Lovely, chilled seaside restaurant.

Although the restaurant serves non-vegan dishes there is an English menu so it's very easy to see what is vegan and what isn't. All of their desserts are vegan as a bonus, also.

Two out of the three members of staff spoke English well. The food came out after about 20 minutes and it was all delicious. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and although you aren't going to leave with a bursting stomach, you are going to have enjoyed a decent sized meal and you can just buy some onigiri down the road if you wish!

The desserts were really delicious- we tried the chocolate gelato (which although wasn't super chocolatey was really tasty) and the hemp cream pudding which reminded me of white chocolate! Both desserts were modest in size but satisfied a sweet tooth very well.

I would absolutely recommend this place.

Pros: Wonderful views and atmosphere, English menu/English speaking staff, Friendly staff

Excellent Beachside Experience

Some of the previous, unnecessarily persnickety reviews of this chill beachside cafe prompted me to get an account and finally start writing some of my own.

My boyfriend and I went to Magokoro yesterday after a morning at the beach, and it was everything we wanted it to be. Much of what they have is vegan or can be made so, the portions are NOT ridiculously tiny, and the food itself is very good. We had the curry (which was the better of the two) and taco rice sets, both of which also came with a few tasty sides. My personal favourites were the little cups of vichyssoise with hemp seeds and the homemade tabasco - not really tabasco, but an awesome kick of vinegar that immediately subsides into a gentle aftertaste - in a tiny earthenware jar on the table.

One of the kitchen staff members in particular spoke quite good English and was very friendly. After sitting down and ordering we were able to move to the bar facing the beach, and he was genuinely interested in making sure I selected a shochu I'd like and that it was served in a refreshing way (mixed with a little soda and ice, for example). I ended up getting one distilled from sweet potatoes with just a couple of ice cubes, and the Ebisu draft my boyfriend had was also very refreshing.

An artist named Oukubo Akiko is currently exhibiting a wide variety of works all around the cafe, and a few of the smaller ones are definitely affordable. She came in as we were about to leave and I chatted with her for a few minutes.

All in all this was a wonderfully pleasant experience, and the atmosphere was exactly right for a hippie cafe in a popular surfing town. It wouldn't kill them to have a couple more fans going, and while the prices are slightly high, considering how fresh the dishes are, how many of their components are homemade and/or local, and the fact that you're sitting on a piece of prime real estate, they are very reasonable. I'm looking forward to going back.

Pros: Unique, tasty dishes, Friendly staff, Great atmosphere

Cons: No air con

Could be better

It's a nice cozy place near the ocean and close to the giant Buddha. Very recommended if you simply want to relax after sigh-seeing in Kamakura (the only thing I missed was Wi-Fi). However, if you want to satisfy your hunger and not spend a fortune, I would recommend some other places. The food itself is nice and delicious (I tried bibimbap) but the portion is far from enough, especially considering that it costs 1200-1300 yen and includes no drinks or desserts. So, minus one star for that.

One more star is missing because the restaurant is not 100% vegan. Actually, there were only two vegan dishes that day. This could be improved.

On the positive note, Magokoro is English-friendly so you can go there even without knowing any words in Japanese. In contrast with other comments, the food was served in 10 minutes or so. There was no need to wait for a long time.

Pros: cozy, English menu, Good location

Cons: smallish portions, no wi-fi, not 100% vegan

Ridiculously small curry portion

The location is convenient and the place is quite cozy, but my curry portion was extremely small. In the photos it did look big, but all I received was something like three spoonfuls of curry, two spoonfuls of rice and a spoonful of cut vegetables. The plate looked half empty, more like a child's plate. Japan is known for small portions, but this was too extreme and felt like a real rip-off.

Pros: Nice atmosphere, Cozy, Staff can speak English

Cons: Not worth the price, Very small portions, They also serve fish

Friendly atmosphere, delicious vegan food!

I love this place; the vegan options are varied and delicious, the drinks amazing and the location just wonderful. The interior is very relaxing and has a chill vibe to it, I loved even the toilet decoration.

The staff is very attentive and fully understanding of vegan diet. The owner speaks both English and Spanish, and an English menu is available.

Highly recommemded! Oh, and do try their Hemp veggie burger set, it's amazing!

Pros: Location, Delicious food, Relaxing atmosphere

Cons: Not fully vegan

Amazing Vegan Lunch Set

I've visited this cafe twice for lunch and it's been excellent each time. The staff are really friendly and have an English menu (if you can't read the Japanese one). The decor has a relaxed feel and you can enjoy your lunch looking out over the beach.
Both times I've had the vegan lunch set and the dishes were completely different (except for the rice and salad) and so delicious!
I also indulged and tried the cakes, which seem to change regularly, and were also delicious.
A great place to stop and eat while enjoying the sites of Kamakura!

Pros: daily vegan lunch set, cakes, friendly staff

Cons: limited choice at lunch time

Lame for Dinner

This place is a great hang out spot or place to enjoy some drinks and company. It has a nice vibe and view of the ocean. The drinks are fresh and delicious. However, it is not a good dinner location. While the food is tasty and uses the freshest ingredients, the kitchen is just not equipped to serve a party of 4 or more. They brought out each of our dishes individually instead of all at once and my dad and boyfriend were starving by the time they got theirs. I had a salad, which came out first and I was probably finished for 45 minutes by the time the last person got their food. The bathroom was small and difficult to change my baby.

Also, this restaurant is lacto-pescatarian.

Pros: fresh, tasty, friendly

Cons: wait, small bathroom

Funky little cafe by the beach

This little place is a great place to chill on a nice day, staring off into the blue yonder of the sea. The menu is simple and macrobiotically minded - modest plates of curry etc and a selection of desserts, which are often really good (they're always different so it can be a bit of a lottery but they're never bad). Love the interior design - has a strong hippy vibe but not offputtingly so. I think they have the balance right. They also sell books and miscelleneous foods, many of them related to hemp and 60's alternative culture. All in all, a good rest stop if you're in the area. My favourite thing on the menu is the hemp chai, which comes in a warming Japanese tea-style earthen cup and goes perfectly with a slice of whatever vegan cake is on the menu for the day.

Pros: Ocean views, Chilled vibe, Great drinks and desserts
