Healthy vegan options!

Locally sourced, fresh food with an menu that changes by the season. I always enjoy eating here when in the area.

Pros: Multiple vegan dishes, Tofu is an add-on protein option , Servers are knowledgeable about how to veganize.

Vegan Options Decreasing

I’ve loved going to True Food Kitchen in the past, but it does seem as though they have fewer vegan options with each new menu. We made a reservation for brunch and there was a special “Easter Menu” with no vegan options at all. We raised with this with the server, half expecting some creative thinking and suggestions but he didn’t offer any. We ended up finishing our drinks and leaving. There are a few options I know are good for lunch and dinner, but this wasn’t what I wanted on Saturday morning. Even those options seem fewer - there were bowls and other items, but nothing at all in the “entrees” section at a place that used to be very vegan-friendly.

Nice evening out - BEST Choc-Chip Cookies!

We went here for my birthday.
Told the waitron we're vegan and were encouraged to try the pizza and the burger. So we had both. The pizza was ok, a bit bland. The burger was much more tasty.
Got the vegan choc-chip cookies for dessert and this was the highlight of the meal. I'd go back there for just that! The cookies are served warm and are delicious and chewy, served with vegan icecream.

Pros: Some vegan options, Best Choc-Chip Cookies

Cons: Not many vegan options.

Always a pleasure.

I love that the menu changes with the seasons. There are always multiple vegan options that are clearly marked. Even vegan desserts, which can be hard to come by. True Food locations are a staple for vegans in the DMV area, in my opinion. I do think, however, they could expand their vegan selection.

Love the Food!

Been vegan for over two years now (about 80-90% whole food vegan) and just found this place. I LOVED the dishes my husband and I tried. We got the teriyaki quinoa bowl (added tofu) and the flavor was excellent, not to mention the vegetables were so fresh and cooked perfectly! I’ve never been to a restaurant that cooked their veggies so perfectly (cooked JUST enough to still be crisp but not raw). We also got the vegan double cheese burger, and I love that the patty’s are made with whole foods rather than meat substitutes. The flavor was unique and delicious. We also got the edamame guacamole (guac is always a good choice) and shared a summer mango tart for dessert., which was refreshing and not at all too sweet. They have several vegan options as well as several vegetarian options, some of which could probably be altered to be vegan, and I can’t wait to try more items.

The whipped vegan ricotta

Seriously, anything with the vegan ricotta is amazing. Butternut squash pizza. Vegan lasagna! So so good. Customizing dishes is easy, staff is friendly, and desserts are delicious!

Great vegan options

One of our favorite non-vegan eateries. True Food offers a wide variety of vegan options. In addition to the vegan cheeseburger with sweet potato hash (delicious!), we recommend the Korean noodle bowl and the butternut squash-topped pizzas.

Wait staff is consistently friendly and attentive. Lovely covered patio for those who prefer to dine outside these days.

Pros: Many vegan menu options, Friendly and attentive staff, Generous portions

Lots of great options with a custom vegan patti

The double vegan cheeseburger sounds like a lot, but they have a custom delicious patty that isn't dense. The apps are also always wonderful

Excellent vegan options

Many many plant-based options. We like the burger, the tempeh sandwich, the many bowls, and the pizza. The kale guacamole dip is a great appetizer - with a side of veggies.

Pros: Many vegan options.

Lots of vegan options!

And all delicious!!!!! Teriyaki quinoa bowl and Butternut squash pizza are my two go-tos. Charred cauliflower appetizer. All delicious and “healthy” but I would consider this a ‘cheat’ for some of what feels to be processed. Excellent option for a mixed crowd.

Wonderful vegan options

The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and airy. I had the Butternut Squash Pizza, which was AMAZING. I cleared the plate. My friend also had the Ancient Grain Bowl with Tofu - also very good. I can't wait to come back and try the Kale Guacamole and another main entrée.

SO GOOD

The food here is so good and they do take out if you do not want to stay there. They have a good variety of vegan options and non-vegan options for those friends who aren't vegan. They also have good vegan starters and desserts which is always super nice. My non-vegan friend got vegan food and loved it and I had a pizza and loved it and we shared a super delicious dessert. I'd give it five stars.
Also the servers were super friendly which was nice.

Pros: takeout, deliscious, vegan and non-vegan friendly

A Great Place to Eat - but sit outside

On our first visit to True Food Kitchen, my husband and I were blown away when the hostess greeted us promptly with menus (of course) and also (here’s the surprise) a laminated copy of Dr. Andrew Weil’s Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid. And although we haven't been given the educational handout on recent visits, the pyramid is prominently displayed as artwork on one of the walls. I'm not sure that the pyramid gets as much attention on the wall, so I wish the restaurant would still provide the handout. After all, the connection to Dr. Weil's food-as-medicine philosophy is what really sets the restaurant apart.

Our server was quick to inform us that the restaurant takes great pride in offering scratch-made dishes that are prepared with locally-obtained, seasonal ingredients. The menu contained plenty of choices for vegetarians, with roughly half of the items being meat free. No guessing needed; items were clearly marked as being vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten free.

Many dishes on the menu featured interesting items which are gaining attention as healthy alternatives to less nutritious foods. Some of the more unusual ingredients that we noted were fennel, daikon radish, sea buckthorn, chia seed, anasazi bean, flax seed, spaghetti squash, mulberries, kale, and farro.

My favorite dish is the TLT sandwich. I love the tempeh "bacon" and appreciate the fact that the bread is whole grain. The side dish of sweet potato hash provides some nice color to the plate.

I'm happy to report that our server provided good service and, when asked, could describe how the food was prepared. Many other positive aspects that we noted included the open kitchen, recycled content furniture, live plants on the tables, and outstanding patron education.

We normally prefer to visit True Food when the weather is relatively warm and we can sit outside, because the indoor seating tends to be unusually noisy when the restaurant is full (as it always seems to be). Be sure to make a reservation, and then ask for an outdoor table when you arrive.

Pros: Several vegan options, clearly marked on the menu, Pleasant outdoor seating during warm weather, Aligned with food-as-medicine philosophy

Cons: Noisy indoor seating

Love!!!

I come here often and typically order their vegan bowls or pizza--and their food is EVERYTHING. It's a great place to go with vegan and non-vegan friends, as there is something on the menu for everyone. Beware crowds at peak mealtimes: Saturday noon and after 5 p.m., and Sunday brunch.

Pros: Delicious vegan bowls and pizza, Organic and homemade juice drinks

Cons: little expensive

Great food but pricey

For a non vegan / vegetarian place, True Food Kitchen offers a good selection of vegan options or vegetarian options that could be made vegan. I ordered the Teriyaki Quinoa Bowl with Tofu. It was very flavorful and fresh. I do wish it were not as expensive. The Quinoa Bowl w tofu ended up being $17... For a relatively small bowl.

So I think for special occasions, I would come back. But otherwise, I'll look to recreate some of their dishes at home.

Pros: food was fresh and yummy

Cons: pricey

Delicious and Healthy Vegan Dishes

It was great that True Food Kitchen included vegan options as part of their Easter Brunch (and regular menu). Vegan Chorizo Burrito was delicious. Roasted Artichoke Pizza was not as good as the Butternut Pizza mentioned in another review. Deserts (coconut and chia seed flan & key lime pie) were delicious and highly recommended.

Pros: Spacious seating, friendly and knowledgeable staff

Perfect for Vegans, GF-ers, and everyone!

Some very old friends who are not vegan - one of whom eats gluten- and dairy-free - chose True Food Kitchen to take vegan me for a special holiday meal. It was a great choice!

I had the Butternut Squash Pizza made with smoked onion, organic kale, vegan almond ricotta, and dried cranberry - delicious! For beverage, I chose the Apple Carrot Ginger Tonic.

My hosts and I shared the Shiitake Lettuce Cups with tofu, jicama, sambal, thai basil, and cashew as a starter, and the squash pie for dessert. Both of these were both vegan and gluten-free - perfect!

Atmosphere and service were as good as the food.

Pros: fresh, delicious food , many options for both vegan and gluten free eaters, great atmosphere and service
