Expensive and taste doesn't make up for it

I like that this was the first veggie place on the island that's really good, but there are quite a few others now and this one hasn't kept up. The food is 50% more expensive than similar places (it's almost London prices) and you don't get much to show for it. The menu is really small which is OK if the choice is good but it isn't really. All the meals seem to involve the corn bread which was forgettable and their salad. The houmous I got was really not good at all, acidic flavour and not much else. It cost me 310 baht (£8 ish) for toast, houmous, salad and some pesto (all Vegan) and a black coffee. You do get a lot of food which is good but everywhere we've been on Koh Lanta so far we seem to get huge portions (maybe because it's low season). I was really disappointed because of how much we paid I expected more, I prefered the Kaya veggie/vegan place up the road.
They also have no wifi and make a point that you should speak to people rather than check your phones, well how about you let us decide seen as we're paying almost 3 times as much here for a meal than other places ;).
I should say one positive thing, we both like the salad!

Pros: Nice atmosphere in secluded seating area, Local owners and workers, Big portion

Cons: Super expensive, Food was average, Arrogant comments on menu for what reason?

99% of our guests understand comedy. We dont expect everyone to laugh..... Kunda is not your ordinary cafe. Yes we dont serve tofu or rice or soybeans. We dont own a microwave. No smoking or drinking on the premise either. We choose to have a great chef serving 100% vegetables in a meat free environment. Our Chef is 16 years VEGETARIAN. Unlike any other on the island. It's all 100% daily fresh and home crafted. Not from a can or bakery. We make food not serve products on a plate. We DO NOT USE CORN FLOUR OR CORN BREAD.
We warm our daily bread, sometimes tumeric bread, we do not serve toast. In fact all our recipes are in the globally available cook book. Already 2000 copies sold. Yes we are expensive if 8 euro for a Chef prepared meal in a unique garden setting on a distant tropical is considered expensive? We support the newer restaurants that cater to back packers and budget travellers. Thanks for your visit. Big love from all of us at KUNDA VEGAN VEGETARIAN CAFE serving MEAT FREE since 2011

Please try to take criticism on board instead of patronising people just because you don't agree with them. This makes you look like a fool more than them. You responded to my last comment with "we don't force feed customers" even though I said nothing about the portion size. Even though both me and the last review have tried to be constructive with our criticism. You obviously can't handle your over inflated ego being damaged, and you've put it on the internet for all to see. Well done!

We are a humble local restaurant. We get out of bed to cook fresh food for wonderful guests ...... We don't try to be anything else. God bless.

You're not humble, you're patronising and rude. I eat a lot of vegan food and I'm afraid yours isn't up to scratch, it's obvious from the comments on here. You haven't got a monopoly on the island anymore and people will see your comments and choose to go to Kaya or Happy Veggie instead. You should be more careful with your business.

Its easy... We cook great food for wonderful people........ that's just what we do.
People have a choice to choose from a great selection of restaurants on koh lanta. Thanks for your ...um...positive vibes. We do what we do.. We make daily fresh food..... provide great food for wonderful people and steady jobs and security all year long for our staff. Since 2011 we offer a unique service. Deliciously different. Did you know we are a concept restaurant?
A very confident group of happy people waking up to make great food. If replying and being honest seems rude. Hey. I'd rather be cooking and chatting with guests...... you expressed your opinion. We have ours.... that's all. P.S. We get outta bed to try and do good for others. No smoking no drinking no processed foods........ We even have no WiFi to concentrate on guests and cooking. But we still take time to answer so called constructive comments. Both restaurants you mentioned are friends, and both are old Kunda customers. We all live here and get along. It's island life. We all support each other. We all do different things......... there isn't any competition on an island, unsure how there's a monopoly. . . ? We choose to just cook meat free Because we are all vegan vegetarian staff.

A little disappointing

Really nice chilled out atmosphere. But the menu was a little limited, the hummus was over acidic. Drinks also came with a plastic straw which I was surprised about because Ko Lanta seems so progressive about pollution compared to the rest of Thailand and the first vegan/vegetarian restaurant should be sending out a stronger environmental message.

Kunda Cafe

30 Jul 2018

The KUNDA MENU does mention PLEASE SPEAK UP, so if you have special requirements eg. No STRAW, please just inform our staff or manager. We have trialed many eco-straws over the past seasons and many run out of supplies. As a humble little café, we do our best to serve great food for great people. We encourage everyone to SPEAK UP on the day and make their own choices. Thank you for your visit and sorry to disappoint a little.

TFLstrong87

30 Jul 2018

Please consider serving drinks with no straws. Many of your customers are ecologically minded and would rather receive no straw. The number of times in Thailand we asked for no sugar, no ice, and no straw and in the confusion of asking too many things in a second language they put a straw in anyway. I don't understand why if you see it as a problem you would still create a demand for plastic. Customers will still come back if you make them drink from the glass. I understand that in Thailand the straw has become part of the culture of drinking but if people ask why not take that opportunity to educate the public to the damage plastic is doing to the oceans and the planet.

Kunda Cafe

21 Aug 2018

We have CORN FLOUR straws at all our locations, we run out due to popularity. We are the first on Koh Lanta to introduce these. We started trial in our Chiang Rai cooking school. Again.... it's up to our guests to SPEAK UP on the day. We certainly don't force feed people. Thanks for your encouragement.

Really outstanding service!

If you're travelling through Thailand, you usually can't expect an outstanding friendly service in most restaurants. But different here! The waitress is really friendly and always has a smile on the lips and is very courteous (serving you a cold limonade while you're waiting for your on-the-go order.
An the woman who is running the eatery is very helpful and friendly as well! We've been there several times and she always fullfilled our wishes. Besides that, she gave us some goodies on our way as we leaved, really caring! That's what I call service and customer loyalty.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the dishes itself; what else can you expect from such a great service as they wouldn't taste great. And so they do! Try the Vegan Schmeegan (I think it's written like this) for example, just that yummy! And they have the best vegan gluten-free dessert (chocolate cookie cake) I've had in Thailand!

awesome food

Loved the food so much, it’s very creative and different and they also catered for my special dietary needs. Yes it’s not cheap but it’s worth it... the chocolate cake is to die for!
Also cute shop and seating area in the back...

lecker uns teuer

Tolles Personal, leckeres Essen jedoch sehr teuer.

Cons: teuer

Cozy but pricey

I loved atmosphere at the restaurant. Some pieces of my dish tasted great and some was unbeatable... they have interesting spices, not for everyone I would say.

Pros: Atmosphere , Big portions

Cons: Pricey , Small variety of dishes

If you want to sit and relax its the right place with friendly laid back owners, lots of books, and great smoothies/shakes/juices. If you order food you will never leave hungry! Huge servings of comfort food like pasta, hot sandwiches, and burgers!

Bit Disappointing

The little cafe on the back is just gorgeous, however I see no explanation to justify the prices they apply. The environment is beautiful and relaxed but there is no reason to cost so much even because the service is not the most friendly. The food is ok, nothing so great.

Pros: Beautiful set up.

Cons: High Price

Daily fresh, home made 'everything', breads, dips, sauces, yoghurt, white cheese, bread, cakes, crepes, burgers, patties, etc...etc.... FRESH DAILY. ...nothing frozen or from a can, no tofu, no plastic plates, all sourced and served in a zen atmosphere. We are still cheaper than a pizza or a big mac....? Our most expensive meal is 350 thai baht....... the KUNDA SPECIAL. Others start from 120 baht..... we aint 7-11, we are a restaurant with a long history of happy customers. Good food aint cheap and cheap food aint good. Thanks for your comments. We value peoples perpectives and budgets.

Hit the spot!

This place is very ecclectic and charming. The food portions are huge and can easily be shared family style or turn into two meals for one person. So, contrary to other reviews, the price is a bit higher but you get what you pay for: a lot of beautiful and delicious food! The chocolate cake is so good...and it's vegan and gluten free! It is a must try! They are making a new menu currently and I can only assume the new dishes will be just as incredible!

Pros: Atmosphere, accomodates multiple dietary needs, la

So-so?

I came for lunch and was scared off by the prices unfortunately. If I was in my local place of residence, sure I'd pay those prices, but not while I'm traveling and trying to get value for money so I can afford to travel for longer.

I got a soy chai latte and chocolate cake. The drink was great, the cake was not. It wasn't a cake texture by any means, I feel bad for saying it, but it was like a failed brownie. Wouldn't recommend it.

I'd say give this place a go if you have time and a few extra baht to spend. If not, don't stress.

Pros: Nice decore

Cons: Expensive , Foods not quality , No wifi

Some customers are so-so. We serve value and people get what they pay for, hand made, daily fresh, home cooked western style gourmet cuisine. We are not a cheap thai stall, we are a garden restaurant since 2011. .
We might be expensive for you but our highest price meal 'The kunda special' is only 350 baht. . Our meals start at 120 baht. This is not 7-11.
As we win great praise for our cake, we cant take your post seriously.....especially that you posted it three times...odd...we also advertise NO WIFI. What ever..... we cant make everyone happy, we concentrate on quality food for quality people.

Poor Service, Bland Food

Perhaps we had big expectations of Kunda, but my wife and I were not impressed. The place was very busy and we couldn't get a seat when we walked in. When we tried to walk into the seating area in the back, a cook/owner stopped my wife right away to tell us the place is full. She asked how long it may be to get a seat and she replied "I'm not kicking anyone out". If people have ordered their food and are eating, the wait time would not be too long. It was just an inquiry, as we don't mind waiting. So we sat and waited about 15 minutes and decided to order for takeaway as our hotel was only 2 minutes away. We ordered 2 of the same dish (vegan supreme I believe). It was a slice of veggie loaf with some veggies on it, plus a small salad. For 200 Baht, each. Expensive. Very bland tasting food. It had little to no flavour. I agreed with my wife when she described it as tasting as airplane food. We figured this restaurant would be somewhere we'd be coming back to. I don't mind paying a little extra for food if the food is good. But clearly our dish wasn't.

Kunda Cafe

01 Apr 2017

We have 100% hand made meals, daily fresh full of herbs, spices and coconut oil and always busy in high season. Kunda isnt for everyone, and if the restaurant was full the owner has the right to stop you from loitering. So you had to wait. . . Try 7-11, they are cheaper and faster.

DavidJanuszkiewicz

06 Apr 2017

Based on that response from kunda cafe, I'll be advising people not to come. Insulting a customer isn't a smart move!

Kunda Cafe

12 Apr 2017

Hey we are honest. We have always remained so, since 2011. We are not for everyone. Never said we were. Our menu also states our 'sarcastic' terms of the kunda concept restaurant......try to read next time ...and David if you cant afford to travel, dont complain, if you got nothing nice to say, why open your mouth. We are a happy team making hundreds of people happy each week...... with great home cooked 100% original vegetarian cuisine....... no meat cooked on location.

mikewinnemuller

27 Nov 2017

Wow. I just noticed the responses almost a year after being there. So rude. Loitering? We were being ignored when we arrived at the restaurant as we wanted to eat there, hence why my wife started to walk into the back to make them aware that we were waiting, before the rude comment came from the owner. We should have known better and just walked away and chose somewhere else to eat. There were much better vegetarian restaurants in the area, and with extremely friendly owners, unlike Kunda. "Try 7-11"??? How old are you? Seriously. And then to call out David and say "if you can't afford to travel"??? David caught on to the rudeness and called you out on it. Seriously Kunda, grow up.

Good food, bad service and small choice

After eating in non-veg restaurants and struggling with many problems I was really looking forward to eat in this place. First disappointment - just a few tables and there was no place to seat, second disappointment - there was nothing to order for dinner! Menu - 4 small pages - contains drinks and desserts and salads, but not too much for lunch or dinner. Finally, we ordered 2 crepes with vegetables and salad, which tasted really good, but the waitress didn't understand our order and after more than half an hour of waiting we've got only one meal, although we order two... We shared this one meal and went to the other restaurants for proper dinner.
Updated from previous review on Sunday February 28, 2016

Pros: vegetarian, tasty food, especially fresh salad, nice place

Cons: expensive, waitress didn't understand our order, very small choice of main courses

Kunda Cafe

12 Apr 2016

Sorry we have few tables and a small menu, but we try and keep it small and intimate as its all home made fresh food. We do always have DAILY SPECIALS that are HUGE, most people order this as a Main meal...and still require take away to finish it...and we have removed our staff that had caused issues. We appreciate all response. Hope you come and visit next time, you can reserve a table if you let us know early enough. As its all hand made cuisine and its a tropical island in the middle of the Andaman sea with people on relaxed holidays... a slight wait can be expected...especially if the tables are full. That's part of slowing down....and enjoying the island speed.....and understanding the speed of the island. some people call it the island charm.....

kunda.

food: pretty good. lots of flavor and portion size was large. i could have easily split the carrot salad with someone and been full. the shakes were delicious.
price: expensive. even higher than restaurants in bangkok.
atmosphere: back garden is lovely. very relaxed. too bad i couldn't enjoy it.
additional notes: ugh. smokers everywhere. it bothers me that restaurants promote healthy mind, body and food, but allow smoking. this totally put us off to the point we got up from sitting in the back garden to sitting in the front of the shop where it was super noisy. it faces the road. also, do not go if you're in a hurry. everything is made fresh and there are only 2 people working.

Pros: delicious, most things can be made vegan

Cons: smokers, expensive

Kunda Cafe

20 Apr 2017

We have no smoking signs, just point the offenders to the signs. It is an outdoor garden restaurant, some people have smoking habits. Our prices are clearly stated on the menu out front. For hand made euro styled gourmet cuisine we are very reasonable in price, cheaper than a pizza, cheaper than a mcdonalds meal, our highest meal is 350 baht. Where do you eat in Bangkok? Yes, we are on a road, the only road on a tropical island in the andaman sea, its not really that busy as its a small island. Locals on bikes and some tourists. Sorry you had a bad day and have issues with others that dont conform to your standards. We certainly cant please everyone. But we can continue to make great food for great people. Maybe try again and personally tell them nasty ol' smokers off, we are quite busy cooking and cant see everything, thats what our CCTV does. Thanks for coming, hope your next visit brings a big smile.

Je t'adore

This is a wonderful place. The atmosphere is super relaxed and you could while away many hours on the comfy patio. The real star is the food though, there are plenty of vegan options including the most amazing garlicky carrot salad. The pasta pesto was another fave and if the owner Lena is in the house get her to go off-menu and make you a mango shake with fresh sweet basil it'll knock your socks off.
