Amazing place to eat fabulous original vegan food. Small and friendly. - Edit
Only a few days staying in Edinburgh but visited here twice as it was so good. Lots of vegan choices in town but was recommended Henderson’s and we were not disappointed. Fabulous food and drinks and very very friendly. Be back next year for sure 💚

Sweet place with friendly staff and good coffee! We had the vegan breakfast and it was lovely but nothing super special. The lunch options looked amazing though as did the cakes.

Taking over the city! - Edit
This place is pretty cool. It basically is a little vegan/veggie village at the corner of a street. Taking it over! Spread the vegan love! They have loads of vegan options (almost everything) but everything is well marked. We love their cafeteria style restaurant downstairs the best especially at night when they play live music. They also serve delicious wine! This neighbourhood corner also has a cozy Henderson's café/coffee shop and a more upscale restaurant upstairs. We prefer the casual setting downstairs!
Read morePros: VERY VERY VEGAN friendly, loads of delicious desserts, cozy atmosphere
Cons: Customer service is average in the cafeteria.

Glad it’s there but could be better - Edit
It’s been going for years. Has a main veggie canteen service restaurant below, small cafe with takeaway above and a small vegan restaurant around the corner. Below has the most seating but it really needs to update menu very 1980s. Had the haggis with mashed potato and gravy but no green vegetables offered so brown and biege luke warm meal. Needs to update and capitalise on new interest in vegan food. Great selection of vegan flapjacks and cakes in cafe upstairs though which feels a bit more with the times offering seitan to take away etc
Read morePros: Always find a place to sit downstairs , Good fall back option, Great cakes and biscuits

Lovely staff. - Edit
Staff were lovely & they were happy to let me order food to take out as I needed to get a train. Tried the Babaganosh, I wasn't too keen on this dish & it did cost alot for the position size, but I will definitely be back in the future to try something else.

Uninspiring and over-priced - Edit
This used to be a wonderful place. Now it has lost its identity. They don't seem to know what sort of setup to have. The table service doesn't work. Bring back counter service, live piano music and Auntie Linda.

So cool to go to a veg restaurant that has been around for a while! Staff are friendly, helpful, and have a crazy sense of humor. Yay!
Read moreLots of gluten-free options, though sadly the haggis entree is not GF. (If you guys are reading, please come up with a GF version!) Lots of vegan options for appetizers, mains, salads, and desserts.
GF raw cake and GF brownie were both excellent. Desserts are small, but portions for mains are large and very filling.
So cool that there was a live guitar player!
Pros: Gluten-free options, Vegan options, Live music at night!
Cons: Food came SLOWLY for takeaway

Not a great experience - Edit
My 1st stop on a ‘vegan tour’ of Edinburgh. Had seen a few reviews and it looked promising. The waiter was really friendly and I asked him for a recommendation. Asked about a few things but they weren’t vegan, as the restaurant is vegetarian also so at his recommendation I went with the Haggis and had the goats cheese and asparagus to start. The goats cheese was really nice, I asked what they substituted the goat cheese with and he told me it was actual goat cheese! He looked really worried but I understand these things happen. The vegan haggis looked awful and tasted like bland shepherds pie. I watched other people served beautiful looking meals and attempted to get through mine. One more attempt I asked for a recommendation for dessert to go. He raves about the carrot cake and in that case he was spot on, it was really nice. I also got a slice of chocolate cake for the following day but threw it out because it was so dry. I think they can do better and probably usually do. Other reviewers had better experiences I’m assuming I free the short straw that day.

many vegan options, try the haggis! - Edit
Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu, as are vegetarian and gluten-free options. I tried the vegan haggis, it was delicious! Portions are large. Cosy interior, there was a live band playing when we ate there. Service was also very fast and friendly. Fair price for what you get.

Great vegan haggis - Edit
I’m a bit confused about what happened - we tried to go to the other Henderson’s (I think the fully vegan one) but they were full. So instead got directed to this one - I’m unsure if menu is same or different. I seem to remember there were a couple of vegetarian things on menu but was mostly vegan..

Really good! - Edit
Our service was amazing. We both ordered linguine, which was lovely (though a slightly small portion, but I am a big eater 😂), completely inspired me to make it myself! I also had the chocolate mousse for dessert, which was sooo good, really melt in the mouth. The only reason I'm deducting a star is it wasn't the best vegan food I've ever had, or even that close, but it was really lovely, and worth the price in my opinion.

Wholesome and satisfying Scottish food - Edit
The menu options included vegan/ vegetarian versions of typical Scottish dishes. The servings were ample and the salads delicious (although the price can add up at 2.50 a scoop). The mac n cheese lacked a little seasoning but nothing a sprinkling of salt and pepper couldn't fix. The downstairs area had a cosy feel and the vegan potato salad was to die for. Open on Tuesdays too, when many other places are closed.

Nice haggis - Edit
I was actually trying to find the vegan restaurant and the staff at the shop directed me here so... I was disappointed to find that not everything was vegan but that's okay... I'll blame the mix up.

disappointing lunch - Edit
We were very excited to visit this restaurant as a number of people recommended it to us. We went at lunchtime, when there is no table service, and we waited with our trays at the counter to order. Each day they offer a selection of cold salads as well as maybe two hot entrees and a baked potato with a couple of different toppings, as well as a couple of soup choices. Offerings included a lentil lasagna, quinoa salad, coleslaw, chickpea salad, hummus, tossed salad with dressing, tabouleh, etc. The restaurant has a nice, homey decor.
Read moreI really appreciate vegetarian restaurants, especially when travelling with my family in a country like Scotland, where there were so few choices. So I am sorry to report the food was mediocre, even disappointing. The baked potatoes were horrible--wet and gummy and odd-tasting. The salads were dull and soggy and sometimes swimming in flavorless mayo dressings. My son enjoyed his lentil lasagna, but other than that, no one particularly liked their food. Even the dessert was left over. It was not cheap, and it should have been better. I get the distinct impression this place is coasting on its storied reputation.

Nice Environment - Edit
Downstairs restaurant has nice feel on Saturday night. Vegan options were good but nothing special. The price was expensive relative to flavour / enjoyment of food but we only went the once. We could choose other options on another occasion. My partner enjoyed hers though.

Cozy but expensive - Edit
I much prefer their bistro around the corner, but as we were in a large group the restaurant suited us better. I've rarely been super impressed by the restaurant, my experience has always been at satisfactory, much like tonight.
Read moreAlmost £13 for Pad Thai, which was quite tasty, but at mostly spiralised carrots, I didn't feel was particularly good value. I wasn't that inspired by the desserts either - lots of fruit. I was a bit suspicious of the chocolate cake being gluten free, but once I had asked for soya cream (that should have been pro-offered in my opinion as it was mentioned on the menu that all desserts came with cream options) it was far less dry.
Atmosphere and lighting were quite nice and the live music wasn't too loud to be distracting as we were chatting.
Pros: Nice room
Cons: Expensive for what you get, Vegan dessert options a bit dull

Nice Lunch - Edit
Came here for lunch and was a bit confused with the two restaurants next to each other, and were then confused with the salad bar and the menu and stuff (still not sure how that all works) but I got a spicy bean burger w/ wedges which was very yummy, looked small but was very filling, and then had the chocolate nutty cake which was delicious!

Food looked lovely but pretty bland. - Edit
Not been here for some years, went for Valentines day with husband and daughter. I had cauliflower wings to start with - quite plain and could have done with more of the sauce. Main course was hassleback aubergine with mushroom sauce - again, the sauce was nice but the aubergine was bland. Dessert was blackberry pie, which I think was my favourite part, despite the wholewheat pastry which was fairly solid. Overall nothing that made me think, Wow, though daughter did say her carrot cake was very good. There was live music, which was fine but quite loud and not ideal for conversation.

Great food! - Edit
There is a lot of vegan options and it was hard to to decide what to get. In the end I had 2 salads - the quinoa veg one with vegan mayo and the beet and carrot one and I also had the chickpea and aubergine curry with brown rice. I also had the choclate nut cake which was delicious. All the food was amazing and I was stuffed after. It's a cute small restoraunt and the staff is very friendly and the service was fast.

Great vegan restaurant! - Edit
Located in Edinburgh's New Town, Henderson's restaurant offers a big variety of vegan dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Read moreWe were here for lunch and among others, tried the vegan version of the Scottish Haggies. My friend had the Tofu Teriyaki. Both were awesome!
The staff was always very friendly and answered our questions.
