Loved this place!

We went here for dinner while staying in Prague for a couple of days. It was a little pricey, but the food was amazing so it was worth it! I had a vegan green curry, which was fantastic and my boyfriend had a vegetarian goulash (which can be made vegan!). We also shared a piece of raw chocolate cake with fig sauce that was fantastic! Would definitely recommend seeking this place out if you are in Prague!

Exquisite Dining!

This is a very attractive restaurant with beautiful and original interior decor. There are a few tables upstairs but plenty of seating downstairs. Many tables are usually reserved but we had no problem getting a table without reservations by avoiding peak times. This is a very hip restaurant. My husband had the goulash with vegan meat and couldn't believe it was vegan. I had the spinach salad with sundried tomatoes, capers, smoked tofu, and garlic and it was excellent. We ate here twice and were very pleased.

The Best

We have been traveling through Europe for over 3 weeks, and this is the best restaurant we have found. The food is fresh and delicious, the staff is extremely friendly, and the ambience is very peaceful. Even if you have non vegetarian friends you can take them here, the meat substitutes are incredible. Portions are very large, and prices are reasonable. I love this restaurant, it is almost reason enough to move to Prague.

Pros: excellent food, friendly staff, great ambience

It takes just one

I saved it for my last day in Prague just to feel sorry later.
They have just a few vegan dishes, but the one I ordered (curry, vegetables with coconut milk) was just PERFECT. I get hungry every time I remember it. ahhhhhhh

Great find in Prague

Everything on this menu sounded delicious. We had such a good meal here we went to Clear Head, their sister restaurant, for lunch the next day. Maitrea was the better of the two. Excellent food and service. Recommend reserving.

Pleasant Dining Experience

We visited the Maitrea restaurant for lunch on 27 May 2014 after reading many positive reviews on the Happy Cow website. This is a vegetarian restaurant with several vegan options. My husband had the cheese lasagne (vegetarian) and I had a salad (vegan). The salad was tasty, but too salty and soggy - but I managed to eat it all! The lasagne was very good, according to my husband. We had the vegan cheesecake for dessert - I like it, but my husband was not impressed and I also had cafe latte with rice milk, which was great. The restaurant was very busy, but we only had to wait @ 10 minutes for a table. The decor and ambiance were very tasteful, and the service was good and efficient. I would recommend this restaurant, but there was too much dressing on my salad.

Pros: Vegan Friendly, Nice Ambiance, Service

Cons: Too much salad dressing, Had to Pay for Tap Water, A bit tricky to find

Good Food & Atmosphere

I was quite please with the menu, plenty of vegan options. Staff weren't the friendliest, but not rude by any stretch, just not a warm and fuzzy kind of place which was surprising. I was quite happy with the food and juice. And dessert was amazing. It took a bit longer than I would have thought for my salad and was thrilled when it arrived and I saw that the soy chicken on it had just been cooked and prepared and was warm off the stove. It was delicious and everything was so fresh. If there hadn't been so many vegan spots I wanted to try in Prague, I would have definitely gone back.

Pros: Food, Atmosphere

Brilliant

By far the best vegan restaurant in Prague.
The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and the staff were very friendly and efficient. The only downside I could see would be that there was a bit of a wait between courses. It didn't bother us but might be an issue if you are limited with time.

Unlike some reviews suggest, there is a wide range of dishes for vegans compared to the Clear Head menu. They had one traditional style Czech starter that was suitable for vegans and two traditional mains to choose from. I tried the starter and one of the mains, both were delicious!
Being able to try local cuisine is always a big thumbs up for me.

Would recommend to anyone, vegan or not, visiting Prague just make sure you make a reservation! We were turned away the first night because it was so busy.

Pros: Excellent food, Good value, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Waiting time between courses

Central Location

A vegetarian restaurant that doesn't look like a unicorn's boudoir is always a bonus, and Maitrea scored full marks for decor- tasteful and contemporary.
The food was delicious and portions huge. I had the traditional Czech sausage for starters- always nice to be able to try traditional foods on holiday despite my vegan diet- it was very tasty. The menu offers foods for a variety of diets including raw, ayurvedic and takes allergies into account- all options are thoroughly labelled. There are a wide range of vegan starters and desserts but unfortunately only one main course (which doesn't really matter if you only intend to visit once)- Thai Green Curry. It was however, delicious. Chocolate Glace for dessert topped the meal off nicely. There is also a wide range of interesting local drinks on offer including mulled pear juice which I heartily recommend.

Pros: central location, large portions, reasonable prices

Cons: more vegan 'mains' needed

Tasty Food

The food here was good, I had the tofu and aubergine curry which was really good. My partner had a salad which was fine, but too much vinegary dressing. For dessert we had the raw chocolate tart, which was delicious. The menu was quite large, and very detailed in terms of ingredients and dietry requirements. Not a huge amount of vegan options, but a few that could be vegan on request, so enough to choose from. We went early at about 6, but still had trouble getting a table, so it's probably best to book. The service was ok, not the best, but by Prague standards (notoriously bad!) it was fine. We had to wait a while and ask to see the dessert menu, but we were in no rush so didn't really mind. Prices very reasonable and portions generous - for 2 mains, 1 dessert, beer and wine it came to les that £20.

Pros: Great Vegan Chocolate Tart, Price

Cons: Service A Bit Slow

Very disappointing - Not Recommended

Visited this restaurant for the first time today. I had to wait five minutes for a table so I assumed a full restaurant was a good indication of a good restaurant. How wrong I was. After waiting at least 15 minutes to get my order taken (I was on my way up to the bar to order it had taken so long), I then waited a good 30-40 minutes for my main to arrive. No explanation given or apology for the wait. Food was ok. After waiting further time I had to ask a waitress if my dessert was actually coming. During my 90 minutes in this restaurant (for only a main and dessert!) I watched two different sets of couples walk out due to long waits for their food, plus other disgruntled customers asking what was going on. Having only been here once I don't know if this is the norm or whether it was just a bad day. I would suggest in future that the restaurant keeps customers in the loop as to what is going on as I don't think any of the customers from today will be going back and certainly would not recommend it to anyone.

Pros: Raw chocolate cake

Cons: Extremely slow service, Overpriced food

So-so.

The entrees were good (the Czech sausage was really good), the home made ginger beer was great, but the main was disappointing, quite bland and flavourless. It was also more expensive than it needed to be, given the quality and portion size.

No super vegan, but delicious and beautiful

The latest review is right - there actually aren't that many vegan options here. But my boyfriend and I ate here 3 times during our time in Prague, and we managed to find stuff to eat each time. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. I especially enjoyed the sausage with onions appetizer and the vegetarian goulash. I didn't like the fresh squeezed juice because it had too much pulp in it, and the "special" coffee they serve here is actually pretty terrible. However, the lemonade really was great. The desserts were not very memorable. The service is not great, but you have to remember that you're in Prague, where friendly service is not a well known concept, so keeping that in mind, they actually do pretty well at this restaurant. Also, the decor is so absolutely beautiful, both upstairs and downstairs, that it's worth it to come here just for that.

Pros: Beautiful decor, Delicious food, Central location

Cons: Not many vegan options, Cool service, Drinks and desserts are hit or miss

Mediocre

I had lunch at Maitrea and was very underwhelmed. There was only 1 vegan main out of about 10, so very limited options for vegans, or vegetarians who don't feel the need to have cheese with every meal. The service was borderline between rude and dismissive. The food was bland and the rice undercooked. I just felt like there was very little care put into the food or service. The restaurant however is very central and absolutely lovely. I had a ginger lemonade with lunch and it was delicious. I was looking forward to my visit there and was disappointed. Unfortunately vegan food in Prague is not great so maybe it comes down to this being the best in a poor bunch.

Pros: Beautiful restaurant , Central location

Cons: Poorly cooked food , Limited vegan options

Beautiful surroundings, large menu, fine food

The restaurant has a very nice environment, with wooden interior (two floors), and an indoor fountain. The staff was really friendly too. The menu is large, and everything is well described and extremely thoroughly labelled (vegan, veganizable, raw, gluten-free, containing nuts/onion/garlic, ..). Food-wise, we thought that the vegan options of main courses was a bit limited: tree dishes (one of them raw), and one that could be veganized. The food was ok, but not quite as amazing as expected from other reviews. The Thai eggplant dish was a bit heavy on the vinegar, and the eggplant a little overcooked. The raw pasta was fine, but for my taste a bit too salty. But all in all, their selection of dishes has something for (almost) every taste.
If you need to find a restaurant for a diverse group of people, you won't find much better than this.

Pros: beautiful interior, labelling of food, large variety

Cons: uneven mix of ingredients (sometimes), limited vegan options

Pleasantly Surprised

Considering how close this restaurant was to the main tourist attractions, I was expecting it to be much more expensive! I was pleasantly surprised by the prices and how delicious the food was. Certainly the place if you are looking for a nice (but not outrageously priced) dinner in Prague with a loved one. I wish there was a second location farther away from the tourist attractions. I might've eaten here more than once if I didn't have to fight crowds of tourists to get there.

Pros: not outrageously priced, good food, close to tourist attractions

Cons: close to tourist attractions

great food

The food was great, but it was hard to find gluten or soy free options other than raw food. The staff was accommodating, and the restaurant is steps from the Old Town Square. Worth a stop for lunch or dinner, for sure. The superfood smoothie was unique and the dessert cheesecake was delicious!

Cons: not many soy or gluten free options

Beautiful Environment

The beautifully decked sister ship to the ultra wonderful Clear Head and a little easier to find just off the Old Town Square. Similar dishes are served and they have some good value daily specials. Simply a wonderful interior setting for a meal at any time but gorgeous at night when you can chill out for a couple of hours or so. The food here could potentially convert those meat eaters who want to cut out or reduce their intake.

Pros: great setting, food, atmosphere

Nice decor but surprisingly few vegan options

The restaurant's on two floors and we were recommended to go downstairs as there was room. It was nice downstairs with a beautiful water fountain, but as there were three of us, we had to sit on a larger table and were told we might have to shuffle around if it got busier. Not too welcoming.

The menu was interesting, it looked varied but in fact very few dishes were vegan or veganisable, so I was quite disappointed. The labelling was good, though. The drink selection was also strange, e.g. with a couple of odd flavours of green tea but no plain green tea.

Overall, it was a nice enough place, but I'm not sure I'd go back.

Pros: Non-smoking, Good quality food, Good value

Cons: Not much for vegans, Often parties need to share tables

Friendl atmosphere, delicious meal

I just went there today because of the recommendations from HappyCow. It's not that hard to find actually. The place has a really nice atmosphere and the waiter spoke English very well, which made me happy. Unfortunately there's really only one vegan main dish, but if go there for the first time it doesn't really matter. My meal was HUGE. And not only because I wasn't very hungry. I almost didn't finish it (which would be no problem, because the bag up your leftovers for free). I also had one of the fresh juices, which was a really good choice!
The also offer several entries and salads that are vegan, which should also make up a complete meal if you combine them.
The prices were ok, I had to pay 220 (roughly 9€) for my meal & drink.
Also the food came really fast!
If you plab to go there for dinner, make a reservation first! I got there without one but since I was there quite early (around 6:30 pm), I was offered one of the tables that was reserved for later.

What an amazing place to discover in Prague!

I was so happy when I came here for the first time on my trip to Prague - so happy, in fact, that I came twice more!

The food was delicious and there was a great range of it, and I loved the birch sap drink! I brought my host here for a meal and it had a lovely range of food and a nice setting; great for a special occasion or just a quality meal out.

Pros: Excellent food, Friendly staff, Good range of options

maitrea

I went there three times. First time food was just ok bit dry and service didn't bother with us a lot. Then I thought I will give it another shot so we went there again and it was good. Food was very nice but slow service. Third time I asked my friend to join us for a dinner and it was a mistake. I asked for Czech speciality called svickova and it to avoid harsh words it looked very unappetizing. I had really hard time to take a first bite. After few minutes I took the chance and tried it and it tasted awful. My partner tried it too and agreed to send it back to kitchen. Then things get worse when we asked service to take the plate and told serving girl it was uneatable (we did not ask to give us anything else). As this was xmas dinner we did not want to spoil our time with friend. Then we got all of sudden a reply from waitress "I do not think so". This was rude, out of hand and unprofessional. There was definitely no room for her opinion. She did not even ask why we said it was uneatable. We did not even hear back sorry from that girl.

Amazing - a crime not to dine here

Fantastic experience.

We came here for dinner on a saturday night and ordered the Gypsy Salad, Bohemian Plate and Sushi along with wine and selection of juices/drinks and were really delighted with the experience.

The staff were really friendly and helpful when ordering dishes. The ambience of the restaurant is awesome, with soothing colours, water features, curved arches and buddhas throughout the restaurant. The wines were delicious, as were the fresh juices.

Most importantly, the food was world class. The gypsy salad (tempeh, cubed potatoes and onions sautéed in a tasty sauce, on a bed of spinach and grated carrot) was absolutely delicious - probably the tastiest tempeh we've tasted in our the life. The sushi came in two varieties - stir fried vegetables and tofu - and was brilliant. And the bohemian plate (beetroot cakes, polenta, smoked tofu and red cabbage sauerkraut) provided a delightful array of flavours in every mouthful and provides vegetarians/vegans with a very helpful insight into czech cuisine. Portion sizes were excellent too, though we were too full to be able to try dessert.

It would be a crime for a veg*n to come to prague and not to come here for dinner.

Just make sure you come here early on in your trip so you can come back and try some of the other dishes. My partner and I came here for dinner only on our last night - so very disappointed that we didn't have space in our stomaches to try some of the other czech specialities like the goulash.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Great Ambience, Great Food

Cons: None

One of the best in Prague

I can definitely recommend this restaurant, they have (almost) the same menu as Lehka Hlava (Clear Head) and the same food quality and nice staff.

The design of this restaurant is simply stunning (don't forget to explore lower floor).

If you are in Prague, it would be a great mistake to miss this restaurant.

Pros: food quality, great restaurant environment, nice staff

Cons: need to make a reservation

A nice peaceful place in Prague center

In our recent trip to Prague, we decided to try this restaurant based on reviews on this site. We weren't disappointed. Actually it was very good and the staff was very kind. At first the menu was a bit confusing because of all the symbols for vegetarian, vegan, wheat free and even without garlic or onions. I felt that nobody was left aside... It even was written that meal was free for monks!

The decoration is exquisite, very beautiful, don't forget to look at the stairs and visit the toilets, every little space is a gem. So, it was very good, beautiful, peaceful and inclusive. If you like more hustle and bustle, you might like to try Lehka Hlava not very far away and with a similar menu. We personally prefer Maitra atmosphere.

Pros: excellent food, friendly staff, beautiful premises

A disappointment

My recent encounters with Maitrea were very disappointing. On two occasions when I went in without a reservation, I was treated very poorly. Even when I tried to make a reservation a couple days in advance, I was also snubbed. I was nothing but friendly and polite but got arrogant, dismissive treatment in return. On the third try, they had availability but were less than friendly upon seating me. On to the meal; I placed my order first, then my two companions. when they were done, the waiter then asked me what I wanted. I thought he meant to drink because I hadn't ordered a drink. I said I didn't want anything to drink and he said "no, to eat". I politely said that I had already told him what I wanted and then repeated my order. He hadn't written anything down the first time around so I thought he would write it down the second time, (upon realizing that he didn't remember the whole order two minutes after it was given) but he didn't the second time either. a few minutes later I got my meal and my daughter got hers. But the third meal didn't arrive with the rest. We waited a few minutes and then we started eating ours to avoid them getting too cold. More time passed. When the waiter finally reappeared, we asked where the other meal was. He said, blankly, "oh, yeah, no". That was it. I asked what that meant and he just repeated "oh, no". I asked if he even placed the order for that third meal and he then admitted that he hadn't. But he did not even offer to place the order then. He just stood there, vacant. no apology, nothing. There was not a language issue here , just a complete lack of professionalism. Since we were almost done with our meals at this point, we didn't bother pressing the issue about the third meal. What a disaster.

the food itself was average. I got the sausage appetizer and the seitan goulash main dish. both were ok but certainly nothing to rave about. the whole experience was such a disappointment.
