Best food ever! - Edit
I have been coming to Mother Chus for more than 23 years and always feel nourished with the beautiful vegan dishes Sophie and her family create. The service and the quality is by far the best.

I liked it - Edit
I liked it, but my friend who has much more experience with Taiwanese food wasn't as impressed. Like every restaurant these days, it was a little bit oily. But the eggplant was great. I'd go again for sure. If you're into that stuff, there's a lot of fake meat, but there are also some dishes based on just plain old-fashioned vegetables for those who are on the whole foods bandwagon.

So good - Edit
We tried the BBQ Pork Buns (personal favourite) and soup, and two mains. The soup was good, my main was perfect, tofu and mushrooms. The third dish was ok.

Delicious - Edit
The other reviews were right. This place serves delicious food and the menu is extensive. The decor is basic and unpretentious but it's the tasty food and nice staff that make this place. I'll be returning for sure. PS you can find steamed 'pork' buns here ... Yum!

Mother Chu's - Edit
Wow after a hiatus of over 9 years we revisited this long time vegan restaurant. I stepped into a place where time has stopped, nothing has changed. Decor, cashier's table, ordering station same. I enquired after Mrs Chu who used to sit every evening in the same chair, that was still there and was told she passed on last year 96yrs great supporter of the Vegan Society (NSW). We had for lunch a plate of mixed veggies with bean sprouts ($18) and a plate of greens Cai Lan ($12).

Oh only change were the prices haha.

It was great but not super duper - Edit
I enjoyed my lunch. The spring rolls were a bit tasteless and hard but the dim sims were delicious.
Read moreI had a mushroom rissole hot pot but my wife hated the flavour of the rissoles. I was quite happy with that dish but it certainly didn't blow me away.
Overall, mainly Chinese flavours so if you don't like that you may not like it.
I'm not too bad with chopsticks, but theirs seemed to be very shiny and slippery, so it was a struggle to pick up a piece of pumpkin or mushroom!
Pros: 100% vegan apart from some honey
Cons: Mainly Chinese flavours.

Flavourful umami meals - Edit
We ordered the wanton soup, eggplant clay pot and shiitake mushroom stir fry with tofu. Everything was delicious with the eggplant clay pot being the winner. The wanton broth was awesome but the wantons could use more flavour

Not so great - Edit
I went here due to the restaurants long standing history and reputation . The staff were great and friendly, service was quick but the food was just not great. It was pretty flavourless, the texture was bad and the vegies did not taste good. Did not end up eating it and would not go again. I hate to give a vegan place a bad review but they have to lift their game.

Traditional Taiwanese - Edit
Mother Chu's is a great spot for dinner. The service is quick and friendly, meals are affordable, but best of all are the flavours. My favourite dishes are the beans with soy slices and chilli sauce, and the soya bean rolls.

Not so great - Edit
My brother and I were looking forward to a nice meal but when we were in Sydney a couple of weeks ago but we were disappointed in this place. I can't quite remember what I had but it was definitely drowning in a salty, blah sauce. My brother had the birds nest something to other, just not very tasty. It is a pretty little place in a good location but we decided not to try it a second time while we were there. Maybe we hit it on a bad night!

When in Sydney... - Edit
Whenever I am working in Sydney I always eat here at some point. A few years ago the food was very average but on my latest trip I had stir fried tempeh with snow peas, broccoli and nuts along with special fried rice. It was fresh and delicious.

Don't waste your money - Edit
We went here on the basis of other reviews, however, I wish we had chosen one of the hundreds of other options that were located around this place. When you first order you have to pay straight away. This is probably to stop you from not paying due to the horrible food. I had tofu with vegetables which consisted of 10 pieces of old, deep-fried tofu sitting on what what seemed liked half a kilo of raw bean sprouts and topped with 6 slices of cucumber, with a tiny bit of soy sauce drizzled over top. My husband ordered stir-fried vegetables which came out swimming in some watery, flavourless sauce and appeared to have been cooked days ago and reheated. Same with the boiled rice which tasted like it was days old and reheated. I love rice, yet it was inedible as was most of our meals. I think we managed to eat around a quarter of each meal (and one mouthful of rice), only because we were so hungry, before we felt ill. We actually went and got a coffee somewhere else afterwards just to get the awful taste of the food out of our mouths. Greasy and tasteless food that was not cheap as I could get something delicious for that price elsewhere. SO disappointed, we definitely won't be going back.
