Great food and ambiance - Edit
I came here with two non-vegan friends and they loved it!! The dan dan noodles and udon noodles were flavorful and creamy, and the bang bang broccoli was amazing.

Planta is always a must - Edit
Best upscale vegan dinner I’ve had is planta in any city where there is one. Thrilled to find this one in Chicago and it lives up to the reputation of the spots in NYC and Miami.

Room for Improvement - Edit
Their small dishes always impress! Larger/main dishes usually leave something to be desired. We've also been to the NYC location and prefer the decor/vibe here, but service was mediocre. We never received the drink we ordered, and all plates come out at once. There's not really enough room on the tables if each person orders more than one item. We come back for their sushi plates!

Really tried to love it - Edit
I discovered Planta Queen in NYC 2 years ago. Our meal was so delicious, we went back multiple times and again last year and were always impressed. I have also visited Planta Queen in Toronto and was impressed there as well.
Read moreBut something about this Chicago location just doesn't do it. I've tried out this location 4x and it's consistently hit or miss. The smaller plates tend to be incredible, at least i thought that until my last visit. I've had the torched and pressed, the eggplant nigiri, the baked crab and the dragon roll. The torched and pressed was phenomenal, the eggplant Nigiri was excellent the first time i had it but not the second, dragon roll was great, and the baked crab left something to be desired especially for the price. I have also enjoyed the queen Caesar, the Japanese sweet potato, and the gyoza. The sweet corn dumplings and the 1000 layer potatoes were just okay.
We have noticed that the entrees are always the most underwhelming dish - the worst we had was the General D's Cauliflower. For a vegan restaurant at the caliber of Planta Queen, I was shocked to find raw tofu chunks in this dish. Terrible watery texture and zero flavor. I would expect something like that in a cheap Chinese restaurant, but Planta Queen, really?!
I was super excited to finally get to this Planta Queen location for brunch, as that's what made us fall in love with Planta Queen in NYC. We went yesterday and it was our final let down that told us that we won't be eating at Planta Queen Chicago again.
I can't speak at length about the service, as I've only ever been seated at the bar. Even when I went at like 4pm on a Tuesday. Maybe this is my fault because I've never made a reservation, but I also never needed one in NYC or Toronto to be seated at a table and receive excellent service. Every time except once, being seated at the bar I felt like an after thought (maybe that's what you're signing up for being seated at the bar??).
We recently went to the vegan restaurant Bloom in Chicago, and decided that Bloom will be replacing Planta Queen for us. I'm sad to say it, but I gave Planta Queen many chances and can't take another let down.

Menu is 100% plant based. Eastern influence. Everything we tried was excellent and fresh. Full service higher end on the prices, but quality and creativity meet the costs. (There is no pizza or pasta)

Weak - Edit
Ate here once and ordered delivery several times due to their proximity and extended delivery hours. Their vegan sushi used to be alright but it seems they have changed how they prepare it, and now it’s just gross. I also found most of their other dishes unhealthy, often bland, oily, or overly sweet.

Perfect nice date night restaurant! - Edit
We have wanted to go to Planta Queen for a long time but it just has not worked out. We finally went, and it definitely lived up to the hype! The food was overall great (especially the dragon roll and bang bang broccoli) and the atmosphere was excellent.

Packed & Subpar Sushi - Edit
I wouldn’t go here again unless I was downtown and had cash to throw away. But there are much better vegan sushi places in Chicago. Overrated, but would come back if there were no other places nearby for me to eat at.

Nearly perfect - Edit
I had the Bang Bang broccoli, Singapore noodles and the Udon(truffle). The sauce on the broccoli is perfect, most of the broccoli was well done the rest had too much batter and were gooey inside. ( beginner mistake). The udon with mushrooms and truffles had a lovely texture soft but with a bite to the noodles, the sauce was deep and rich, it needs a bit of acid (chopped pickled ginger?) to take the dish to the next level. I have found the the rule of Acid, Fat, salt and heat never goes wrong.

Best Vegan in Downtown Chicago - Edit
PLANTA Queen is a higher-end Japanese inspired vegan restaurant in the Loop. My sister recommended this spot and I came here to try their lunch special ($28) which includes a starter, main, and a cookie for dessert.
Read moreMy oh my, were my expectations exceeded when it came to the high quality nature of our dining experience and the food.
We tried two of each. For our apps, we had the Spinach Black Bean Dumplings and their Bang Bang Broccoli. OMG, the broccoli was fire! The fiery peanut sauce was fabulous and serving that with tempura broccoli was delicious. We also enjoyed our dumplings but for sure would get the BBB again.
For our mains, we had their Ahi Tua Tartare made from beets as well as their Mushroom Truffle Udon. I enjoyed the marinade in the tartare and it was a nice dish with great texture served with chips. However, the real star were the udon noodles, where the mushroom truffle sauce truly elevated the entire meal. Although a bit on the saltier side, it was delicious and one that I'd order again and again. If only they had extra noodles or rice, because at the end of the day, we really wanted more ways to enjoy the stew.
Not to mention that this restaurant is gorgeous. Perfect for a date night or with friends on a special occasion.
Thanks so much Planta for a phenomenal lunch.
Pros: Excellent lunch set menus

Great - Edit
Went for the first time with my family on Christmas Eve and the food was great. They in particular loved the crispy rice sushi and the bang bang broccoli. Entrees were also amazing. The only reason I would not give it five stars for now was because there seemed to be a fruit fly/gnat issue. We kept getting a couple around our food and once we got rid of a few there would be more. Thought it was just unlucky but there was also a lot while we were near the exit and restrooms. Would definitely visit again and hopefully will have no issues with that the next time!

Best Vegan Food / Christmas Eve Tradition - Edit
Another amazing meal at Planta!! It's become a Christmas Eve tradition now. My favorite is the Dan Dan noodles and Bang Bang broccoli. The toffee pudding was out of this world and I wish I would have gotten two because my fiance gobbled it up despite being stuffed. The atmosphere there is amazing. It's a little on the pricey side but well worth it as I could never make these dishes at home. Highly recommended.

Exceptional! - Edit
If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would. We dined here for my birthday dinner and had exceptional service, great food and experience. The atmosphere and vibes were good all around. It was a fine dining experience but casual enough to have Easy E playing on the radio. The food portions are all big enough to share so you can really try so many different items. The staff went above and beyond when it came to customer service, which is really hard to come by these days so that made the whole experience even better. I also should add that they are always pretty busy, reservations are recommended.
