Once you go vegan sushi you never go back

A while ago we went to the Vegan Sushi Bar at the Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam. We loved everything about it, from the atmosphere to the food itself. So when we found out that they have two restaurants in Amsterdam, we had an excellent excuse to visit once more.

This time we tried the restaurant at the Wittenburgergracht. It’s a brisk 25 minute walk from Amsterdam central station. This so-called “down town” location is a lot smaller than the “west side” restaurant. It has only 2 tables, some seats at the bar and the window (to be on the safe side, do make a reservation). The space has been decorated in good taste with a mural painting, Japanese bonsai trees and a big sign on the wall that says “Happy fish” (in Japanese). The average Happy Cow fan will feel right at home!

During our first visit, we ordered what the chef recommended (“flambé salmon” and “shrimp-less tempura”). These were spectacularly good. This time the chef wasn’t as chatty and the kitchen was slow in preparing all orders.

This meant we had to navigate the menu by ourselves. First we tried the “green genovesa” which is fairly bland but saved by the pesto on top. The “no chicken teriyaki” is tasty, but we couldn’t find anything that resembled chicken. The “sweet avocado tree” is good and even better with some soy sauce and wasabi. The only disappointment was the “tropical spicy mango”. The name suggests an interesting mix of sweet and spicy that would cause a sensation like sweet and sour sauce does. Instead it’s just a sweet sushi with a slice of pepper on the top.

During our second visit, we found out that not everything on the menu is spectacularly good. However, everything is tasty, original, beautifully presented and most important: better than the original. So no matter which branch you visit: once you go Vegan Sushi Bar you never go to back regular sushi!

Pros: Fantastic food , Nice atmosphere , Beautiful presentation

Cons: Slow service (your mileage may vary), Limited seating

Sushi heaven

Small place in the east part of the city centre. Seats around 15 people inside. There's also a terrace outside (not heated). Not cheap but worth every penny! Prepared with care by a Japanese chef, the Sushi is very delicious and original. Large variety of choices.

Sushi Paradise

This small restaurant is run by two delightful young ladies which provide a very friendly service.
My food was freshly made in their open kitchen and it was to die for. I also had a very good quality tea. Everything is very cared for and beautiful and the food is amazing.
Although fully vegan this is an authentic sushi bar!

Pros: Super good food, Beautify served, Very friendly

Cons: Cold indoors

Amazing vegan sushi!

This was the highlight of our trip! The sushi was the best I ever had. Even my boyfriend who doesn‘t like sushi enjoyed the place. He had the gyoza, edamame and sweet potato tempura and they all were delicious as well! I had the tuna roll and the „tuna“ was just lioe real fish! The waiter (owner?) was super friendly and explaind everything in detail! Would love to come back one day!

Wauw 😍

A little smal but very nice staff and very nice decor. The food blew us away. Every thing we had was so good. That we had a little to much... Not to mention the elegant presentions. The sushi itself was a little on pricier side but well worth it. (The water on the other hand was cheap for restaurant prices.) If I lived closer by, it would be a regular spot.

Pros: Everything is vegan!, Nice and friendly staff., Nice outdoor seating.

Cons: They were out of Mochi. = (

Bit bland if I'm honest

I'm not much of a sushi man; in fact I was sort of blown away by the other reviews saying it was the best vegan sushi they'd had because it implies some plethora of vegan sushi. Anyway I had 8 salmon rolls (€13) and a side of seaweed (€4), and my overall judgement was that the rolls were a bit bland without the ginger on them and they were a bit too soft to pick them up with chopsticks. I had a bit of wasabi and it blew my head off, and I forgot to add soy sauce (so take this review with a pinch of salt). The seaweed was indeed tasty though. I might go again though to try some other bits.

Pros: Friendly staff, Easy enough to find

Cons: Bit dear (but it's in near-central Amsterdam so)

Pros: Nice variety of choices.

Cons: Can get pricey, if you're hungry!

Amazing food

Food was amazing and the server couldn't do enough for us after seating us when they were very full and doing everything herself. Sometimes feel a little unwelcome in Amsterdam as tourists but she was brilliant and the food was sooo good. Never had such hot wasabi it nearly blew off our heads but we kept going back for more... would love to return! Could have eaten it all twice, easily!

Aanrader

Desondanks dat wij een luid krijsende baby mee hadden bleef het personeel vriendelijk en aardig. Het eten was lekker, wel wat prijzig.

Best place we ate in Amsterdam

Myself and my girlfriend walked past the sushi bar and instantly wanted to go inside. First time we went was a bit late but they went out of their way to make sure we had a proper meal. Second time we was given sashimi on the house and had an amazing meal. Customer service was excellent, some staff seemed new but so friendly and patient. Can’t recommend it enough, if you’re in Amsterdam, do visit.

Pros: Big tasty servings , Excellent staff , Fantastic location

If you're tired of boring sushi

They opened this 2nd location on July 11th. I had the sushi with fried sweet potato and avocado, one with fried vegan shrimp, and gyoza. I liked all of them. The sweetness of the sweet potato goes really well in their sushi. Only after a while, the taste sensation got a bit boring.

The sushi with shrimp was my favorite of the two; the crunch and savory taste of the fried shrimp with the panko topping gave a great lasting mouthfeel. They serve the sushi with wasabi and pickled ginger. I also love that they (partly?) use a darker type of rice.

The gyoza was also good. I think it was made with a base of potato. What they don't mention on the menu, is that the gyoza is served with a spicy sauce as topping. I like spicy, but I can imagine this is an unpleasant surprise if you can't handle spicy food well.

I would have loved to try out their mochi and dessert of the day (cheesecake), but unfortunately, they were both made with cashews, which I can't have.

Pros: great variety of vegan sushi

Cons: On the pricier side, around €14 per sushi roll
