepare. I would love to see more affordable plant-based meals at Black River.
