Disappointing - Edit
Just two veggie options on the menu - shepherd's pie and a wild mushroom stroganoff (both can be made vegan upon request). I had the stroganoff and it was completely flavourless, and served with undercooked rice.

Delicious food - Edit
I wasn't expecting to find many vegan options in Whitby, but was pleasantly surprised. The Magpie Café is a very popular place to eat, and I can see why. Minimal vegan options, but the options available are all inviting. I opted for the mushroom and butter bean stroganoff with rice. The portion was massive, and it was piping hot. It was maybe a touch on the expensive side at £17 but was more than worth it due to the portion size and taste. I was planning on trying the vegan sundae for dessert but was so full from the main that I couldn't manage it. Hopefully, I'll get chance to try it in the future as it sounds delicious.

Chips cooked with cheese 🤷🏻♀️ - Edit
Very popular place with some vegan options but for they really should have an option for chips in veg oil where cheese hasn’t been cooked too (I don’t get why they are frying cheese).

Chippy chips! - Edit
When in Whitby, I had to try some chips!
Read moreThis is more difficult than you think as most places cook their chips in beef dripping and some places didn't open until later in the week.
Managed to find Magpie offering 'vegetarian' chips cooked in oil instead. They also had a couple of options on the menu that were vegan or could be made vegan. But it had to be chips!
They also had a vegan sundae which I had as dessert whilst a single portion of chips wasn't the most filling of meals.

Good choice if with omnis - Edit
Pre going Vegetarian, Magpies was a family favourite in Whitby. The staff are very friendly, the restaurant has a cosy feel and has great views over Whitby. Upon reading the menu I was surprised to see a Vegetarian menu. This meant I was still able to go with family. The options are quite good but could have a little bit more choice, considering how big the menu is. One criticism is that all the chips are cooked in beef dripping which is a shame. It would be good if there was a Veggie/Vegan chip option.

Phish Phood - Edit
This place was originally on Happy Cow for a number of years, then removed and and now it’s back on again. It’s part of the Whitby seafood scene, extremely well established and a major destination for fish loving visitors to the town. So why is it on Happy Cow? Personally, I wouldn’t however like to go for a vegan meal here. The menu is extremely fish and shellfish heavy. Also, after popping in to their chip shop downstairs very recently I was informed they fry in beef dripping. Not really a good sign. Good independent place (if you’re into seafood) but not really somewhere you’d go as a vegan. I’m never ever comfortable eating in seafood orientated surroundings.

Very limited vegan food - Edit
Sadly, although this promised to have a reasonable vegan choice, in practice there were just two mains to choose from. The mushroom stroganov sounded promising, so I went with that. There was a good range of mushrooms in the dish and the rice was well cooked but that is as far as it went. The dish was woefully underseasoned and insipid. Also the sauce had curdled and looked most unappealing.. Some of the mushroom stalks were unpleasantly chewy and would have been far better used in making a stock. Sadly not an eatery I would return to.

Vegan shepherd's pie - Edit
Not a destination for vegans but good if you are with a group who wants to have fish. This is a fish and chip restaurant which has exactly one vegan option: The vegan shepherd's pie, which is basically a lentil dish with some baked potatoes on top. It tastes nice but is also a little expensive for what it is.
