Surprisingly Delicious - Edit
There was only one vegan option on the menu, but it was surprisingly very good. They have a vegetarian gumbo with rice and a type of bean that changes each night. It didn't sound too exciting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved this place! It has a lot of charm and is a fun place to be. Expect a bit of a wait, as it is very popular.

Vegan Gumbo Yumbo - Edit
Two days later and I’m still thinking about the vegan gumbo. The flavor was spot on and memorable. I loved this place. Worth the wait.

Get there early - Edit
We ate Saturday evening we waited about 15 min. The vegetarian gumbo was delicious and the black bean soup was good. The garlic hot sauce on the table added a little kick to our meal. Once we finished at left after 7p the line was outside the door and about 20 deep.

Fantastic Vegan Creole-style experience! - Edit
Quick service, pleasant atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating, and more vegan options than one would expect at a gumbo restaurant. The Gumbo Z'Herbes and black bean and rice creole-style vegetarian special were delicious! Also, our waiter bore a striking resemblance to the actor Cillian Murphy lol.

great gumbo! - Edit
Didn't taste like what I remembered gumbo to be, but the Vegan gumbo was good in its own right. We also ordered white beans, which was also really good. Ask for the vegan menu and ask for no butter.

Good veg*n option in the French quarter - Edit
New Orleans is a great food town but the options for vegans or even vegetarians are still shockingly limited. We went to the Gumbo Shop with our family as it seemed from the posted menu like one of the best bets for Creole food in the area for a mixed party of vegans and pescatarians. We loved this place. They have a special dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu with a good selection of options. Our server was outstanding and completely “got it” even to the point of telling us without being asked when she brought the bread to the table before the meal that it was completely vegan. Food was fabulous all around. It’s not at all a vegan restaurant and choices are of course limited but for the location and the style of cuisine this is a great option.

A few vegan options - Edit
There is a separate menu with vegetarian and vegan options on it. I had the vegan gumbo. It was pretty plain but not bad.

Somewhat disappointing - Edit
There is only one vegetarian option on the menu, which I believe changes, and the description on the menu is no longer accurate. For me it was a rather uneventful black bean soup with a side of white rice. It lacked any flavor other than the black beans.

Solid lunch option - Edit
Yes they only have one vegetarian option, but I had the white beans and rice; and it was delicious. The French bread was delicious (is it vegan?). Also had salad. So it was a great lunch.

Vegan options, but not exciting ones - Edit
The vegan "Po Boy" which was described as "amazing" by the server was just grilled veggies. No sauce or seasoning. They were cooked well, at least, but not worth $9. I went to eat somewhere else afterward.

Awful Gumbo - Edit
The gumbo was the only vegan option, and it was absolutely awful. It was made up of a tasteless broth, canned beans, dried mushrooms and colorless greens. I couldn't finish it without feeling sick. Eat here at your own risk.

pretty good - Edit
The food was pretty good. The menu has no vegan options, you have to ask for the vegan menu. The sever was not sure that the vegan menu was vegan but was extremely diligent in checking. The service was shockingly fast

Food was ok but on the more pricy side - Edit
The food was ok. Not much to choose from. We got the small cup of gumbo. It was poorly seasoned. Then the vegetarian meal that was black beans and rice, again it was ok. And we also got the vegetarian poboy, it was really just a baguette filled with grilled veggies. For the price it is not a good option in my opinion. There are many more vegan options better than this.

Vegan Gumbo-ish - Edit
The vegan gumbo didn't have any okra in it, and was very brothy. It had collards, rice, mushrooms, onions, celery. If you like soup, you'll like this. Kind of over-priced for what you are getting, buy if you are in the quarter, it is super convenient. I guess that is what you pay for. If it isn't raining, sit in the tiny courtyard and hang with the birdy friends.

GUMBO - Edit
After searching the French Quarter over for vegan options, this was an excellent choice. For those of you who know, there aren't many options so I was really happy to find one and GUMBO at that. Our server was very friendly, we were seated in a terrace, and the soup was delicious. I would say definitely come try this place! Great veg options, beautiful setting.

Fantastic Service - Edit
The service a The Gumbo Shop was superb. The server was well-versed in vegetarian and gluten-free parlance and was very personable. I wish I could rate the food better, but it was only so-so. I had the vegetarian gumbo (obvious choice, right?), but it was a bit bland and didn't have any okra. The location is great, just off Jackson Square. They don't take reservations, but there is plenty of room and we did not have to wait for a table for 7.

Limited and Bland Options, But Otherwise Pleasant - Edit
There was the gumbo z'herbes mentioned by others, as well as a veg special the day we stopped in (black beans and rice). Service was pleasant but slow, and the food was unbelievably bland for any restaurant, but especially a gumbo joint in New Orleans. Happily, there was hot sauce and Cajun spice on every table. It was needed. My hurricane was great, as was the warm, fresh bread.

poor service, meal was "meh" - Edit
Only go here as last resort. Hubby said his sampler entree platter and chicken gumbo was so-so. I wasn't impressed with the black beans and rice. The gumbo de herbes or whatever was watery and bland. Poor service also made this a bad experience. We had to ask for bread, then butter, basic stuff. Waiter was flippant and rude.

Ask for vegan options - they have more than those on the menu! However, I had the two on the menu (vegetarian of the day + gumbo z/herbs) and they were amazing! Came back the next day! Super friendly staff!

Gumbo... - Edit
The vegetarian Gumbo of the day was not very interesting, though it changes everyday we might just have been unlucky. The sides were very small and quite expensive. The quality was all right, but we won't be going back.

Limited but delicious vegan / veg options - Edit
I picked this restaurant because it was a place to get authentic NOLA food where a couple vegans could get food and the majority of our group (carnivores) could also find things they were excited about. Everyone was very satisfied with our food, and there are many dishes on teh menu that are a bargain ($10 or under). There were only 2 vegan options - black beans and rice, and a soup. We had both, and I thought they were delicious, very filling, and nutritious. If you want a place with a full menu of vegan options, look elsewhere - but this is a wonderful compromise and a good way to try some authentic food.
Read moreThe restaurant itself is also very attractive, located in an old building in the french quarter with very high ceilings and plenty of charm.

An Authentic New Orleans meal vegan style! - Edit
After three very rough days in MS, I was anxious for my one day in NOLA, a city that I love but hadn't been to since we turned V. Using my trust HC app, I picked this place for lunch. Since I couldn't decide between the black beans and rice or the herb gumbo, my waitress suggested I have a cup of each. After making sure the bread was vegan, we were presented with a freshly baked, warm, crusty loaf of French bread that was everything a proper French bread should be. When my meal arrived, (my mom has crab cakes, so good for omnis), the black beans were so delicious I had to slow myself down! Slow cooked with true Creole spices and peppers, presented beautifully- I almost bought the cookbook just to get the recipe! The Gumbo was very good as well- not quite as awesome as the black beans but still amazing. Collard greens, onions, slight heat-- vegans, the is where you need to eat when you want to have a true gumbo experience in Nawlins!!!!

Amazing! - Edit
I visited here with my mom while in New Orleans, and we both had the vegetarian special of the day: white beans and rice. We also tried the Gumbo Z'Herbes. Both were very good! The white beans and rice were cooked and spiced wonderfully, and the gumbo was delicious. I would definitely come back!
