Staff were not friendly, food was fairly ordinary and service was really slow. We asked them to cook our egg more and they couldn’t because it wasn’t the recipe. Muesli bowl was tasteless mush.

Quite rude staff that just seemed annoyed when we wanted to order. We sat down to wait for our food and no one called it out when it was ready. Had to go ask after a long while and turned out they’d just stick the bowls in the fridge instead of calling for us…

Read moreJust be careful, most reviews mention honey but there IS dairy milk/yogurt in at least one bowl. So if you're vegan, make sure to double-check the ingredient list. (My point is, the "vegetarian" tag isn't ONLY because of the honey, so you still do have to check the ingredients.)
Also, they put the blender parts in water in between orders, but there is always something left on the one they use to crush the ingredients. So there might be a bit of dairy that ends up mixed in your vegan bowl, if they put it in the blender (I'm not sure they do). This is just through what I observed, I don't know if they have different blenders for different things or what ingredients they mix in these, but I thought I should point it out on here just in case it's really important to you.

Saw this on happycow and stopped by to give it a try. It's in a nice little space a couple of blocks from the hustle & bustle of downtown Santa Monica. The menu offers a good selection, though many things contain honey so you have to ask them to leave that out if you are vegan. I got a macro bowl (brown rice based) and an acai bowl with banana slice on top. Both tasted fine. However I think the kimchi in the macro bowl made my stomach feel a bit un-easy. Next time I'll try a different bowl.

Even better than the place in Santa Barbara (bigger than in SB)😄Very helpful staff and more options in the menu (savoury bowls and toast available). Big servings, good quality food, easy to veganise the vegetarian options. I can't praise Backyard Bowls enough😄After going to LA from Santa Barbara I was delighted to see that my favourite SB spot is available here too :)
