Compost Plates!

If you’re veg*an and have ever wondered what the fuss over the Rochester “garbage plate” is, this place is for you. They offer a veggie equivalent, the “compost plate,” which can be made gluten free as well.

Great vibe, good food, lovely juices. If I ever pass through Rochester again, I’ll be back!

Pros: Compost plate, Large baked goods section, Lovely juices

All vegan and great

Everything we had was excellent. Buffalo cauliflower appetizer, vegan cheese steak, a vegan chicken salad, and terrific vegan desserts (mint oreo choc cake and a great cheesecake). All the wine and beer are vegan as well

Unsatisfying

I’ve been to Red Fern a handful of times, each visit trying to hope for improvements. However, I’ve been consistently disappointed with their food. It is often bland, not high quality, and the desserts are often in weird combinations. As well, the water often tastes like chlorine whenever they put lemon in it. The only food I have enjoyed there was the truffles. I appreciate that it is a fully vegan restaurant, however I don’t recommend their food, especially for people transitioning to veganism.

Pros: Fully vegan restaurant

Cons: Bland food, Odd food combinations

Red fern never disappoints! Their weekly specials are always amazing, especially their flatbreads. Their regular menu includes soups, sandwiches salads and more. Highly recommend trying their quesadilla as well as their cheese platter! All of their desserts are amazing as well, especially their mint-Oreo cake and their peanut butter Rice Krispies. I also love that they serve kombucha from another local business, Katboocha as well as ice cream from Eat Me Ice Cream.

LOVED the Desserts

I went there for desserts + tea +Fresh Juice and they were fantastic! The vegan cakes and ice-creams and tea were really great. This is my go-to place for a sit-down restaurant to have vegan desserts in Rochester. I recommend trying the Samba Chai, the Beet-it Juice and a piece of Oreo-Mint Cake.

Pros: Desserts, fresh juices

Cons: Parking is limited on street

New customer for life!!

I was visiting Rochester for work. I went the first night and ordered the compost plate. It was great. Sweet potato mash Mac salad and their sauce. My friend got the lentil burger and we both finished everything on our plates. I ordered two orders of the wings to-go and a cookie. Which I was going to take with me but finished it before I left. The place is quaint in size but the staff and eaters are lively and having a fun time. Local kombucha and beer on tap. I had blueberry kombucha equally as good as everything so far. Went back for to-go food the second night. I ordered the steak bomb and Mac salad. Loaded nachos. And lentil loaf. Everyone at that restaurant I interacted with was knowledgeable and happy to be working there.

Pros: Everything is vegan , Large selection , Bakery case

Cons: Small kombucha jars

Amazing Restaurant!

It is small and cute. Although it was packed when I got there I was seated in 10 minutes and the food came at a reasonable time. The food is really good because it is classical favorites with a twist.

Pros: good food, nice staff

Cons: small, busy

Great food and staff

Amazing food. We had the steak bomber sandwich and the macaroni and cheese. Our waitress was super helpful in making recommendations as this was our first visit. Relaxed atmosphere with interesting decor. They have an impressive dessert display which did not disappoint!

perfection

As a vegan this is everything you could ever want. We got the compost plate (vegan version of the famous Rochester garbage plate), grilled cheese, quesadilla, flat bread, and crab cakes. So amazing that we got quite a few desserts to go. I highly recommend!

Hands down best vegan in rochester

I've been obsessed with the Red Fern since I went vegan about four years ago - I can't believe I haven't put up a review on HappyCow yet! It's a cute little restaurant tucked away on Park street, and a go-to for a lot of the veg community in the area.

The food is delicious - sandwiches and entrees that can will satisfy vegan and omnivore alike. I'd describe it as healthy comfort/american food. I think I've had the entire menu by now and have never been disappointed. The compost plate is a healthier take on a Rochester tradition, and whatever they put in their "meat sauce", it is addicting! To top it off, they always have amazing weekly and brunch specials, and delicious desserts that I can never leave without. My personal favorites on the standard menu are the steak bomber, the compost plate, loaded mac and cheese nachos, and the buddha bowl.

They also have many different allergen-free menus, including gluten-free, soy-free, and nut free menus. I'm able to take people with a variety of restrictions here and they always have a lot of options!

It's a small space, especially when they lose the outdoor seating during the winter, so they get packed easily. Would recommend making a reservation unless you're willing to wait, or going at an off time.

Easily my favorite restaurant, ever. It's so refreshing to be able to order anything on the menu and know that it is going to be both vegan and amazing. Thank you, Red Fern, for being so great!

Best Vegan Restaurant in Rochester

What an amazing place. We are so lucky to have Red Fern in Rochester. Great vegan sandwiches and dinners. From the "Compost Plate" (a vegan take-off of the classic Rochester garbage plate) to Buddha Bowls to Mac and Cheez to Lentil Burger to the ever popular Steak Bomb.

And the desserts are in the front case to tempt you on e way in and delay you on the way out.

Thanks to Andrea and her crew for creating a warm and wonderful vegan restaurant here in Rochester.

Pros: It's all vegan!, Interesting specials, Great menu

Cons: Not always enough seating for hungry vegans

Red Fern in Rochester NY, May 2017

This was a new restaurant visit for my son and his girlfriend who live in Rochester and are vegetarian; I am vegan & gluten-free and was visiting him. Red Fern was by far the favorite of all of us because of the large menu selection, the outdoor seating, satisfying portions, and the friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommended.

Pros: Large menu with options for all kinds of tastes, Gluten-free options available, Outdoor seating available and recommended

Cons: Small indoor seating area

Love this place

I love this place. As a vegan with a garlic intolerance, it is hard for me to find places to eat. They have menus for garlic free dishes and for gluten free options. The desserts are divine. I have eaten there several times, and every time it has been outstanding.

Pros: Scrumptious desserts, special menus for gluten free and garlic free , tasty food

Cons: small place - not much seating

Cakes are Amazing

The desserts here are amazing. It's worth it just to go for that.

I have only had the meals a few times here so I cannot comment too much on that. I have not found anything I liked the taste of for the food part so far. Will have to try more dishes in the future.

delicious and unique!

I loved this place! Got a fresh juice, Buddha bowl and zucchini noodle salad with tempeh bacon on top and everything was delicious! They also had desserts but I was too full to get any. Will definitely be returning.

Pros: lots of options
