British

London's first vegetarian pub. Normal pub, with an upstairs tea room serving vegetarian food. Free Wi-Fi. Note that English beer is sometimes filtered using isinglass (from fish bladder), as is other alcohol, so check barnivore.com to see which alcoholic drinks are veg. Otherwise, the food is vegetarian and vegan. Closed in current format and taken over by Fuller's to be refurbished. Update Aug 2019 - is open, but not serving food currently. Please keep HappyCow updated.

Fun pub experience

I went here pre-pandemic (so I apologize if this review is out-of-date). The downstairs pub is very basic and pub-y (even a tad dingy) and upstairs there is a cozier dining room, where we enjoyed a good pub meal of tofu fish and chips. Love the concept.

Pros: Vegan-friendly pub

Cons: A bit of a dive

Londons Best Pub

I love a good pub, and i love it even more when you can get the best tofush and chips I've ever eaten. A great place to hide away from the hustle of London and have a quite bite and a pint

Pros: PUB, BEER, VEGAN PUB GRUB

Okay

Meal was tasty if you like tofu (a lot of tofu) however the room was not a nice eating environment- badly decorated and cats wandering around- NOT the most hygienic!

Fantastic

Traveling from NZ, had heard great things about the Tofush and Chips meal served here so put it in the ‘Must Do’ list and I’m so pleased we made it!
Delicious meal! Fantastic service in a gorgeous, authentic pub. Love the character and atmosphere! Will come back whenever we are in London and recommend to everyone!

Delicious and so cool!

I had never heard of tofish and chips before eating here, but OMG. You have to try this dish at Norman’s Coach and Horses while in London. It blows my mind how creative vegan and vegetarian chefs are. This place is so, so good!

Pros: Delicious food, Creative, Friendly staff

Cons: Crowded, Can be pricey

Excellent fish n chips

Really good vegan fish and chips. Whole peas instead of the mushy ones which was good. Service was quick, prices were reasonable. Would go again if I had time.

Super busy but worth it!

We were waiting for a chance to eat for ages! It’s a super busy pub probably go at an odd time. However we loved the fish and chips when we got them!

Room for improvement

It was nearby and it was raining so we gave it a go. We were offered the choice of eating in the (slightly in need of renovation) downstairs bar or upstairs to the (renovator's dream) "secret tea room" where they do afternoon teas (V or VG) and the main menu. We went for the Tofush & Chips (a block of tofu wrapped in seaweed and batter) plus chips and peas (both very good) and the Superfood Salad which was apparently rather good. The Tofush is at best just ordinary and does not compare with the vegan fish and chips now available in a lot of Greene Kings pubs (which is superb).
In the main bar downstairs they have a notice which lists which of their beers are vegan.

Disappointing

I went here for my 21st Birthday with mu work hoping to show them delicious vegan food. However, when we arrived they took hours to get the food as well as not having half of the menu. Half the food was cold and fairly tasteless. I got the Tofush amd chips which is supposed to be their signature dish but I can only say its ok? at least marinade the tofu so its not so bland! Its a shame. If you want a good Vegan pub go to the Blacksmith and Toffeemaker pub Their food is amazing!

Pros: Alcohol

Cons: Poor quality food poor service

Great good and service!

Vegetarian and vegan pub menu. We had the vegan "fish" and chips! We had a pleasant surprise when one of the two pub cats jumped up on one the chairs next to us when we sat down. Such fun!

Pros: Good veggie and vegan options

Standard

Although the food was quite tasty, and there were vegetarian options, I couldn't help but feel like this was nothing but an ordinary pub. Nice atmosphere though.

Pros: Pies were nice, Nice atmosphere, Vegetarian options

Cons: Just a pub

Vish and Ships and vegan pie

The Vish is a bit bland but still very tasty due to the great batter, the pie delicious. The tearoom alone is worth a visit. Nice and helpful staff.

Vegan British Food in Trafalgar Square

I should say that I'm not sure exactly where we were... we planned on being in the Picadilly Circus-Trafalgar Square area, namely because that's just what you do when you're a first time tourist in London. But, it was very cold and very late, we had landed just hours before and were wandering the crowded Friday night streets riding the adrenaline high and not much else. I knew we'd have to eat at some point so I pulled out my trusty Happy Cow app hoping that we were in proximity to one of the places I had scoped out in advance. To my delight, Coach & Horses was a five-minute walk from where we had wandered to! Tofush and Chips seemed so very appropriate for our first dinner in London, so off we went!

The dining room sits two flights of stairs above a crowded pub that overflowed into the street, pints seeping down the edges with various shades of dark beer. The actual interior of the place reminds me of a vintage dollhouse but with all the furnishings removed, stripped down but leaving the essentials. Upstairs, the dining room was no different, except that if this was truly a dollhouse it was definitely the little girl's room. Tea-rose pink walls in various states of disrepair contained small dining tables and showcased mismatched tea sets. It was quaint, but not on purpose, it really was just "there".

Our actual meal was, of course, the Tofush and Chips, along with a mushroom pie served with more chips and a sizeable helping of peas. The Tofush was essentially half a block of tofu wrapped in seaweed with a traditional batter. The pie was exactly that- a savory pie in a flaky crust, swimming in a pool of dark, smooth gravy.

It's extremely hard to get traditional offerings in England, so we were tickled pink that we could enjoy "fish and chips" and "steak and ale pie" in a vegan sense. The pie was delightful and everything I'd want out of a traditional savory pie, but the tofu fish did leave something to be desired. However, I would still go back and still order it, namely because it's the only establishment in the area bothering to make an effort. The batter was good, and what vegan doesn't love tofu anyway? Sitting in that dim and pink room, tiny window gazing onto the dark street and working my way through a pint, I was as happy as any vegan who just landed in London could be. And that was pretty damn happy.

Not great for vegans

Only one vegan meal (tofish and chips) which wasn’t that nice. Was a pretty grim environment too, very worn and the toilets were gross.

Fish and chips okay

I got the fish and chips and I must admit I wasn't overwhelemed - it wasn't overly fishy and felt just like a solid block of battered tofu. The tartar sauce and peas were nice. A friend got the onion rings which were really good. I prefer the tofish at Loving Hut, the Brook, and elsewhere.

The ambience was a bit flat. However, the staff were absolutely lovely.

Pros: Staff, Location

Cons: Taste, Ambience

Coach & Horses Pub / Secret Tearoom

Pub
Veggie pub the Coach and Horses has several vegan options on their main menu - tofish n chips and several different pies with mash n gravy. The tofish n chips is excellent, really good batter and sauce. The pie n mash is great comfort food. Fillings such as leek, mushroom and chestnut / chilli bean / goulash. A couple of vegan choices of gravy too - we had very tasty mustard gravy. You can also get sides like onion rings - recommended!

Norman's Coach and Horses has a long history of association with Private Eye and boozy journalists - Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell is set there. Traditional tatty pub feel but with cartoons and memorabilia from the magazine and the play. It has a nice feel. There are a couple of cats in residence - it was sweet to see the humans in the busy pub searching for seats but happily leaving the ones claimed by the cats alone.

Secret Tearoom
You have to ask about the Tearoom and the entrance is behind the bar. It's a good idea to book in advance, particularly if you want to go at the weekend. You have to go upstairs where there is a vintage tearoom theme, including the music, which is cute. However, the service was incredibly slow and disorganised, even though they weren't busy, so don't go if you are in a hurry.
If they had been able to offer a whole vegan cream tea we'd definitely have ordered it but the only vegan thing they had was one cake, so we just had tea and cake - don't know why they don't provide a vegan option on the whole cream tea as that would be great and their downstairs offer is very vegan-friendly. The tea and cake were great, very rich chocolate and coconut cake and a good pot of tea (they have a massive range of teas).

good food

Food was nice, i had the goulash pie, mash and gravy, I throughly enjoyed it! My boyfriend enjoyed his ‘fish’ and chips! Brilliant food! Although when we arrived they didn’t have all of the food options, though we did go later on a sunday so this could explain why! Wouldn’t go here if you’re looking for somewhere more fancy

Pros: good food, chilled atmosphere

Cons: female toilets had no loo seats, needs a bit of a renovation

Delicious!

Been here many times when I’ve visited London just so I can get my tofush and chips fix! The menu has changed recently (don’t worry, the tofush is still available!) but there’s less gluten free options than there used to be.
The two cats who live here, Earl and Grey, are beautiful, fluffy and friendly!

pleasantly average.

This place is okay. Granted the tofish and chips is literally a massive block of unseasoned, tasteless tofu. It’s okay. The pie is good. Please note this is a pub first, seats are limited.

horrible

Went here for an event I was hosting. The staff was so incredibly rude and messed up my reservation. I asked them if they could leave a sign for the rest of my group telling them where I would be they looked at it then tore it up in my face. Will never be going back there!

Tasty and convenient

For those of you not in the know, this restaurant is literally across the street from where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is put on. They start serving food at 5 which is perfect for going in between parts of the show.
Solid vegan chilli short-crust pie and mashed potatoes. Servers definitely slow and kind of quiet/kept to themselves, but very nice people.
Bonus points for having two adorable cats running free in the building!
