Did not disappoint! - Edit
I don't know why I waited this long to come here since I was a huge fan of Farm Spirit. Anyway I've recently had lunch here twice and got to try different things. All the sandwiches were amazing, but if I had to choose a favorite it'd be the tempeh hoagie. The burger wasn't too far behind but it was a little bit messier to eat. I also loved the potato salad. The Northwest bowl could be a good choice if you want something lighter. Housemade kefir was just what we needed on a hot summer day. Portion sizes were just right. I'm definitely adding this place to my Portland restaurant roster!

Umami explosion - Edit
Lived up to the hype. We tried the BBQ bacon burger, Fermenter burger, potato salad. Burgers are bigger than pics make them look. Housemade black lentil millet tempeh was the star with its miso mushroom onion flavors & excellent texture. Don't usually care much for slaw but theirs is irresistible. Looking forward to trying their famous greens & beans bowl next time. Some sauces to-go for sale in their fridge.

Great! - Edit
Solid, healthy-ish, and creative food. Love the tempeh burger. It's really well-crafted, doesn't fall apart, and is a nice blend of elevated flavors. Really good bun too.

Bright cafe with nice dishes - Edit
Good service and we were able to sample some of their homemade drinks which was nice. The food is fresh and healthy, and just a tad on the expensive side

Fermenter makes you feel good. - Edit
I love this place so much. They’re incredibly dedicated to producing local, healthy and delicious food. While you may look at the menu and think “tempeh? That’s old school…” I promise you, the flavors you get here are mind blowing. The work and passion that goes into this food shows. Highly recommend!

Clearly denoted gluten free items and celiac safe. Amazing food and drinks! If you can, you should take some pickles home with you. They are the best.

Healthy and delicious - Edit
All vegan restaurant that makes their own fermented items. We had sandwiches, a bowl, a burger and a large salad. It was all so so good and fresh! They check your vaccination card if you eat in so that’s nice. Their house made kombucha was so so good.

Another level - Edit
From some of the same minds that brought us Portobello and Farm Spirit; this place is BANANAS!! Everything on the menu is in some way fermented… and it’s all so rich and delicious. Talk about decadent flavors and umami and then the good gut biome loving bacteria that really seals the deal. Top favorites are the koji beet Reuben, BBQ Burger, bbq oyster mushroom sando, all of the krauts, kombuchas and the specials are always on 🔥

BBQ lion's mane and kombucha slushies! - Edit
Fermenter is some of the best vegan fare that Portland had to offer. Although a little bit pricey, the food is downright scrumptious, a good amount of the ingredients being locally sourced and utilizing a fermented/cultured component which is taken to a whole new level. The menu is always unique, creative and oftentimes changes weekly, with a few mainstays. Seriously, where else can you find a bbq grilled lion's mane mushroom sando with fermented veggies on top, chased with a kombucha slushie! This place is next level! You gotta go!

This place is amazing! - Edit
The food and everything at Fermenter is one-of-a-kind and absolutely delicious. Their tempeh is life changing and the bowl is one of the most healthy and flavor packed things I’ve ever eaten. One of the best vegan places in Portland.

Excellent quality and all vegan - Edit
A few things had sold out before I got to Fermenter (which I think speaks to it's popularity in the community and quality). I ordered the Potato Salad and Green Side Salad. Both were excellent. The Green Side Salad was very well dressed and the Potato Salad was so big I was eating it for three days. It was the best potato salad I've had in a while. Can definitely recommend both items.

THE. BEST. VEGGIE. BURGER - Edit
This is the best veggie burger I’ve had in my life and certainly the best in the city. It’s made from whole plant based ingredients and fills you up in the way that still feels health, but is seasoned and textured like comfort food fit for any bbq. Not to mention, their tempeh bacon is absolutely UNTOUCHED by any restaurant. I’ll bet you any amount of money on that one 🤪

Straight up fabulous - Edit
I don’t know where to start! It’s a good thing I don’t live within walking distance of this place because I would eat here way too much. The mastermind behind Fermenter is the same as Farm Spirit, so you know you can expect high-quality and local ingredients. The menu includes 2 bowls and 2 sandwiches. The tempeh is made in house and better than any tempeh I’ve ever tasted. They no longer do the tasting menu just FYI. Four seats at the bar, but they offer seating next door at the coffee shop, which is an awesome concept. If you take your food to go, you will have a to-go cup with a $2 deposit. Bring it back the next time you go in! Seriously, do yourself a favor and go eat here!

As ethical and delicious as you can get - Edit
In short, I love this place. I often end up working nearby, so it's got the benefit of convenience, but there's so much more I love.
Read moreThe food is delicious (no surprise, being that this is from the same dude who brought us Farm Spirit and formerly Portobello): their bowl is fab, their sauerkraut is astonishingly lovely, their (new sandwiches are fabulous), and the house-made drinks are delicious and change all the time. It's very much a workshop and food playground; Aaron, the chef, will happily tell you about where anything came from, and who grew it/made it. The specific dishes and ingredients change all the time, as the seasons change.
It's also about as ethical as you can get under capitalism: their manifesto covers the front window, and is worth a read, but if you don't have time, they're really committed to sourcing as much local food as possible (which, for instance, means there's currently no soy there [!!], since we only grow black soy in Oregon, and it's not always available), paying their workers fairly (they're tip-free), and reducing waste as much as possible (they only do takeout in reusable containers, with a deposit).
The food is also probably healthy? But what I want for lunch is delicious, quick, and hearty, and they deliver on all those fronts. I just wish they were open more often!
Pros: all vegan, virtually all local and house-made, super friendly staff, tip-free because they work to pay workers fairly
Cons: the sign outside can be hard to read, four seats inside, limited opening days

Love this place! - Edit
Just tried the spot for the first time yesterday and loved it! Their kombucha is also delicious. They are 100% plant based, and also don’t use any tropical ingredients (because of the environmental and human rights issues that come along with them). They also don’t serve processed vegan versions of non-vegan items (which tend to be pretty unhealthy and gross). Great to find a creative, socially conscious and delicious place to grab some vegan food.
