Great fresh and flavorful dishes - Edit
We got an order for takeout here and enjoyed everything. We had egg rolls, banh mi, chow mein, spicy noodle, and orange chicken. The spicy noodle was a little too spicy for me, but my husband loved it. Would love to try more items here!

We were very happy with all the dishes we had. The flavors and presentation were top notch. The prices were fair and service was friendly and accommodating. This is the place to go for converting people who feel that they must eat animals with every meal.

Good Vegan Vietnamese Food - Edit
Van Hanh serves up some yummy vegan Vietnamese food. We ordered the spring rolls (standard, but good), banh mi with vegan ham (this was really good, and it made me realize how much I missed a good banh mi!), and Buddha bowl (WOW, the bean curd was so crispy and flavorful!!)
Read moreOnly gripe was that the sauce for the Buddha bowl was a bit bland, but the large quantity of bean curd that came with the meal made up for it.
Van Hanh has a large menu, so I’m looking forward to going back and trying more of their offerings!
Pros: Large portions, Large menu
Cons: A little bland

Reliable choice - Edit
I've been coming here off and on for years. Of course there has been changes, but overall the food is consistent and reliable. The menu hasn't changed too much which I actually appreciate, but they do label gluten free options now. I always feel good eating this food.

VHVV - Edit
Cute little place. Person helping me was nkce and my order was made very fast. Veggies in the steamed bun were hard like when you microwave something too long. The chow mein was really good, except the broccoli was hard, practically raw. Would have been nice to have it soft like everything else. The banh mi had something about it that tasted a bit off. I would definitely go back and try the chow mein again and something new, but probably skip the steamed bun and banh mi.

Right on, thanks for the review and all the pictures, really helpful. It's been pre-covid since i was there, the menu change dropped our staples. I recall having to order the right thing, sounds like a similar experience.

Getting better! - Edit
Visited to place a takeaway order recently and was very impressed with the speed of service and the quality of the food. Ordered dumplings, bahn mi, papaya salad, and a taro smoothie. Looking forward to giving Van Hanh another try in the coming months.
Read morePrevious review from 2022: Ordered delivery through Uber Eats. Including Pho, Papaya Salad, Egg Rolls. Papaya Salad was fresh tasting, crisp, and balanced. Pho arrived warm bordering on lukewarm, and the veggies were consequently overcooked in the broth. Egg Rolls were greasy and lacked flavor. The container for the Egg Rolls was left wide open, and the plastic bag the food came in was not completely closed. A few of the condiment packets were bloated and should not have been packed with the food (Bloating is a clear indication that bacteria are present inside the packet. Bacteria feed on the contents of the pouch and produce gas.).

100% Vegan Restaurant! - Edit
Van Hanh is unique in that it's currently the only vegan Vietnamese restaurant in Portland. They've operated for years, & offer a diverse menu of mostly mock-meat-heavy dishes that are average in terms of price as well as flavor. I do appreciate their mission & occasionally order but there are far better Asian restaurants that are either vegan or vegan-friendly in Portland.

Its definitely good! - Edit
I came back to this place after such a long time, came here once before the pandemic came around. I wanted to come back sooner, the food is yummy. What I got this time was a Bahn mi w/ veggie ham, spring rolls, orange chicken (it was my favorite) and a Thai iced tea. Not pictured Vietnamese coffee. Nice staff run by Buddhist nuns, small and charming and the service was good. Food came fast and did not have to wait that long. The prices are fair for the type of food they serve and the service they provide it was all good. P.S. ask for the house made hot sauce it made everything spicy and added a extra layer of yum 🤤

My first bad review 😞 - Edit
After reading the very complimentary reviews we were very excited to try this restaurant. The parking lot was large and easy to get into. The tables and chairs were a bit rough but clean which counts a lot.
Read moreThe food though, I am sad to say this was the worst food I have had in a very long time. We ordered four different dishes, something should have been good. The highlight of the meal was the white rice. It had some sort of delicious sauce splashed on it.
The basil in the salad rolls was very fresh and delicious but the peanut sauce was thin and bland. The lemongrass tofu was odd. No sauce just a ground lemongrass mixture that was mealy and not good. My husband got the rice noodle bowl, the “salad” was chopped iceberg, that was it. The buns were a gooey mess we could hardly eat filled with a ground mixture that had an unpleasant texture.
I gave two stars because the lady was really nice and the rice was good.
Pros: Location, Nice staff, White rice
Cons: All of the rest of the food., Shabby furnishings

Cheap and Yummy 😊 - Edit
This is a go-to spot for me! I looooOoOooOoOove Vietnamese food and I’m a slut for Thai Tea. This time I got bao, Pad Thai, and Thai Tea 😋 all great! The Pad Thai came with really wide cut noodles and they’re my favorite! I love when a bunch of noodles stack up while cooking and it’s super chewy 🤤 the bao was a little more simple and bland, but in my opinion it was homemade which earns it brownie points! Besides, throw some Soy Sauce and Sriracha on it and it’s good af! The portions are big too!

A new favorite - Edit
We asked the staff for their recommendations for our first time in, and they recommended the spicy noodle soup and pork belly. They were both super flavorful, and we had a very nice chat with the man who took our order. Will definitely be looking for more excuses to drive down to SE Portland to come back!

Not so sure about this place - Edit
We have tried to eat here several times and although the food was very good and satisfying, the staff made us feel unwelcomed, like we were interfering in their life or something; it was so weird. During one occasion, a few "customers" came in while we were eating and they looked at us like we were not welcomed in their eating hole or meeting hole or whatever was going on and kept staring over at us. It made us uncomfortable. I just smiled at them and kept eating. That was a few years ago (before the plandemic) and although the food was really good, we were hesitant to ever go back.

Haven’t been to Van Hanh in over 3 years and I’m not really sure why. And now I’m mad I haven’t cuz we went yesterday and it was just as good as I remember. We had the Buddha Bowl, Curry and a Banh Mi. All of it was so good. The Buddha Bowl was filling but light and refreshing. The curry was flavorful, smelled awesome too! The ban mi was great too.

Just moved into the neighborhood so I thought I'd give this restaurant a try. I love being able to order anything off the menu! Ordered the Hue Spicy Soup. It just might be my new addiction. So tasty with just the right level of spice. Looking forward to my next visit!

My Fav PDX restaurant 🤤 - Edit
Editing my previous review to say. Wow. I love this place! Everything I've had so far is super authentic & delicious. It's like I'm eating home cooked vietnamese food but vegan & I should know as half my family is vietnamese. The Buddha Bowl is my favorite. I've been like 6 times now & it's my fav PDX restaurant. 😻💕

Always a great option, the pho is a staple in our house anytime someone is sick. Pro tip: if you order through their website and use the code "local" you'll save 10%. The restaurant experience isn't ideal, so I'd recommend getting it to go.

Delicious - Edit
My family and I stopped by for lunch, and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered pho, curry soup, spicy soup, a pork dish, spring rolls, and fish cakes. The soups were perfect for a rainy day, loaded with meat substitutes and fresh veggies. The pork dish was crispy, and my boyfriend said he would drive to Portland (we are from Seattle) just to have it again. The overall vibe was comforting, the person working was friendly, and the interior was a warm place to eat. Highly recommend giving this place a try! #Veganuary

I stop here as often as possible. I've liked everything I've had - the buddha bowl with tofu, the papaya salad, tofu banh mi, steam bun, and almond cookies. Plus I got to have a thai tea for the first time since going dairyless 15+ years ago, which was an extra special treat.

Bland Broccoli Beef - Edit
I ordered Spring Rolls and Broccoli Beef. The Spring Rolls include lettuce, jicama, carrot, and a side of peanut sauce. I tasted cilantro (which I dislike), but it's not included in the ingredients on the website. I didn't like the flavor of the peanut sauce. The Broccoli Beef had little sauce or flavor. It includes white rice, with no option for brown. The entire meal was overpriced and underwhelming.
