Meatballs!

I had the best spaghetti and vegan meatballs. Mmm had this for an anniversary lunch and my husband and I loved it! Great marinara too.

Impossible Reuben + more

Chef Galice Ryan knows what he's doing with these vegan options at H&L. It's not a vegan place by any means, but the food is great, the vibe is spot on for date night, and the craft cocktails never miss.

The Impossible Reuben is terrific, but there's also consistent vegan options on the rotation, including stellar offerings that change seasonally.

Don't miss what they put out for either Dine Downtown (every January) or during the Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge (every October). #Veganuary

The Impossible Reuben!

The Impossible Reuben is one of the best vegan creations that I've ever had during 5 years of vegan life.

Consistent and welcoming

This is where I bring mixed groups for a casual night out. The food is a crowd pleaser for vegans and non. There are appealing and well executed vegan options throughout the day in apps, main dishes, pizza, and drinks. A full bar and Non alcoholic drinks menu too.

Pros: Always several real vegan options.

Vegan friendly place with lackluster food

They are vegan friendly. However, I got a salad and pizza and both were bitter and not very good. Would not recommend. Also very pricey.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Expensive, Food not very good

Roasted cauliflower

They had this roasted cauliflower on one of their recent seasonal menus. I never wanted the dish to end. Also have a wonderful time with their drinks!

The menu changed

The menu has changed from what was previously posted. Vibe was super cool. Would be a great place for just drinks. Food was mediocre. Was under salted and needed help.

Nice restaurant that has a limited, but fully vegan menu

The restaurant is very nice inside and has great ambiance. They have a small vegan menu. We had the impossible burger and some potatoes, and a couple of signature cocktails. All were excellent.

Pros: Limited, but fully vegan menu, Really interesting and unique cocktails, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Kind of expensive , Would like more vegan options

Yummy!

We went during their happy hour (from 2:30-6 daily) and they didn’t have their full menu during that time but they had drinks and a few vegan options for food. I got the chickpea fritter and it was super yummy, came with a tasty sauce. The bartender was very nice and helped me know which things were or could be made vegan.

Great place with vegan menu

This is my go-to place in Sac for the Impossible Burger. I go here literally every time I'm in town. It is the best Impossible Burger I've found. I recommend the side of salad as the French fries are just ok and the salad is pretty good. They also have a vegan menu with other amazing options like Chickpea fritters. I would give five stars if Happy Cow allowed it.

The Impossible Burger!

As noted in other reviews, they actually bring the vegan menu automatically to every table. Although the menu isn't large, it has some interesting offerings. I had the Impossible burger, and it tasted very much like I remember meat tasting!

Atmosphere is casual, and decor is eclectic. They seemed to have dropped the mac and cheese from the menu, probably too much negative feedback. A little on the pricey side, but very nice. Also good for my carnivore husband!

Pros: Nice vegan selections

Wanted to like it

Since Sacramento has no real comfort food vegan restaurants, I was very excited to go to Hook and Ladder. I had heard about their vegan Mac n cheese, plus their vegan menu. So I went there, and I noticed they did have a vegan menu that they placed down without even asking for it. In summary, I was disappointed. First of all, their beer list was not the same as their website listed. Ok, that’s a personal gripe. Websites should be up to date. And the website listed one of my all time favorites, but they didn’t have it. On to the food. Wife and I had the macaroni and cheese and the spaghetti squash. The spaghetti squash was good and flavorful, but swimming in oil. I don’t understand why chefs substitute excessive oil when they can’t use animal products. As for the macaroni and cheese: It was not good. In fact, it was bad. A box of the vegan stuff from the grocery store would’ve been better. The pasta was undercooked. Al dente is one thing, tough and chewy is another. And the cheese? None at all. It was swimming in a yellow sauce that tasted like watered down hollandaise. There was no cheese taste to speak of. While I applaud them for having a vegan menu, they still have a very long way to go in terms of actually cooking edible vegan food.

separate vegan menu

Food was nice vegan menu changes often. I ordered falafel wrap, garlic fries(fresh garlic and a garlic oil drizzle) and vegan "mac and cheese" that was the only thing I didn't enjoy as it didn't have a lot of flavour. Really nice atmosphere and separate vegan menu so made ordering so much easier.

Pros: vegan menu, nice atmosphere
