Disappointing

The host seemed appalled when I asked if the restaurant could accommodate a party of nine at 5:30pm on a Saturday. Then when our party split up and five of us remained, he dismissively said we could sit at the bar. Okay, that’s fine.

The waitress who took our order matter-of-factly denied that they several standard mixers before landing on something really basic. The food was flavorful but seemed a bit overpriced. But the ugliest surprise was when the check came out: with “no shame” (which is what Besharam means in Hindi), they charged sales tax after a 5% SF mandate and a mandatory 20% service fee. What the heck? This seems very shady. Never coming back.

vegetarian fine dining Indian cuisine with vegan options

I recently went to Besharam with my uncle. Besharam is 100 percent pure veg aka lacto-vegetarian fine dining Indian restaurant in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco.

We went here recently and was packed. Service was friendly. I spent more than three years in India over eight winters. My uncle recently returned last winter from his first sojourn to India.

The atmosphere and ambiance here was just fine. A nice restaurant.

He is vegetarian and I am vegan. The menu features cuisine from Gujarat and Mumbai aka Bombay. The menu is a bit challenging to navigate with too many options yet our waiter gave us some suggestions.

My uncle went with a paneer dish and naan. I went with Chloe aka garbanzo beans and roti made vegan sans ghee. We split the Ringan No Pro aka fire charred eggplant.

My uncle is a tough critic. He gave it two stars. He quipped I had better paneer at the airport in Bangalore than this paneer.

He got the halva for dessert to go and later said it wasn't that good.

I felt the food was costly aka expensive. I liked that it was pure veg aka vegetarian with clearly labeled vegan options. I was happy to see the restaurant was packed as makes me very happy to see a vegetarian or vegan restaurant packed with so many folks enjoying vegetarian or vegan cuisine.

Our server was friendly. I felt my food was tasty. It was a light fare.

They did have a $75 dollar tasting menu featuring a little bit of everything on the menu yet my uncle felt like if he loved what he ordered he would be keen to come back to try it. Our waiter said that they can customize the tasting menu to be vegan.

I concur with my uncle. The bill for what we ordered was nearly as much as if we both got the tasting menu.

This is our feelings on our recent experience here.

Pros: vegetarian fine dining Indian cuisine , vegan options, friendly service

Cons: expensive

Wow fantastic flavors!

Great selection if vegan items here, many are also gluten free! Lots of nearby parking. Great for small or large parties but gallery arra can be very noisy.

RINGAN NO ORO a great sweet tasting eggplant dish.

SAMBHAR was a tie for the best dish we had. So many great flavors. A curry dish, not a soup.

TREVTI DAL was also extremely delicious, very flavorful.

PUDA charcoal grilled corn pancake, was a fantastic appetizer. Many different flavors.

RAJMA was a friends suggestion, wasn’t impressed with this dish

Last was the ANKOOR'S GUNPOWDER, a dry hot powder which was good initially but then had a rancid taste. I think they need to make a nee batch.

See menu photo, didn’t get to try all the vegan items. They can do the roti vegan without ghee.

Pros: Great taste, Many vegan options, Many gluten free options

Cons: Seating in gallery was very loud.

Vegan is limited - won’t go back

They put cheese in black sheep meat balls and impossible meat so having anything vegan in proximity to authentic food is without plant based meat. Why? No idea. It’s easy enough. Also was told “we’re reservation only” with an attitude. Off my list.

Pros: Not much

Cons: No good vegan option with PB meat, Attitude, cold, Tough spot in town

I wouldn’t go back as a vegan for lots of reasons but they are vegetarian at least.

Just went and there were many vegan options. I wouldn’t suggest the Black sheep product, tried it as a vegan food fest and made me gag. Nasty. Perhaps too close a taste to lamb:mutton?

New favorite Vegan/Veg restaurant in the Bay Area!

I almost didn’t want to post a review so I can keep this perfect little hidden gem to myself. But having been to every vegan restaurant in the Bay, I can assure you that this is a can’t-miss. They got everything right with planning and execution: location, venue experience, interior layout, service, a truly unique F&B menu, and perfect execution of all items. I am certain go back often to try their newest seasonal offerings. #Veganuary

Pros: Inside an art gallery; clean, spacious, &engaging, Unique menu with all vegan or veg options, Five-star experience for a great price

Cons: No vegan desserts!?, No vegan desserts!? 😉, Must place order for everything all at once

10/10

We had a whole bunch of small plates for the sake of variety. The Impossible samosa was the only letdown—pretty much just tasted like Impossible—but everything else was a stone cold winner.

Fabulous cousine

This place features food from a state in India that you usually don't see in the United States. My boss who was from the region was delighted with the authenticity.

Pros: Tons of vegan options, Unique dishes, Menu marked clearly (vegan, gluten-free)

Cons: Not everything is vegan

Fancy, Pricy, and Totally Worth It

Got the tasting menu, which is easily veganizable, and the dishes just kept coming! Varied flavors and textures, beautiful presentation, and extremely reasonable by SF standards~$65). Great date/special occasion spot!

Pros: Great cocktails, Great service

Cons: Expensive (by vegan standards)
