Gutes Temple Food - Edit

Baru Vegan Temple Food Restaurant Experience - Edit
Fully vegan menu; after a couple of days in not-so-vegan-friendly (but beautiful) Gyeongju, this was food for the soul.

Beautiful people, beautiful food - Edit
This was one of the best meals I’ve eaten so far in Korea. What’s more, the two women who were preparing and serving the food were incredibly warm, welcoming, and kind. It was a beautiful meal prepared by beautiful people. We took the tasting menu, which was pricey by Korean standards but still fairly reasonable when converted to my local currency. There was a lot of food but it was served slowly in phases; the entire meal took about 2 hours start to finish. I left feeling full (which is good because I was starving when we got there; Gyeongju is not super vegan friendly so I’ve been skipping a lot of meals), but not weighed down or like I had over-eaten. Lots of tasty little bites and time to linger over the flavors. Truly a top-notch experience and worth the cab or bus ride from the tourist center!

Authentic Korean Delight: A 5-Star Culinary Journey! - Edit
I had an amazing experience at this Korean restaurant! The home-style cooking was delicious and authentic. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend trying their dishes, especially the bibimbap and kimchi stew. Overall, a fantastic dining experience worth 5 stars!

Terrible racist experience - Edit
So I'd give one star if I could, but happy cow doesn't allow me. We came all the way here by taxi, in the middle of nowhere, raining as f***. Arrive, just before us there's a group of 20 Asian people. We sit first, get tea and everything normal and we see that some people from the group cannot be seated together but there's plenty of tables on another room. The waitress tells us we should go because they cannot serve us. Ridiculous

Wholesome - Edit
Kind owners, they are aware of veganism. Food is very healthy and still filling. Asked us if we wanted refills after we finished everything. Got some strawberrys for dessert.

Great experience! - Edit
We ordered the set menu and mung bean pancakes. The set menu was such a cool experience with lots of small dishes to try. The ladies working here are so kind and tried their best to explain all the dishes to us using translation apps. We loved it!

Truly Recommend this place! I loved it! - Edit
It took us 6 min with taxi to get to the restaurant and thought on first hand it was closed, don't be fooled tho, the door is open! We walked in, and a very sweet lady greeted and seated us. We ordered a 3 meal course and there was so much! Many small dishes to taste from and very unique experience. It felt all really authentic, and it is something you should take your time for. We were there for more than a hour. The lady came to make small talk with my friend who speaks korean and she was very sweet and interested. In the end we payed and got some tangerines to go 😭🥹💞 protect this lady at all cost 😭 wanted to make more pictures but the food was too good!

Incredible temple food - Edit
Wonderfully flavorful food served temple style. Probably the best temple food we’ve found in Korea so far! Staff was so sweet and friendly. Got so excited to eat the courses when they came out that I forgot to take photos of some of the courses! We left feeling very satisfied and didn’t even mind the walk back into town.

Disappointing experience - Edit
Serve all food at once and not little by little. Dont tell patrons youre too tired to serve them. This actually happened.
Read moreDisappointing experience. Horribly managed restaurant. All patrons were told to wait. While we were seated and waiting for food a couple came in and asked to be seated. They were told they would need to wait to which they said "we were here 30 minutes ago and left because you said we would need to wait. Now we've come back and still need to wait?" They left, clearly annoyed, without eating. I am currently writing this review in the restaurant because we too are waiting. The default greeting of this restaurant is "you will need to wait 30min-1hr" yikes. As for the food. As I write this we have been here for 1 hour and had 2 very small salads and a very small 탕수 버섯 (sweet and sour mushroom). We ordered the set. These dishes arrived about 10 minutes apart. Food is served as follows: very small salad for (3 people), wait 10minutes, tiny serving of black rice soup, wait 10 minutes, get another little but different tasting salad. Yep, wait 10 minutes for sweet and sour mushroom (his wasnt sweet, so glad we didnt order the full portion). Waiting for the rest of the food to arrive (feels like it never will) to continue review...
Finally got some bibimbap. It was average. As much as Id like vegan restaurants in Korea to succeed, Ill never come back. Food was average at best and absolutely not worth the terrible waiting.
Pros: Fully vegan restaurant
Cons: Bad value for money, Food was nothing special, Infinity wait times.

All vegan, healthy, delicious food - Edit
I went to this restaurant with my non-vegan Korean friend. We both really liked the food and thought that it tasted very healthy but still had a lot of flavours. After reading a comment here I was unsure if it was 100% vegan but my friend asked in detail about the ingredients and they confirmed that it was all vegan. We had the Bibimbap menu, and got countless side dishes, two kinds of rice soup, a mushroom soup with chilli, salad, sweet tea and fruits

No working hours - Edit
I went to the restaurant by car. As expected it was closed. This otherwise would be ok, but the point is that there was no any timetable on the shop. Apparently the shop works quite irregularily. This is completly not fair to the customers. Most user of happy cow are foreigners who went half the world to this place to find it not working and to gamble wether it is oppen or not. It is not easy to reach by public transport too. It may be owners have some troubles, in that case they have my simpaties but is it fair to custommers to run like that? Honestly speaking, this restaurant should be removed from happy cow until it put working hours and observe them. It should rely to local customers only.

A variety of taste and structure you've never had before. Over 20 dishes. Soup, salad. And do taste the red wine. Its wonderful. Get the 330 or 60 bus it's worth it. 2 min walk from the stop. And not even 25 usd per person. Recommend!

Many flavors, delicious - Edit
The set meal consisted of a variety of small dishes that arrived gradually, followed by bibimbap at the end. The small dishes were interesting and flavorful and the bibimbap was one of the best I have had in Korea. The staff were kind. It is worth making a trip to try Baru!

Baru - Edit
The food was very varied, artful and delicious, but be warned, they serve jellyfish tendrils with one of the fried jeon dishes. My Korean husband had no doubts about what it was. NOT VEGAN.

Loved it - Edit
We called in advance and reserved the course meal. You can order it when you're there as well, I believe. This was a special birthday dinner and it lived up to the experience. It is in the middle of nowhere but the building looks cool in the distance. Inside is a lot of plywood so its definitely not the ritz but we were okay with that. The seating is shoes off floor style. The ladies were super nice to us and proudly announced that their restaurant is fully vegan. They were curious about our vegetarianism and were pretty talkative about stuff. The food was just exquisite for the price. It was one of the best Korean meals let alone veg, I've ever had. Sadly I got a little full before the final course of vegetables and rice came out and I couldn't really enjoy it. I definitely recommend coming here on a completely empty stomach. The only part that was a true con for me was the location as getting the bus back to the main town area after dinner involves waiting for a while at a near abandoned bus stop in the pitch black night. Definitely make sure the flashlight on your phone is working if you'll be there into the evening. I can't go without recommending a stop here if you're ever in Gyeongju.

Great experience - Edit
We had the two set menus (first item on the menu), 18,000 won each. It’s a bibimbap with lots of starters and side dishes made with local produce (almonds, strawberry, etc). We really enjoyed trying new flavours, some of them we loved and some others were interesting. The staff were lovely and brought a dish for my 11 months old baby. They were very sweet. It’s a 50 min walk from the center but there are many buses if you’d rather not walk. I will add some pics.

it was the best food in Korea - Edit
We had 2 set menus (first option at the menu) at it was absolutely amazing, I thought at least twice that it was the end, and then even more food were coming. Wonderful experience. We went then second time for mushrooms and something with potatoes in name, and that was no so good, but still nice. Anyway first option in the menu although 18 thousand won per person is really worth it.

Great place but foods are quite greasy - Edit
I really liked the place. Interior is lovely and the owner was nice and welcoming. I enjoyed the 7 course menu but the foods were too greasy for my taste. I think 3 or 4 of the courses were deep fried which I don't really like, but it was an interesting experience and the place has good atmosphere.

I visited for lunch on a weekday. it looked closed and the parking lot was empty. However it turned out to be open and serving. I had a Korean pancake and a fried mushroom soup. Both were good and reasonably priced. the menu has limited but interesting options.
