Great vegan cakes, excellent value - Edit
Cafe SoVegan has a great range of vegan cakes - my favourite so far is the Oreo cheesecake. They offer some delicious sounding savoury food too.
Read moreEdit - this review was for Cafe SoVegan which was based out of the Royal Sovereign in 2016. They no longer operate from the venue, but the pub does offer a lot of vegan-friendly food options still.

Please note that the reviews below mine were for the pop-up vegan cafe that used to be in this pub. This pop-up has since closed down and instead the pub has added a permanent vegan section to it's menu.

Vegan passion in a pub! - Edit
The Royal Sovereign is just about the last of the punk friendly pubs in Hackney. It looks and feels like it did years ago and there are locals including old punks who have been there for years. What is new is the day time food service. Please note I say DAY TIME because unfortunately this cafe closes at 4pm! Cafe So vegan is run by a pair of passionate vegans as shown not just in the delight they show in making such good food but in talking about it to you! I loved the look on the chefs face as she described future baking creation plans! The menu is made of their personal favourites like "macaroni cheese" and "french toast". Cauliflower nuggets and onion rings are as good as I have had at any super posh place. My companions had the breakfast burrito and then had trouble managing any dessert. I polished of the macaroni cheese which came in a generous portion and almost beat memories of my mothers version back in my childhood, (See photo). I will return soon to try the quiche. There are plenty of sweet things - not so many without refined sugar unfortunately. Their "Hackney" salads come from the local organic Growing Communities crew.
Read moreIf you choose a sunny or even non rainy day to visit their is a large outside seating area out the back. The pub was super quiet which I guess is why pubs are closing as fast as DVD rental shops, but this cafe deserves to survive. If it was open in the evening I would be there tonight!

Pros: Tasty vegan homemade food , Made by passionate vegans, Relatively cheap and interesting menu
Cons: Only open during the day time, Liable to occasional closure, check first., More sugar free options would be cool.

Good Food good price - Edit
Tried this place at the weekend and really enjoyed the food. Would like to see some more gluten free options on the main menu although the chocolate cake on the dessert menu made up for this!

Delicious food in relaxed pub - Edit
I went on the opening day and enjoyed it so much I decided to go back for my birthday. The food is great - I've tried the Caribbean stew (which had lots of tasty okra and came with rice and peas) and the tofu quiche with salad. The cakes are delicious. A nice relaxed vibe and friendly staff make this a new favourite. It's a little off the beaten track but worth the journey if you're in the mood for a good value vegan pub lunch.
