Lovely staff, great foods and limited waste!

Whenever I can get to alligator I will do! They’ve got my favourite smoked tofu, loads of organic tinned goods, nuts, fresh fruit and veg, flour, vegan bouillon, vegan cheese, vegan milks, chocolate, herbal teas, vegan friendly bio cleaning products and cosmetics, fresh bread and gorgeous samosas and onion bhajis made fresh every day. The staff are lovely and very helpful.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Lovely staff, Low waste

Lovely place

Very nice little shop. They stock lots of vegan and vegetarian foods, including vegan cheeses and non-dairy milk (some of which can be hard to find elsewhere) as well as lots of health foods like nuts, cereals, healthy or vegan snacks, etc. Apparently they also stock some of the recent Quorn Vegan range! Has a very nice, homely atmosphere and the staff are all very friendly too. It can be a little pricey though, but I suppose as a small business this is a necessity for them.

Pros: Good range, Friendly staff, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Can be a little pricey

Lovely local shop; can order stuff from catalog

I've been buying my vegan specialties from this shop for years. It was the first place in York to stock Violife cheese and they're happy to order you any special requests from their supplier's catalog - examples include VPud vegan black pudding, Wheaty slices, uncommon flavours of Violife etc etc.

The staff are very friendly and on a quieter day, you may be in for a lovely chat. It's also a great place to randomly meet other interesting customers!

These days you can find vegan items in larger shops as well, so I go less often, but still do for things like oat cream, refills of bio-cleaning products, vegan chocolate.

Sadly, the cakes they sell aren't vegan and the product range is a bit small, so with many items you have to wait until they get them ordered in. And yes, the waiting time can be long :P

Good to have somewhere to buy bits

This is the only place in York I have found that you can buy Tempeh and other bits and pieces that a vegan might want. So for that reason its great, it is a bit pricey but I think most independent organic wholefood shops will be. They do have a minimum spend on cards which I think might have been £10 (possibly £5) but it caught me out last time and also of the couple times I have been there the wait to be served has been insanely long, not due to being busy just an inefficient cashing up practise.

Pros: I can buy Tempeh here, Food bins - less packaging required

Cons: long waiting time

Found by Chance

Found this place by chance whilst trying to be clever in finding a short cut to Blake Head vegetarian cafe & book shop. Finding this place made up for it though. Well run local friendly wholefoods place that sells a great range of meat free goods, fruit and veg, frozen foods and breads. It's got a nice independent feel to the place. Long may that continue.

Pros: local, well stocked, cosy

Cons: bit pricey
