better than its sister restaurant! - Edit
I liked this place, the food and juices were good, and staff were friendly. There were even two dogs lying around near the bar - I'm not sure if they're a permanent feature of the restaurant. The labelling on the menu is very clear, including for nut allergies and gluten intolerances, although I would have liked to see more vegan options. Overall I preferred it to its sister restaurant Clear Head, which felt a bit more pretentious but wasn't as good in my opinion!

They know their tempeh. - Edit
This restaurant is owned by the same people as Clear Head, which I also visited while in Prague. The menu at first appeared to be the same because it had the exact same layout, but each restaurant had completely different main dishes. I am pretty sure the starters were similar.
Read moreLike with Clear Head, I visited here with a large group, though I had reservations here. They game us a special menu so that we would all be able to eat at the same time. I was able to have them modify a traditional Czech dish to be vegan. It was awesome. I must say that the fake meat they used may have been some of the best fo meat that I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

Food Okay Service... - Edit
The Restaurant is located near the Tyne church and looks cosy. When we entered we stood around for 2 minutes and then just sat down - it's normal that a waiter or waitress seats you... but here it depends on the person who is serving or rather not serving. The food was really good. We had the Czech Gulasch and a Salat with noodles. But the staff wasn't over friendly... another couple that came in after us and ordered after us got their food first. We hope the other options in vegan and vegetarian food won't disappoint us.

Such a lovely place - Edit
Maitrea is one of my favourite places to go. It just looks so lovely and I really love the food. They have a bunch of vegan options and I tried the yellow curry with faux shrimp. I was really surprised by the taste of these 'shrimps', I absolutely loved the dish. My SO had the beet pancake and he loved it too. They have really good raw cheesecake.

Good food, poor vegan knowledge of staff.. - Edit
My partner and I were in Prague a couple of weeks ago and we travelled across town to have dinner here, when we arrived it was 5 minutes past 10pm (I had read that the restaurant closed at 11.30pm so thought we had plenty of time) and were told that the kitchen was closed and we could only order cold tapas dishes. We were starving so accepted.
Read moreWe ate a few dishes and they were all good - a lot of hommus dishes on the menu. The restaurant had nice decor and was in a good area of the old town.
We made a booking for dinner a couple of nights longer. Due to being just late for our train we arrived just over 15 minutes late and they had given our table to others - it is a very busy restaurant (even though it is huge!). The lady said to wait and she would be able to find us a seat as there were only 2 of us. We didn't wait long before we were seated. We were anxious to order as it wasn't that long until 10pm and we were worried we were denied service.
The dish I wanted to order had sold out so I asked what the lady recommended and chose another dish instead. I also asked what vegan wines they had? The lady looked at me blankly for a minute and then said she didn't know. I was surprised and she didn't offer to check or ask someone else, she just stood there and said again that she didn't know. She was quite young so I thought maybe she was knew and thought I would ask someone else.
A while later another lady came to serve us and I asked her if any of their wines were vegan? She also looked at me blankly and I explained to her how wine is made with filtering agents which are often not vegan, and sometimes not even vegetarian. She said 'Oh no our wine wouldn't have any of those products'. I could tell she didn't really know thought so I asked if she was sure? She said she had never heard of vegan wine and would ask someone and see if they knew. The lady never came back to let us know.
I found it highly surprising that staff at a vegetarian restaurant don't know if their wine is vegetarian or vegan and it really put me off going there ever again. Not so much that they didn't know, but that they didn't bother to find out if anyone else knew or get back to me?
The food wasn't bad, the decor of the restaurant was lovely, but I would never return due to what I would consider bad service of staff.
Pros: Location, Decor, Food
Cons: Staff don't know of vegan wine, Poor service, Not much privacy at tables

Underwhelming - Edit
After reading so many positive reviews, I'd been expecting Maitrea to be a bit more special than it was. The interior was lovely, especially downstairs: quite a fancy restaurant. However, the tables were very close together, so we were essentially sitting with other people. I prefer more privacy, especially when you're paying in a nice place.
Read moreAnd truthfully I thought the menu was a little uninspired - there weren't many vegan options, and the udon noodles were basically just noodles, veg and some fried "duck", which I could have thrown together at home. I didn't feel like the price and the decor matched the food at all.
Pros: Great service
Cons: Not much privacy

Great find in Prague - Edit
We loved this restaurant. We ate there twice in the 4 days we were in Prague. The menu is creative, the food delicious. Not all vegan, but vegan choices clearly indicated. There are 2 distinct dining rooms. The one downstairs is the most attractive with a fountain and shell lamps. Food is the same in both. Reservations are recommended as it is a popular place.

Amazing - Edit
First, we were impressed about the lovely and complex furniture and decoration.
Read moreThey had many all-vegan meals and also a lot vegetarian ones, we could "veganize". We chose a curry with "chicken" pieces, which tasted really authentic and a pancake out of red beet filled with mushrooms and smoked tofu served with steamed carrots and potatoes.
The prices were really moderate. We payed all together 450, which was fair.
Also the service was great, so we just have positive stuff to tell you!
Pros: everything!

Unimpressed - Edit
We went here for lunch with myself, my husband and 2 year old daughter. We were surprised that only a couple options were vegan, but were happy that the menu is clearly labeled vegan, gluten free, etc.
Read moreWe ordered the beet pancake wich was okay, but I wouldn't get it again. My husband ordered the autumn vegetable yellow curry with faux shrimp, he was surprised to have a large plate of mostly potatoes with a few carrots. Our daughter got the kids vegan meal of millet with walnuts and prunes and it was great for her, although a little sweet. We asked for hers immidiately, as she was hungry when we arrived. It came quickly but we spent more than 5 minutes waiting to get the servers attention for a set of cutlery for her. 10 minutes later we had the same problem with our meals.
Overall the only thing we loved were the guacamole and hummus starters, and the fresh juices. It was busy, but service was exceptionally slow.
Roughly 30 euro for 2 starters, 2 meals, 2 juices and 2 deserts, plus a kids meal.
Pros: affordable, well labeled menu
Cons: poor service, practically no vegetables in curry, slow service

I'm here in Prague over Christmas and I went to Maitrea to try out their vegan food after seeing such good reviews here on Happy Cow. Me and my mum are both vegans and we loved it!! We both had the beet root pancake for main and it was super yummy and well made. The staff spoke good english and the menu is translated into english as well and says what's vegan and what can be made vegan etc, they even have a raw main!

Great Food, Great Price, Great Location - Edit
Went to Maitrea tonight, ordered a fresh juice, guacamole as a starter, a salad of coriander, udon noodles, peanuts, tofu, cherry tomatoes and a raw vegan chocolate tort for dessert. The food was delicious amd super fresh (esp the salad and cake) and the service was fast, despite it being busy. Its in a great location (just off Old Town Square) and the prices are not too expensive (I paid the equivalent of €13 for all that!). The only downside was my boyfriends "white chocolate mousse with caramel wafers and almonds." Although it sounds amazing, he said the white chocolate mousse was essentially just whipped cream. On the plus side, the restaurant has many vegan dishes, and all dishes are labelled according to of theyre gf, raw, contain nuts, garlic or any other common allergies/food preferences etc

A blossomy dream - Edit
We went to Maitrea on our first day in Prague and our first impression was - WoW! After entering the location we were led to the basemant, where our table was located. The whole restaurant has a unique interior design that includes a little fontain and custom made - well - everything. The line of design is led by organic forms, nature topics, blossoms as lights. We felt like in a fairy wonderland.

Worth a visit for the excellent goulash - Edit
Maitrea is busy for a reason: It does what it does well.
Read moreFor my taste, it offers the best goulash in town, with very flavorful gravy (unlike that of some of its competitors), though this meal is almost all starch. I wish they included a small side salad with it to make it a more balanced meal, though of course one can order that separately if there's room in both your belly and your budget.
I do wish there were a few more vegan options, as the goulash was really the only main dish that appealed to me.
The vegan cheesecake is scrumptious. The raw chocolate cake was also good — nutty and not too sweet, just as i like it. Fresh juices are a plus.
It took a while to get a table during the dinner rush, but then service was warm even then. Visiting in the off hours makes getting a table much easier.
Note that there's no wifi, and barely any mobile signal, so be prepared to unplug during your meal.
Pros: Best goulash in Prague, Nice atmosphere, Good vegan desserts.
Cons: Limited vegan options, Very busy at meal times

it's okay but not excellent - Edit
I ordered the Aloe Vera Juice (not good), the raw spinach soup (really not good!) and the Thai Eggplant Curry (was okay but too much sauce and coconut for my taste). I also thought it strange that they serve a limited menu at 16:30h! The waiter didn't come to our table that often and I had to go to the waiter myself to pay...It was okay but I wouldn't go there again.

Being a vegetarian or vegan is hard in Prague unless you find a place like Maitrea. Maitrea is one of those restaurants that immediately make you feel welcome and like you've come to right place. The menu is very diverse. It ranges from more traditional Czech dishes to international cuisine. We tried a vegetarian dish with dumplings and a vegan curry. Both were excellent! For dessert we had a delicious white chocolate mousse with caramel wafers. Drinks are tasty and different from what you're usually served, e.g. I loved my green iced tea with lemongrass.
