This place was delicious when I went a few years back and this time it’s seemed to be way less great. My partner and I got the pickle chicken sandwich, then Ceaser chicken sandwich, a quarter pound of Mac salad, and garlic fries. Both our fries were soggy, not crispy at all, and almost 4$ extra for each of them. The Mac salad was DELICIOUS but the quarter pound container we got served wasn’t even full, only like 8-10 bites in it. Sandwiches were good, but really mid.

Top Notch Comfort Food - Edit
If you want a delicious and decadent lunch or dinner, I highly suggest the Butcher's Son. Everything is delicious, fresh and fantastic. There is outdoor and indoor seating, you order at the counter and then sit down and they bring you the food. The pulled pork sandwich was absolutely phenomenal in the Caesar salad is one of our favorites. They also have food to go already packaged, their macaroni salad is delightful.

Outstanding vegan comfort food - Edit
I had the "Jalapeño Business", a sort of cheesesteak with amazing plant steak, slightly less amazing bacon, and a nice greasy bun. The staff was awesome. I especially appreciated the shaker of nooch! I'm headed back to Korea, but wish I lived in Berkeley to eat here all the time.

This was extremely tasty. If you are really hungry, this is your place. And I can only recommend to invest the 3$ for the vegan blue cheese. Also the garlic fries were something special! Wish I could have taken some with me.

The food was really good. I had the fried chicken and bacon bagel sandwich and my husband had a pancake with a chocolate glazed donut cooked inside of it! The garlic fries were also super yummy and SO garlicky. We’ll definitely return when we’re back in town.

Literally this place can do no wrong. Everything is so good and their brunch menu is to die for. Some of the best vegan sandwiches I’ve ever had. Personal favorites are the old timer and #thisismyaddiction for brunch and the chicken pesto and bbq pork sandwiches on the normal menu.

3 Days in Berkeley - 3 Butcher Visits - Edit
Unique menu with plenty of variety. After having lunch there three days there is still so much more on the menu that I would like to try. Also the garden patio for outdoor dining was a pleasant surprise. Don’t sleep on the chocolate chip cookie.

Innovative vegan sandwiches in Berkeley - Edit
As a precursor to this review Butcher's Son is 100 percent vegan, 100 percent plant-based, 100 vegetarian which all mean the same thing. As is the previous incarnation of Butcher's Son across the street Butcher's Son is Katz's Delicatessen gone vegan as sandwiches such as the "steak & cheese sandwich" are labeled on the menu like this as opposed to "vegan steak & vegan cheese sandwich" or "faux steak & vegan cheese sandwich" etc.
Read moreStaff at the previous location told me there was once a customer who used to frequent them daily who thought he was eating real meat & when he found out it was vegan he was quite upset as a result stopped going to Butcher's Son.
I frequented the old location heaps of times as loved the innovative vegan menu. I tried many of the sandwiches yet at the old location probably my favorite was the steak & cheese sub out the seitan for jackfruit & add avocado w/ a side of potato salad.
On arrival I asked my server for suggestions as the menu is even now more extensive. She helped me customize a unique sandwich as upon her suggestion had the tuna melt sub white fish made from jackfruit served on sliced sourdough garlic bread w/ tomato, smashed avocado w/ vegan mozzarella.
I loved that they now have an outdoor patio as was a warm sunny evening where I went outside to enjoy my sandwich. After you order they give you a number & will bring your sandwich to you even if you are sitting outdoors on the patio. This is where I met a vegan couple who just went vegan 6 months ago. It is indeed much easier to be vegan nowadays especially at Butcher's Son.
Nice atmosphere, found the sandwich satisfying yet perhaps a bit heavy. There are two all gender restrooms which is a nice addition as the old location didn't have a restroom.
So back to abundance the all vegan menu w/ gluten-free options feature 27 sandwiches, half a dozen sides. There is a Kid's Menu w/ three sandwiches. Two salads that you can customize at an additional charge w/ a dozen different items such as avocado, fresh vegan mozzarella etc.
Out of house items by local businesses such as Timeless coffee, Timeless Deserts etc along w/ Oaktown Spice Shop Spices. Bread & Butter Cakes.
Out of state items like Oatly Oat Milk from NY & Pacific Almond Milk from OR etc
Out of Country items like Authentic Organic Sauerkraut from Poland etc
Out of this world might be the best way to describe Butcher's Son!

I had the Panko tofu breaded (“chicken”) burger with some extra blue cheese. It was superb - i ate it all and didn’t even feel violated as usually happens after eating fast food.

I was overwhelmed by the variety of sandwich options for lunch, but finally settled on the hot chicken pesto sandwich. It was yummy and filling, and ended up being two meals! I also love the garlic fries on the side and the big ol’ pickle.

We got the Reuben and the jackfruit sandwiches and an order of the garlic fries. It was delicious and very filling. Crazy good. I don’t think a carnivore could tell the difference so they would love it too. We will definitely eat there again the next time we are near Berkeley.

Vegans will admit that fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes are healthy for humans, the animals and the planet. Faux meats are processed and not as healthy. But! Sometimes you may need to revisit your pre-vegan days while staying true to your new lifestyle. If so, go to The Butcher’s Son on University Ave in Berkeley. Their enormous list of sandwiches is incredibly diverse, delicious and all vegan! We had the Reuben and the Chik’n Parm. So big we had to take half home which made for a great late night snack. Be sure to add fries with each sandwich, they load them on and they’re crispy good. And enjoy the outdoor patio in the back. Great environment.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? This place is a gem! I got to have my first mozzarella sticks since going vegan, and they did not disappoint! (Although be prepared, they are almost comically big.) Super tasty food and great selection that will have you chucking out any memories you were clinging to of classic meat-centric American delicatessens. I don’t think you can go wrong here… unless you’re gluten free. Then proceed with caution. 😆

The Butcher’s Son knows how to do vegan food - probably because he has seen more than he wants being a butcher’s son. The sandwiches and salads are so good. The baked goods are absolutely delicious. It’s the vegan cheese that has me totally hooked. The feta on my salad was incredible!
