Quality at somewhat reasonable prices - Edit
If you're between spending $8 for an impossible whopper or a classic roll at this place then this place all day.
Read moreTane (and Shizen) offer high quality ingredients, plating, and taste to all of their decisions, specifically the eggplant nigiri. The eggplant melts in your mouth and does not require any chewing but is full of flavor.
The speciality rolls are also of good value because they range from $16-17 & come with 8 pieces. The 1 menu item that was on the pricier side was the cheesecake which was priced at $15. Nevertheless the pricepoint is worth it because it has to be one of the bay area's best cheesecakes.
Never a bad experience at Tane.
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing (ok maybe parking)

Vegan Japanese, reasonable prices, fun spot (5/5 green stars) - Edit
I’m glad I took the time to write this review, or I wouldn’t have learned about Tane Vegan Izakaya. I learned that Izakaya is “a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks,” similar to a tapas bar. I also learned that Tane in Berkeley is a sister branch to the original Tane in Honolulu! Also, Tane, means "seed" in Japanese and it embodies the restaurant’s “commitment to sustainable and innovative dining.” The same people are behind Shizen, the popular vegan Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. The founders’ goal is to protect the oceans by showcasing tasty Japanese dishes that are made without fish. I think they have succeeded in delivering a diverse menu of satisfying and interesting dishes.
Read moreI’ve been there twice now and look forward to going back for a third visit. The second visit was marred a little bit by a loudmouth bore at the next table, but I can hardly hold Tane accountable for that...😄Just bear in mind that it can get a little noisy at night, when it’s busy. Staff members were friendly and efficient both times and the food seems to be quite consistent. The simple grilled mushrooms dish ($12) is a good example of the restaurant’s aesthetic – good ingredients, cooked quite simply so that their inherent qualities are not lost.
I’m also giving Tane Vegan Izakaya 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact.
• Tane is a completely vegan restaurant. Adopting a plant-based diet is the top thing you can do to mitigate climate change, deforestation, animal cruelty, and food scarcity.
• Tane strives to support suppliers that use eco-friendly practices (e.g., pesticide-free) and to minimize their carbon footprint “by reducing waste and sourcing seasonal ingredients directly from local farmers.”
• The website for the original Honolulu branch of Tane lists some of the produce suppliers, but the Berkeley branch hasn’t done this (yet).
Please join in and include a Green Stars rating with your own reviews!
Pros: Fully vegan, Fresh ingredients, prepared simply, Friendly staff
Cons: Can be noisy at night

Delicious sushi & ramen - Edit
As a vegan lover of ramen, theirs was delicious. It came with this smoky meat sort of tofu thing that I wasn't the biggest fan of but the broth and ramen itself were delicious, the broth had this incredible flavor and the ramen was springy and chewy. The California roll was also delicious, the rice was really high quality and tasted great as well.

Cons: Didn't like the smoky flavor of the meat in the ra

THE BEST VEGAN SUSHI - Edit
I have brought multiple omnivores here and everyone agrees that Tane (a.k.a. Shizen in SF) is 10/10. My FAVORITES are Pacifica and Sunset. The Sweet Potato roll is delicious too at a lower price.
Read moreI do wish they had some rotating specials though. As far as I know, the menu has been the same for 5 years (referring also to Shizen, which has been open longer and has the same dishes by different names)

I’ve taken so many meat eaters to this restaurant and they’ve all been blown away by this food. The specialty rolls are so creative, tasty, and instagramable😉the ramen is also exceptional. I’ve been going to this restaurant for years, and I have not tried a thing that I didn’t love.

What is interesting about this place is they do some unusual sushi. Not your typical sushi. Everything is wonderful and delicious. Small place, so best to make a reservation. It has become our go to place for special occasions. Beautiful presentation. Wonderful service. Definitely recommend checking it out.

amazing shared plates restaurant - Edit
the shared plates and appetizers here are amazing. it’s actually very reasonable to have a family style meal here and I would definitely recommend doing so over getting the sushi individually. the eggplant, brussels sprouts, tofu mushroom pockets, and katsu are my go-to.

Fire!!✨ - Edit
Yummy! I got the okra nigiri and shoyu ramen.
Read moreI appreciate that they have condiments on the table as soon as you sit down. Ginger, wasabi and soy sauce. Without those ingredients the food would have been just 'ight imo. The okra w pickled ginger on top started me off right! Then the ramen came and had a very light flavor. I mixed up the whole chunk of wasabi w plenty soy sauce and poured that in ramen as well as the rest of the ginger. Hooked that ramen up!!!!! 😋😋😋✨ so good!
Came by myself on a Friday night and was seated in 5 minutes. Definitely will return!

Sushi paradise!
Read moreThis place is packed every night so definitely make a reservation a week in advance or sit at the bar if it’s full.
It’s hip, modern, with nice moody atmosphere
Best Japanese sushi rolls and ramen! Everything was super good and it’s rare to come across a ramen that isn’t super heavy or greasy yet still tasty.
Not a fan of the bao bun here the bread was dry and crumbled and just simply not a fan of the fake meats in general although it did taste really good I probably wouldn’t get it again.

Creative vegan sushi - Edit
In a world where non-vegans are incapable of fathoming what ‘vegan sushi’ would consist of, and when one does find vegan options at a sushi place it is invariably simple avocado or cucumber rolls, Tane has built an entire business around the traditional Japanese experience without attempting to replicate fish texture or flavor through mock meat. Their rolls are wonderful celebrations of plants with homemade sauces and immaculate presentation.
Read morePros: Little to no mock meat, Presentation, Atmosphere
Cons: Time limit
