Hidden gem! - Edit
This place is so delicious. Usually I just go and ask for whatever the heck they want to make me and it’s always delicious. The mixed gluten you can get there is DELISH!

I've eaten from Happy Veggie House at least 10 times now. Every single time the quality is amazing and the portions are huge. This is hands down my go to in Calgary for comfort food.

Always Great Food and Friendly Service - Edit
The food at Happy Veggie is always amazing. I don't think I have had anything there that I don't like and the selection is huge. My favorite is the eel, gluten platter (which is massive and can easily be a meal on its own), and pineapple fried rice. The owner is super friendly and always very accommodating. The value is also really good especially considering the price of other Chinese veggie options in Calgary.

Inventive veggie options - Edit
Got this as take out given the current pandemic situation. we got the mock ginger beef made from taro root. Really enjoyed it. Probably tastier in house as it would be more crispy. Also got a few other dishes. Thought the mock meat was okay but I'm not really into mock meat as I prefer vegetables instead. My boyfriend really liked it all though. Cant wait to visit in person.

Super delicious Chinese food - Edit
We got Shanghai Noodles, Ginger "Beef" on rice, and the stuff tofu roll. It was all super delicious and satisfied my craving for Chinese food - it really tasted identical to what I remember omni Chinese food tasting like. The service was also really fast, and the person knew exactly what was vegan and what wasn't. To my knowledge, pretty much everything on the menu is vegan, with the exception of some noodles, which they can swap out.

A little gem of a place.. - Edit
It’s the kind of place you stumble upon by accident but then keep coming back. Okay, so it’s a food-court style of setting but it’s a cosy-enough quiet corner of a quiet ‘food mall’ in Chinatown. Once you get over the decor, the owners are friendly and thoughtful, sure to ask if you’re vegetarian or vegan and pleased to accommodate you. There’s buffet style if you’re in a rush or some house specialties if you have time. Vegan versions of Chinese favourites - flavourful and honest Chinese comfort food. No ‘fusion-style’ dishes, just straight and simple.
Read morePros: Veg or vegan, your choice , Inexpensive and good portion sizes, Friendly service
Cons: Basic food hall setting, but in a quiet corner, Good if you want vegan versions of Chinese dishes

Good value, 30 min wait. - Edit
Good food with great value compared to its price.
Read moreBut, by the time we arrived, they had ~9 guests divided over 3 tables who was already eating. Still took the restaurant 30 minutes to prepare 2 standard dishes.
Compared to how easy it supposedly should’ve been, i think i took too long.
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Long wait time

My Favorite Spot - Edit
I've been going to this veggie gem for years. Tucked in an unassuming Asian food court, it's easy to miss, but it's well worth seeking out! One of only two places in town (to my knowledge) which serves Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. Try the mixed gluten or any of the chow meins - they're consistently very good.

Seems like a hole in the wall, but honestly the best vegan/vegetarian asian food I think I have ever tried. It tasted so legit and the flavours were honestly spot on. Not to mention the owners are so kind!!! Definitely recommend anyone trying this!!

Amazing - Edit
The food was absolutely amazing. Incredibly friendly staff, our server was super knowledgeable and made sure to check if the wonton wrappers had egg. Unfortunately they had egg but she recommended the dumplings instead and they were amazing. Would highly recommend the Shanghai noodles and ginger beef. The place was a bit tricky to find and at first it’s unclear whether you order at the counter or sit down, but the lady told us to sit down and someone would be with us right away. We also weren’t sure if we were supposed to clear our own plates at the end. Fast service and amazing food in the end.

Tasty, quick and helpful - Edit
The service was friendly, helpful and quick. I ordered the E. 7. Veggie Ginger Beef and rice, and it was tasty, crispy, with a delicately balanced spicy smooth texture, controlled by the rice. I thoroughly enjoyed the dish. When I arrived and was looking at the menu, a customer identified as a regular and advised everything is good. It is a bit hard to find, I looked on the street but it is off the street in a small mall.

delicious! - Edit
This was a great value meal with great flavours. We couldn’t chose so ordered three mains. This was a lot of food for two people but we ploughed through 2.5 dishes as it was too good to waste! We tried the sweet & sour ‘pork’, which had a great texture and wasn’t too sweet, the tofu and eggplant chow Mein. This had amazing crispy noodles and was the favourite. We also had the ‘beef’ satay- an unusual sauce but also very nice. All had loads of lovely vegetables so it felt healthy. I assume these dishes were vegan as no sign of egg or dairy- but I have to admit I didn’t check.

my fave - Edit
I really like this place, every time I come to Calgary I end up staying somewhere close to Chinatown and come here for lunch often. Simple, cheap and good Chinese vegan food, I like how it is not too greasy and not too salty. Advise your server that you don't want eggs and they will tell you what to choose.

I went there again and there food was amazing and well priced. I didn't remember they took only cash. Also the location can be a bit hard to find if you don't know where you are looking as they are not very well marked. The staff was very friendly, though not fluent in Enlgish, but very helpful and eager to please.
Pros: Great food, Fast, Kind Staff
Cons: Lacking ambiance, Only cash, Could be hard to find

Vegan Chinese Food - Great For Lunch! - Edit
This place closed down late last year, but I'm happy to see that it's now open again as of March 2014. They have re-branded but it appears to be more or less the same place it was.
Read moreThey have a large menu, but I mostly go for lunch where they offer a daily selection of mock meats (sweet and sour, BBQ, etc.) and a few Chinese style dishes. You can order 1, 2, or 3 items with rice. You can eat for under $10 the quality is acceptable for the price.
Note: you can also get a vegetarian bibimbap from the Korean restaurant in the same food court. Sometimes this place is randomly closed when I go, so I get Korean instead.

Classic veggie house delights are back! - Edit
I was so happy to see a vegetarian restaurant open up in this long time veg restaurant space, and it turns out its the previous owners of old school calgary favourite Veggie House. The menu is huge with over 120 items and they have 5 flavours of gluten (sweet/sour, bbq pork, curry...). I have tried a fair amount of things, my favourites being the taro root rolls, bean curd rolls, vegetarian meat fried shanghai noodles (they have great wok hay here!) and the noodle soups which are soup versions of some of the popular stirfry dishes, so satay veggie beef and the veggie house noodle soup in lovely broth with shanghai/udon noodles. I love the dishes with yuba, fungus, shiitakes! great chili oil!
Read moreThe fried rice contains egg but can be easily left out. They have egg-free chow mein noodles on order so make sure to ask after them if required.
It is located in a food court setting but it has full table service.
Pros: affordable, good portion sizes, great wok hay, very tasty, friendly staff,
