Authentic, seasonal and great vegan options - Edit
My non vegan friend introduced me to Gujarati Rasoil as one of her favourite London hangouts. It serves traditional, wholesome and vegetarian food (with a nice selection of vegan options)

Even with all the doors and windows open, it was a bit stuffy inside, though it had a very laidback atmosphere. It didn’t look like what you would expect from a “traditional Indian restaurant” but was in fact felt very light and modern.
In reality, though, we were there for the food not for the decor; and they sure delivered. We chose a selection of starters and mains (of which you can choose a small size for £6 or a large for £12) and dug in. The prices were a little on the expensive side – with the bill coming to close to £25 per person, without alcohol – but a nice treat non the less!
Considering I practically live off Indian and Asian food, I was most excited about trying dishes I hadn’t tried before. Out of the 3 starters and 3 mains on offer that night – did I mention the menu changes regularly to reflect what’s in season?! – at least one was vegan and another could be made vegan! The small plates were still enough for sharing
I was very impressed with the food and the service – just a shame about the heat (though that couldn’t be helped!) I would definitely recommend a visit for vegans, veggies and meat eaters alike!:)
Pros: Local and seasonal , authentic , Affordable
Cons: Uncomforable on hot days!

This is an all vegetarian Indian restaurant but it's heavily anglicized. I'm Indian American and thoroughly enjoyed this interpretation of Gujarati food. It wasn't lacking in flavor at all, and the presentation was great. Much more approachable for the western mind than the typical hole-in-the-wall. If you're looking for that, go elsewhere. If you want a good meal and a unique, thoughtful dining experience, this is worth a visit. There are some good vegan options (no ghee or cheese in many dishes).

If you're planning a night out in Dalston (voted 'the coolest place in Britain' by Italian Vogue), don't miss Gujarati Rasoi, tucked down a side street a few doors from the Jazz Bar.

The atmosphere is relaxed and staff are friendly. Currently quite cramped, the space is due to double in size in October 2013. Hopefully they won't expand the prices as well, which already come as a shock (£9-10 for a main dish, excluding rice or bread). Otherwise, this is a wonderful place, and perfectly located for a night at the Vortex, Arcola Theatre, Cafe Oto, Rio Cinema or Dalston Superstore (and many other bars and clubs).
