Nice place that is almost fully vegan.
Read moreWent here for dinner, and the food was really inventive and interesting. Very vegetable centered, well cooked and the plates had a lot of different components. Really not something I would cook often at home, and it was really nice to try. I especially loved the 'bananas' desert, so tasty!
Also very friendly staff. Looking forward to going here again sometime.

A green oasis on a busy city street - Edit
Lovely spot. Had the Thai coconut soup which was great, and the 5 ways of cauliflower which was a bit disappointing (some great varieties but too much raw cauliflower). Well worth another try though.

Toffe plek om te lunchen of ‘borrelen’. Hele lieve mensen. Niet alleen is alles plantaardig, maar ook het is ook nog glutenvrij. Zeker de labneh proberen, die is zoooo lekker.

Cosy café perfect for an afternoon break - Edit
Gys is a very cosy place, perfect for an afternoon break, an indulgent lunch with wholesome ingredients or to come and read or work for a little bit. This time I went for a dirty chai with coconut milk which was very flavorful. Shout out to the friendly staff (and the singing waiter😉).

We visited at peak hour and restaurant GYS did everything right. Even perfect I might say. Yet, I decided to title this review “above average”. Here’s why…
Read moreAfter several months of lockdown, this was the first weekend restaurants in The Netherlands were allowed to open again. Therefore, it was pretty hard to make a reservation for any restaurant at all! However, vegetarian restaurant GYS in Utrecht has two locations, arranged for extra tables and seats, hired extra personnel and went all out. Needless to say, the place was pack jammed!
Yet, the staff didn’t seem stressed and in fact paid personal and kind attention to every customer. A good thing, because they had something to explain. The actual paper menu in the restaurant had changed from the one on the website and everything I selected from the website was removed from the menu in the restaurant, so I needed some advice.
One reason for the title “above average” is the menu. GYS doesn’t serve complicated meals, but instead had simple dishes like burgers, nachos and sandwiches. It’s all one step above cafeteria food, and not nearly as classy and a multi course meal in other restaurants. Also, the menu is very limited. During our stay it listed just four mains.
We started with the “loaded nachos” (caution: only vegan on request), which according to my friend were the best nachos she ever had. For mains we ordered the “classic burger” and “rendang”. The classic burger is as close to a meat burger as one can get in presentation, taste and texture. It comes with some vegetables on the side. “Rendang” is an Indonesian dish with rice, vegetables and (fake) meat. It’s well balanced in flavors and makes for an interesting meal.
Despite the fact that the place was busier than ever before, all of our meals were spot on and were served quickly. Presentation was good, nothing was under or overcooked, nothing was too salty or bland. All ingredients seem to be of decent quality as well.
So why the title “above average”? Because that’s what GYS seems to aim at. The menu is rather simple, just above snack level. The decoration of the restaurant is simple. This is not the place to impress friends or dates, or to sit for an evening of fine dining. GYS is decent vegetarian food at a decent price, better than the average home meal. In other words: above average.

I can’t count how many times I’ve eaten at this place. The vegan rendang, ramen, kapsalon as diner or the hummus, noodle salad or club sandwich as lunch. Everything tastes delicious!

Heerlijk eten, en nog gezond ook. Echt alles is super lekker! Kruidig, de sausjes. Perfect. Een flinke portie groen. Vegan, biologisch en ook glutenvrij. Pure winst voor iedereen. Ook mijn non-vegan vriend was onder de indruk, we hebben echt genoten. En hoewel het eten wordt opgediend alsof je in een classy restaurant zit, is de sfeer relaxed en val je niet uit de toon als je in je ontspannen outfit neerploft. Toetjes raad ik ook aan, neem de plank met meerdere toetjes en neem wat je niet op krijgt, mee naar huis in een doosje. Kun je er morgen weer van genieten. Wij komen snel weer eten!

Mijn eerste ervaring met een vegetarisch/ veganistisch restaurant. Heel lekker gegeten in een gezellig kader, veel nieuwe smaken leren kennen. Ik kom hier zeker terug wanneer ik nog eens in Utrecht ben.

Usually I visit the other GYS but this is also a lovely location. Next to a busy street but they created a ver cosy area.
Read moreAs usual there were great vegan options. We had the vegan buffalo wings and the sauce was delicious! The vegan truffle sandwich was nice but a bit small. We were happy that we had the cauliflower as well. For drinks we had a chai late, which was okay but not super flavourful.
Staff was very lovely and helpful. Even offering to bring our order outside so we could enjoy the sun while waiting. Very happy that they were willing to put the take away in our own containers.

Waiter was unfriendly and kept forgetting or messing up our orders. When we asked for the orders again, he did not apologize and for some things we had to ask several times even though it was not busy. Food is okay but we were expecting better.

This really is an excellent place. Confirmed fully vegetarian as of late 2019 after a successful trial. It’s virtually vegan to be honest. The fish and chips was sensational served with a stunning tartare sauce and a light side salad. I found this to be good value at €15. A hefty club sandwich was brim full with tomato, seitan, oyster mushroom bacon, avocado and mayo. Again, fair value at €10.50. A couple of glasses of dry rose wine earmarked a hugely successful visit.

Dinner (I was by myself) and ordered the satay with seitan. Absolute nomz! They have several dishes with tempeh, tofu if seitan. Which I think is great.

As a vegan celiac i can really appreciate their gluten and animal products free cake pieces. They are really yummy (but onfortunately on the expensive side) and their menu changes every so often. It is an organic restaurant.
