Call it a 3.6 - Edit
Great to have an all vegan restaurant as they aren’t as common as I’d like them to be, but….
Read moreThe restaurant is surprisingly large for starters, seating outside, seating inside downstairs and there is a decent amount of seating upstairs as well, you would certainly need to book at times as it wouldn’t be hard to be flat out busy. We found it very noisy and that seems consistent from other reviews, people talking loudly at the next table and the music didn’t help as people were then trying to talking over the top of that. The music changed at one point and we thought we had a reprieve but they kicked it up a notch.
Food wise, the menu has some well thought out and creative options to choose from, good plan to go with a few people so you can try a few things or go a few times to work through them. Menu is broken up into small medium and large plates.
We were a group of four and had Shitake Mushroom Balls, Mini Vietnamese Pancakes, Kale and Saltbush Gyoza, Grilled Kimchi, San Choy Bow, Crispy Tofu with green papaya and Sesame Crusted Eggplant. The Pancakes and Gyoza weren’t GF FYI. This was just enough food for our part, so if you have a couple of strapping eaters, small plates are small.
Shitake mushroom balls were deep fried and bit overdone to me, erring toward charred and very greasy, the wasabi mayo they were sat on was nice. Mini pancakes were ok, nothing stunning, I expected a cucumber hoisin type presentation but they were a bit lack lustre. The Gyoza were interesting, got a good hint saltbush hit in one, pastry seemed a bit underdone even being fried. Grilled kimchi was good and we were very curious, it was nice, a bit sweet but well presented. The san choy bow was small and underwhelming, mainly lettuce with a hint or something.crispy tofu was underwhelming the tofu coating had no seasoning so was pretty bland, papaya salad was ok. Crusted eggplant was interesting, bit greasy but each small eggplant was full crusted in sesame seeds so was something different.
It was hot when we went but was ok, glad to get outside but it was a hot day. Funky area, good for a wander, pub across the road if you want drinks before or after. Parking can be a real challenge if you drive, light rail runs past the end of the street but not sure where the nearest stop is.

Amazing for a special occasion. - Edit
The vibe in here is so special and it was great for our occasion meal. We sat outside in the back and it was quiet enough but still has a great vibe. We tried the dumplings which were amazing! The zucchini flowers were also really yummy. I didn’t love the adobo cauliflower. They have a tasting menu which I would be excited to try. They were easily able to cater for my nut free partner.

Disappointing dining experience - Edit
The restaurant is a very noisy place with too many tables crammed in a small space. Food is lacking in flavour and overpriced for what you are getting.

The best - Edit
We had the gyoza and the money bags to start. Then the cauliflower and mushrooms. Then chocolate lava and date puddings. We also had several cocktails. All was amazing. Best vegan meal I have had in Sydney.

Every bite delicious and surprising - Edit
We arrived at 5 today, so the restaurant wasn't at all crowded. Service was quick and friendly. The menu was so intriguing that we had trouble deciding what to choose. Once we did, our taste buds and we were elated. Everything was fresh, creative, and beautifully presented. We ordered two appetizers and one large plate (the barbecue mushrooms -- superb!), and everything was "wow!" delicious. We topped it off with the extraordinary chocolate lava cake which was warm, wonderful, and covered with berries and flowers. We loved Yulli's so much that we immediately made another reservation for day after tomorrow so we can treat ourselves to more of the menu.

Great vegan dining - Edit
Highest recommendation for any vegan visiting Sydney.
Read moreSydney has a lot of vegan restaurants, but most of them are basically fast food. Not only is Yulli's food excellent, but it's one of the only vegan restaurants in the city that veers more toward traditional dining. Highly recommend any vegan visiting the city give this place a try.

Vegan deliciousness - Edit
Our favourite plates were Zucchini flowers - magically filled with a beetroot based sauce that oozed out like savoury jam from a donut as you cut into the battered Zucchini. And Wasabi Cauliflower that had a beautifully balanced kick to it. We sat in the main (Standard) part of the restaurant at fairly low tables and in a lot of background noise, which was a bit too loud for us, so we probably would have been better outside on the pavement. There’s also bar seats opposite the bar - stools you can swivel on whilst eating of a low shelf. Plus at the back there’s further seating. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Food is amazing - if you’re in Sydney go !

Trendy veggie wine bar in funky neighbourhood - Edit
EDIT: Almost 12 years later I went back to check this place out. Delighted it's still there, still awesome and now completely vegan!
Read moreHaving heard a lot about this place I shepherded my vegan husband and 5 friends (ranging from the vegetarian to the carnivorous) to Yulli's on the night of my 30th birthday. It's in a very boho neighbourhood and makes a lovely walk from the centre of Sydney along Crown street lined with bars and boutiques. Yulli's was not a disappointment - it had a trendy wine bar vibe with a good varied menu and a separate menu for vegans, as well as a good choice of vegan wine & beer. Food was varied and unusual (my husband & his omnivore friend both said the bitter melon pancakes topped with thai curry were the best meal they'd ever had) and service was friendly and efficient. Downsides were that it was very cramped - they seemed to have gone for quantity of covers over comfort of diners, although I guess you can't blame a small business for that, pretty pricey and again didn't stay open as late as you'd expect on a Thursday in a 24-hr city! But still comes very highly recommended and well worth a visit - it's an unusual experience and very nice to be in a trendy wine bar that's all veggie :-)

Banquet menu had lots of variety - Edit
Decent set menu at $44, lots of variety in the menu although not huge portions. Favourites included the dumplings and crispy broccoli. Not a big inside space so needs booking. Staffing wasn’t great - they tried to take food away when we were not finished, and were not attentive with eg. refilling water.

Great! - Edit
The Korean fried broccoli is amazing! Pricey considering the portion size, but reasonable enough. If going with a group, I would recommend sharing. Gets very noisy and packed, especially around dinner time. Staff are very attentive and friendly IF you've got a reservation (from my experience).

Avoid the banquet menu. Just order what you want - Edit
I’ve been to Yulli’s 3 times and so I feel like I can give a fair review. Although, as someone who grew up eating Asian food and working in hospitality, I will admit I have high standards and this review of an Asian fusion place will reflect that.
Read moreThe first time I went with a few couples and shared with my partner, second time I had the banquet menu, third time recently, we shared a bunch of things as a table. I would recommend the latter.
Avoid the banquet menu as you really don’t get much and so you cant enjoy the food as much. The thing about asian fusion, is that you can’t expect it to taste how you normally would have it so Yulli’s take on certain foods can be a hit or miss, depending on what you like. Perhaps that is why I think the sticky date was there it best, as it tasted as close to how it should. Overall it was interesting but I don’t think they have the balance right in each dish and so nothing blew me away.
Staff also aren’t very attentive to refills of water which to me is a basic requirement for a review of a restaurant.

Meh - Edit
Yulli's serves Australian-Asian fusion in a very casual setting. Seating arrangements were uncomfortable and very tightly squeezed together. Dishes were oily and sweet. I would generally describe the food as “pub food”. Fittingly, they also seem to brew their own beers. We tried their mandarin IPA which was good, far better than any of the dishes we ordered.

Creative, authentic, but some dishes need rework - Edit
Firstly, the staff member who received us seemed like she didn't want to work anymore, even though the place was empty except for maybe for customers. After bringing us the menu as an afterthought, another less moody staff member took our order. The san choy bow brings a subtle sweet aftertaste amongst the initial intense rush of spices, and the zucchini flowers have this lusciously smooth cheesy filling with a beetroot bang that definitely pairs well, even for beet haters like me. The leek dumplings tasted more like scallions, and the wasabi cauliflower seemed like two separate dishes that someone forgot to mix, still tasted OK. The cauliflower papardele seemed to need some more cheese flavor, but also tasted OK. In general, I think they deserve extra stars for dating a bit and for working out some great combinations, but some dishes still need some adjustments.

Dessert is the best part! - Edit
Warning: the cauliflower papardelle is spicy (at least for people with low tolerance), other than that good.
Read moreThe kale and saltbush gyoza were delicious, especially the sauce. The server took our plate away quickly without saying anything/looking at us though when we finished the gyoza but we wanted the sauce.
Dessert was the best part. We got chocolate soufflé and sticky date pudding, both delicious! Some of the best dessert I’ve had since going vegan.
