The best vegan lunch in Ishigaki! - Edit
This place is fantastic, and 100% worth a visit. Staff are friendly and take obvious care preparing the food (you can watch them cook from the counter seats). The atmosphere is great, with lots of interesting books and records etc inside. They also took great care in terms of cleanliness, asking us to sanitise our hands and checking our temperatures on the way in.
Read moreThere are plenty of vegan options, I had the 5 bean soy milk curry and it was really great - so delicious and filling. I got it with fried vegetables, which were crispy and salty and perfect (you can get steamed vegetables if you want something healthier!!)
If you’re travelling with non vegans they have options here too - my partner was very happy to get the traditional Okinawa soba (not vegan!). Great lunches for everyone!
Pros: Options for meat eating companions, Good COVID safety measures , Great atmosphere
Cons: May not be open when expected - call ahead

Limited options but great ones at that! - Edit
We had the curry set with steamed and fried vegetables. The curry itself is delicious and flavourful. The vegetables were divine and local! The fried spinach type green was great as was the steamed pumpkin. Really recommend, it’s a lovely place! There’s also some extra things in the main menu that could be vegetarian too but I didn’t ask. The staff speak English well too.

Minimal but delicious options - Edit
This restaurant has basically two main vegan options: tomato pasta or soy bean curry plus some sides and really yummy salads. We tried everything and it was all so delicious. Highly recommend. Staff are super nice, we speak Japanese so it was no problem for us however I can judge by other guests that the staff didn’t speak English super well but they seem to understand vegan so don’t worry!

Eclectic lil place - Edit
Although the vegan options are limited, we had a delicious dinner with an appetizer, a different salad each & the curry with fried veggies. The presentation of the food & the atmosphere of the place are amazing. The couple running this place are equally great. Definitely a great choice in Ishigaki.

Great ambiance, food and drinks - Edit
Amurita no Niwa is a super lovely restaurant/cafe in Ishigaki. They have delicious vegan options, very interesting drinks selection (I loved their enzyme juice with soy milk and their chai syrup 3) and indie ambiance with a large selection of art books, vinyls and other interesting stuff. But most importantly, people who run the place are amazing, fun and sweet. If you are ever in Ishigaki, it's a must-go! 3

Japanese curry - Edit
They made the curry to order so I had to wait for quite a while. I had curry with vegetable and mock meat. The mock meat was so real that I didn't eat it and had to reconfirm with the staff. The rice is very nice. Well generally Japanese rice is really tasty. The staff here are friendly although they hardly speak English. The place is cozy here.

Excellent place for island with few veggie options - Edit
Dinner service begins at 6:30pm and I was a few minutes early so I walked around until they were ready. Veggie visitors to the Okinawan Islands may find very few options, especially in Ishigaki, despite the abundance of restaurants. Those familiar with Japanese cuisine know that the language barrier doesn't help as fish stock is in almost everything and "vegetarian" means pescetarian in Japan. Amurita No Niwa was a blessing! The staff are super friendly and have a vegetarian menu in English that is vegan-friendly as well. I can't evaluate communication in English and I speak Japanese and had a very lively conversation with both owners. The 5 bean curry with fried vegetables was excellent. They make the spice level to your desire, mild, medium, or hot. They grow some of the greens and allowed me to taste some raw Okinawan greens that I have never eaten. I was really worried about traveling to the other islands and am so glad I saw the review in Happy Cow and ate here. I highly recommend this place! We discussed some trends in American veganism and I explained about other options they may be able to offer so I expect Amurita No Niwa will become even more welcoming to veggie minded folks. This restaurant is located on a smaller street parallel to the main 79 (Yui Road), not far from FamilyMart on the corner as a point of reference, but before you reach the covered shopping drag.

very tasty, friendly staff. - Edit
very nice little restaurant in the middle of downtown Ishigaki. They serve meat but have a special menu for vegetarians/vegans. I had a nice Mizuna salad with silk tofu and delicious curry with fried vegetables. The staff ist very friendly and will help you out if you have any questions. If you tell them that you are vegetarian they will ask whether or not you also eat eggs and cheese.
