This place is outstanding in so many ways:
- Helpful pandemic best-practices like kiosks for ordering; clearly separated clean styluses from used styluses for using the kiosks; contactless payments -- apple pay -- and more
- Clearly labeled vegan options, including for their cafe / coffee shop area, bakery area, and order-based hot bar
-Compostable utensils available individually
- Fun, thoughtfully crafted fresh smoothies and fresh juice blends
Good Earth is an independent organic grocer with two locations - founded in 1969 and celebrating Rachel Carson ("Silent Spring"). The original location was in Fairfax - and is moved to a new Fairfax location.
Both stores offer plenty of vegan options in the deli case / prepared foods., baked goods and all the groceries you need.
It's what you'd expect from Marin County (and WF only dreams of being this awesome).
June 2022 Update: hot bar hasn’t returned since COVID.
So many good vegan eats in the hot bar and the cold grab and go case. They can make vegan sandwiches and burritos in the deli too. They have a large bulk section, lots of great snacks, a few vegan baked goods (if you like ginger, get the ginger biscuit and thank me later), a coffee bar that makes smoothies too, etc.
This is a great place to stop by before or after a hike in Marin County. I have popped into this place numerous times when I lived in SF and am always pleased with their vegan and health/wellness offerings. I stopped by yesterday after a hike an had many options to choose from for lunch whether it be deli items, sandwiches, bakery, grocery. I loved the vegan truffle potato salad this time...though they have so many other vegan things to try too. They're loaded with kombucha options too.
Of the Bay Area grocery stores that aren’t 100% vegetarian, Good Earth feels like one of the most welcoming to vegans. They tend to be a bit on the pricier side, but the quality is good and I appreciate that they ensure everything is organic and au attention to trying to get more local sources. Produce is generally very good, and apples are one thing I find at better prices here than elsewhere (and they’re so so good!). I’m partial to the original Fairfax location, but this one has almost as much to offer.
Be sure and stop by the baked goods section. There are many vegan goodies, all clearly marked, and lots of amazing vegan cakes, sold whole or by the slice (my personal favorite is the chocolate hazelnut). Lots of gluten free options too.
Clearly marked vegan options with an epic made to order meal section! Love the wok bowls, grilled tempeh sandwich, hot bar options, juice bar, and pastry case!
best vegan food around for breakfast, lunch or dinner - Edit
I know, a grocery store doesn't sound fun for lunch or dinner, but huge cafe setting indoors and outdoors and best vegetarian buffet around. Also pizza, burritos, bowls, all with vegan choices. Home made almond milk in coffe shop and wonderful cappuccinos. My favorite place to eat anytime.
