Took a bit of effort, finally got our vegan dishes - Edit
Before coming to Kuching, I was reading all the reviews on HappyCow to find vegan-friendly places to eat near me.
Read moreI was super excited to see a listing on Bahe' Restaurant at Rossyln’s Gallery Cafe, where one reviewer said you could have vegan versions of Tempoyak Petai, Kerabu Midin, Bunga Kantan Fried Rice, Tepus with Kantan and Chilli, Terung Asam Soup, Dabai Fried Rice, Tapioca Leaves Fried Rice, Kasam Ensabi.
And this was a listing on 11 February 2024 so it was pretty recent.
But when I went there, there was only 1 vegetarian option on the menu which was a vegetarian rice bowl.
And then when I requested for vegan-friendly options, the lady said there weren't the ones that I mentioned.
So I showed her the photos from the HappyCow app, and she said I might be looking at Lepau.
I said No coz this is the exact same address of the cafe and I read out the address to her: 45, Jalan Main Bazaar, Kuching
She kept saying we could have the vegetarian rice bowl set but I don’t like sets as the portions of the food are very small.
In the end we managed to persuade her to offer us the ala carte single dish servings.
I think it really depends on who you get taking your orders… later the lady boss came up to check on us so maybe communication would have been much easier.
We had:
1. Kerabu Midin RM16.90
2. Terung Asam RM16.90
3. Plain Cassava Fried Rice RM4.00
4. Daun Ubi Tepus (size S) RM15.90
5. Nuba Laya RM4.00
6. Tempoyak Petai
The portion for the daun ubi tepus was very small, seemed a bit overpriced for RM15.90.
I’m glad that after that the dishes were bigger.
We enjoyed the food but the prices seemed to be on the high side. Maybe it’s because it’s on the Jalan Main Bazaar so it’s priced for tourists.
I would go back again if it’s easier to communicate with the staff on what we wanted to eat.
Note on Google Map, the name of the place is: Roselyn's Gallery Cafe by Restoran Bahek
Pros: Local Sarawakian dishes, Interesting deco
Cons: Difficulty in requesting for vegan food, High price for small portions, Only 1 vegetarian option officially listed on menu

Vegan-friendly Sarawakian Food - Edit
Finding a vegan-friendly restaurant that offers Dayak food is such a gem 💯 The trick is to order vegetarian no egg 😉 They’ve been extremely accommodating!
Read moreYou’ll find dishes here that they don’t serve anything else — things like kasam ensabi or my personal favourite, tepus with bunga kantan 😋
The fried rice offerings here are amazing by the way and the portions are extremely generous! Come hungry and in a group so you can order to share 🤗
They’re not normally crowded but I hope they stick around 🤞This has easily become one of my favourite restaurants to go to when I’m back in Kuching 🐈
Cons: Service can be slow when crowded
