Fill your hole with a big bowl of Soul …

Soul

I’ve lived in Malaysia with locals for several months and this is as authentic in style and flavour as you’ll get anywhere. Posher … but very much the same.

Menu. It has a small but great selection of authentic cuisine including the famous Rendang and a Specials board too. We shared 3 dishes. Starter, Noodle and Main …

Starter - Salt and Pepper Lotus £6.50. Light crispy fried but not greasy sliced lotus root crisps one a bed of warm pepper and red onion salad. Lovely on the own with damn good flavour, but really elevated when dipped in the Laksa ….

Noodle - Laksa £11.50. A huge bowl of noodle soup made to absolute perfection. Being Malaysian it’s not hot spicy, but instead it has a depth of complexity, richness and smoothness you don’t find in other eastern noodle soups. It’s distinctive Malay taste stands out flavouring the noodles, vegetables wantons (what a treat getting these in it) and seitan. It’d be unfair not to comment on this - best seitan I’ve had in a noodle soup yet - honest.

Main - Soul’s Special Deep Fried Tufu £11.90. Tofu which has been mixed with eastern veggies then reconstituted into logs before being crisped up and served with a delicious glutinous gravy, tender stem broccoli and a garnish. I adored it. Crispy, tasty and like I’d never had before.

The place is chilled, nice music in the background, informative and tentative waitress, a great experience.

Would I go back? Yes and I’ll be booking in advance.

Would I recommend? Yes. It authentic, imaginative well cooked Malaysian food.

Delicious, and packed with flavour!

A genuinely lovely experience, the staff there were attentive and lovely. The food was absolutely delicious, we had the crackers with dipping sauce, tofu satay, lions main rendang and mapo tofu! All excellent, generous portions, also affordable.

Will be back!

Not the best

Enjoy trying all new vegan places so keen on giving this a go. Unfortunately this place was not great, it's ok but lacking flavour and it's particularly disappointing when taking non-vegans...they assume all vegan food lacks flavour! I would not go back and would therefore not recommend.

Pros: Vegan

Cons: Does not feel very authentic, Lacking flavour , Not the cheapest

Delicious, imaginative, cosy and 100% vegan

As others have said, Soul Vegan is a wonderful new addition to the Edinburgh vegan scene, taking over the building which used to be occupied by Bonsai.

We went on a Wednesday evening, the place was packed (reservations are essential!), but the staff were welcoming and efficient, and we didn’t have to wait long for our food. The menu is nice and simple, and the prices reasonable. (Some people say they are on the high side, but prices have gone up across the board, for obvious cost-of-living reasons.)

Both starters were great, and we had to try the unusual ‘deep-fried cabbage balls’. My laksa main was very generous, very flavoursome and ideal for a cold winter evening. I would be interested next time to try the Soul’s special deep-fried tofu that my friend had.

As with Sen Viet Vegan, I am planning to gradually go through everything on the menu!

Pros: Delicious food, Generous portions, Reasonable prices

Amazing - go!

Food was superb - we had green curry, Mapo tofu and sweet and sour dragon’s mane with fried rice, fried noodles and salt & pepper chips. Mains are substantial and sides are one person portions, so three between three was right. Everything tasted lovely and distinctive; it wasn’t samey as you can find with this sort of food. Vegetables varied and proteins were all different.
Only one person serving front of house. She worked her ass off and was lovely.
Great little place, would highly recommend. It was packed and that speaks volumes.

Pros: Great variety of dishes, Excellent value for money, Lovely warm service

Fast, tasty and friendly

Great range of interesting dishes. Have been twice and tried 5 starters and 3 mains - working my way through the menu! It’s BYOB but didn’t see that advertised anywhere. It’s not big so recommend booking.

Excellent Malay food

This is a very welcome addition to the veg food scene in Edinburgh - absolutely excellent food, served quickly and piping hot, with friendly service and pleasant ambiance. The menu is varied - especially given the relative novelty of finding Malaysian food in Edinburgh - and the prices are hard to begrudge for how good the food is. If you'd wanted to try Malay cuisine but been put off out of fear of the ubiquitous prawn paste, this place should be very high up your list to go next.

Pros: Excellent, fresh food, Good selection, Fast and friendly service
