The best market on the Peninsula

The Homer Farmer's Market is the local and tourist go-to event on Saturdays during the summer. It can be overcrowded and produce may sell out early toward the beginning of the season. Between Saturdays and the smaller Wednesday market at the same location I complete most of my food shopping during the season. Simply Fresh Salsa made in Homer is the best I've ever had, and twice a week during the summer we have incredible baked sweet and savory treats from a vegan bakers. The vegan baking vendors have breads, cookies, cupcakes, cakes, danish, cinnamon rolls, piroshki, vegan Kimchi (other vendors use shrimp and fish sauce), as well as the best sauerkraut and fermented pickles I've found in the area. During the growing season there is a wide variety of produce- greens, mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, celery, herbs, root vegetables, and occasionally berries and apples. Kombucha, coffee, jams, jellies, chocolate, herbs, and personal care products may also be available at the Saturday market. Most produce vendors, the salsa vendor, and the vegan baking vendor sell on both Saturday and Wednesday, other specialty vendors may not sell on Wednesday. The Wednesday market is usually much less crowded than the Saturday market.

vegan baked goods!

we visited in late July 2019, and addition to a bag full of lacinato kale, scapes, massive broccoli, and two containers from the salsa vendor (go for the extra heat! heat is on a different scale in alaska, yo), my wife and I also tried a cinnamon roll from one of THREE vegan bakery booths. super sweet and soft-bread-y, in a pleasant way.

excellent pourover coffee booth!

it was also really cool to see so many local folks catching up.

fyi, vida thai has a truck, and it apparently has vegan option in town, but we didn't get to see if they bring something to the market that's suitable...

Pros: giant summer veggies!, good vibes, vegan baked goods

Cons: well, it rained, but it is alaska!, summer only...but it is alaska!
