Delicious veggies, disappointing zero meat burger - Edit
I dropped in on a Sunday for a late lunch after visiting the nearby National Museum of Modern Art had left me very hungry. The walking distance is very short and the overall price of 1.150 ¥ (set menu plus an additional salad) was very affordable considering the central location.
Read moreI longed for a menu in which veggies played the main role and was not disappointed. The cabbage and turnips in soy milk, the bean sprouts and green veggies, and the additional salad were delicious with their differing seasonings. The purple rice was great after all the white rice I had elsewhere in Japan.
On the day of my visit, the zero meat burger was the only vegan option for the A category of the menu, so I went for it although I am not a big fan of mock meat. This one was particularly disappointing. The burger was more like a small dumpling and very "doughy"/raw, as if it had not been cooked/fried properly. It was surrounded by a very slimy sauce that made it hard to use chopsticks on the mushrooms swimming in it. Unfortunately, I didn't like it at all and left the restaurant somewhat dissatisfied.
The miso soup of the day was not vegan and the staff did not offer to prepare a vegan alternative, so I missed out on that part of the menu.
Unlike other reviewers, I am not to sure whether the chef and/or staff fully grasp the meaning of "plant-based" in its common English-language usage as synonymous to "vegan". The menu board outside the entrance also labelled a fish course as plant-based, see my photograph. And no, this was not some plant-based mock fish but real fish. When ordering, I took care to mention that I was vegan, but I still felt a bit insecure after having seen that menu. I decided to stay, though, because I was too hungry to walk to another place.
Pros: Affordable, Central location, Friendly staff
Cons: Irritating mistake on menu

No more vegan menu - Edit
They seem to not have any more vegan items on their newest menu. I dropped by today and unfortunately couldn’t get a single dish…

Healthy vegan protein lunch! - Edit
Only one option for vegans, but the staff will help you order the right thing. You can choose the type of rice and dressing, but only one “main” for vegans which is the super delicious soy meat hamburg steak (not hamburger).

Healthy Plant based options. - Edit
Healthy, delicious & inexpensive. Unfortunately the miso soup is no longer vegan ( and they can’t do an alternative). But they still have a lot of plant based ( free of animal ingredient) options. There is a new system where you are supposed to order using the Line App, but if you can’t /don’t want to do that they will still take a physical order. It’s a short walk from the East garden of the Royal Palace & the National Museum of modern art .

Macro-friendly vegan!! - Edit
Ahhhh, I never thought I could find these two concepts merged in the same place in Japan! I had a field day here after complaining about nutritionally weak vegan options for years 💛
Read moreOrdering using the handwritten sheets is a bit of a hassle, but it also makes sense so that you can fully customize everything (type and amount of rice, main dishes, extras and sauces), and the staff is super friendly and helpful if it's your first time or you can't decide.
Low-salt and vegan options are clearly marked on the main menu display, as well as the carb count. I wish it was a bit more detailed, but it helped me settle for the vegan curry -- I thought it would be carb-heavy, but it only had like 8,5g per portion. Everything seems to be consciously prepared in a healthy way 💛💛
The set meals start from 1,000¥, which is pretty decent even for standard washoku. I'll go to their Marunouchi branch asap to try the Zero Meat combos next time!
Pros: Surprising amount of veggie options, Healthy, high in protein, Detailed nutritional info
Cons: Some options are a bit expensive, I'm silly and got natto by mistake

Lots of vegetables, just what I needed! - Edit
I was feeling a bit carbohydrated out so turned to Happy Cow to help me find somewhere I could get my five a day. Run Cube (as it is now called) was fast and friendly, and not only gave me an English menu but also explained to me how the ordering system worked (essentially you put the numbers in the boxes). It’s ¥1000 for a set meal: rice, soup, and 3 dishes. There are lots of varied veg choices - my favourite was the Moroccan salad.

Limited options but healthy - Edit
Typical Japanese dishes with some being vegan or vegetarian. No main protein dish, unfortunately but it’s a lot of sides and relatively good volume for the 1000¥ set.

Hearty healthy food. English explanation of how to order is provided, plus staff speak enough English to point out what is vegan in the ‘protein’ food options. Drinks menu is all in Japanese so take your chances - we ordered cola.

Great find - Edit
I stumbled upon this place while in Tokyo. Food options there are limited. The place looks nice - wood design communal style. The food looked fantastic and tasted great. Many good Washoku dishes. In addition to the 5 veg-only dishes, some of the veg plus protein dishes may be vegan as well. Just ask. Two of those 5 were as well when I went.
