The best fries in Ghent!

Very good fries, very large portions. The snacks are also very yummy.
But ... it's very crowded very early on. They have been named "the best friterie", and a lot of people come from far to eat fries here.

Cons: very busy

Good portions and value for money

The best vegan junk food place I’ve been to, and it goes without saying that it has the best fries too! The small portion of fries cost 2.30€ but it was MASSIVE to the point I couldn’t finish it - and I always finish my food. Sauces cost extra but are also generous servings, although it got sickening really fast. I also enjoyed the vegan bitterballen (fried fake meat balls) and kaaskroket (croquet oozing with melted vegan cheese), both of which I recommend.

I went at mid-morning but by the time I left, the joint was beginning to become crowded, mostly students. Popular with vegans, vegetarians and non-vegans and non-vegetarians alike.

Favorite frietkot ever

Since discovering this place offers vegan fries and a huge menu of vegan fry snacks, I've been here 4 times in 3 months. I've loved the vegan stoofvlees, the vegan bitterballen, the vegan kaaskroket, the vegan sauces! Fries here are delicious and perfectly crispy.

Pros: Huge vegan junk food menu, Often changing specials, fast service even when busy

Cons: Get SUPER busy on weekends evenings, also serves meat

Good

Very good! We had the veg bitterballen, the Hawaiian burger and the small fries (which we had a hard time finishing). We are definitely coming back to try other things!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, cheap for Ghent

Good guac burger

I took away the tofu burger with guacamole in fresh bread (triangle of ciabatta-like bread, which I understand is Turkish) with lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, vegan mayo. Vegan-fried fries and tartar-like sauce. Total €8.20. The “small” order of fries was huge.

Pros: Good guacamole-topped burger, fresh bread, vegan fries

Cons: not open all day

Such a great frituur

It's a really great place, 10/10 I recommend. When we got there the line was huge so I'm sure it is very successful! Has many vegetarian and vegan options like croquettes, falafel and burgers, of course the fries are vegan too. Offers many vegan sauces, vegan mayo is quite tricky to do right, many times we ordered it it was really bland or unbeatable but this one, oh man it was done right! The only minus is that the vegan burger are not served in regular bun but a Turkish bread.

Pros: Many vegans options , Very tasty food and sauces , Fries done right

Cons: Turkish bread burger

Fried Goodness

This is the place if you're a vegan in need of some good Belgian Frituur food.
They have lots of vegan options which are clearly labeled, so it's actually quite hard to choose what to order, especially because everything is so affordable.
Portions are big and are good for sharing, so bring a friend and dig in!

best fast food

I am so glad we have the frietketel in Gent, couldn't live without it! I need my fast junk food from time to time and only eat vegan mayonnaise with my fries! They have large portions, affordable price, lots of vegan options (burgers, falafels, stoofvlees, kaaskroket, etc).

Best vegan junk food I've had

I loved this place, especially because vegan junk food is so hard to come by and I am a trash panda so this hit the spot. The bitterballen were great and the fries portions huge, with a wide variety of vegan sauces. I don't like their burgers as much as the vegan snacks.

Best frituur for vegans in Ghent

We get our weekly sinner's meal from here regularly and with an average of 16 euro's for two, a big variety of options for vegan snacks and burgers (always mention it) and quick service, this might be the best junk food joint around. We're always stuffed afterwards and we're glad that these guys are around. Be sure to plan ahead, because the queue stretches into the street from 6 to 8.
I've heard that they fry in palm oil, which is sad because of its origins. Unlike other reviewers I wouldn't stop going there, this place is the bomb. I might just ask if they'd be able to deliver as good a service with different frying oil. The fries are truly supreme, I'm guessing the use palm oil is a strategic decision to get the best of both worlds (great fries and vegan-friendly), but it's worth asking.

Pros: Price vs. quality on point, Quick service, Huge vegan variety

Cons: palm oil (see remarks)

Big and tasty!

Nice place, close to the center of Ghent. Large selection of vegan burgers and toppings. Friendly atmosphere. Be aware the chips portions are enormous, I have a huge appetite, but I am glad I opted for a small portion! On a Thursday you get 10% discount because it's veggie day in Ghent

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service

Tasty vegan fast food options

Large vegan menu, the crispy hawaii burger with pineapple is particularly delicious. This place is very busy!

Tip - order a small fries to share - it will probably still be too much food!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Vegan fast food

Best vegan fast food option in Belgium

Lots of veg*n options and everything is clearly marked.

!! Don't forget to ask for vegan bread when ordering burgers since you don't get it automatically.

Their vegan "beef" stew sauce (I think it says "vegetarische stoofvleessaus" on the menu) is delicious. Beef stew is a local specialty by the way. Fries come in huge portions so come hungry!

There are several secondary schools in the vicinity so it tends to get really crowded with students around lunchtime (12:00~13:00).

Pros: Vegan "beef" stew sauce (!), Lots of veg*n options, Fries come in huge portions

Cons: Also serves meat

Tasty fast food

Always a treat to see vegan options marked on a menu, even if it was totally in Dutch. Went here for dinner while visiting Ghent -- tasty vegan burgers and fries (though there are better fries to be had). It was nice to be able to get Veganaise for our fries!

Amazing vegan fast food!

I came here this week with a group of friends and was blown away by the range of vegan options available here, all clearly marked on the menu. I went for a vegan burger with tropical sauce and pineapple (the Crispy-Hawaii), although it took me a long time to choose with so many delicious-sounding options available, especially the hazelnut burger. My friends also had a number of different vegan and vegetarian options, and everyone really enjoyed it. The chip portion sizes were huge, so we ended up sharing one small portion of chips between two people. I would definitely come here again for another fast food vegan burger!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Friendly, helpful staff, Tasty food

Cons: Not 100% veg

Well worth your time

I like this place very very much. First and foremost, though the menu is entirely Dutch, they were one of the few places in Ghent that clearly identified all of their vegan options. You can actually find vegetarian "frites" places all over the city, and it is easy to find veggie burgers, but very few of these are vegan, and it iis only this restaurant that clearly identifies these with a star on the menu, which made purchases easier. I also loved that for all the vegan burgers (which were good, though hardly the "best" ever as a previous reviewer said - all veggie burgers in Belgium are commercially frozen burgers sold en masse, and tasty, though hardly "amazing") they come with special vegan tartare sauce (delicious) and on turkish pide bread. Yum! The fries were very good, though not the best I had in Belgium, and for god's sake, order the small. The portions are incredibly generous. A small here is the equivalent of an extra large elsewhere. Very reasonable pricing for what you get, which explains why there is often a line. I would definitely run back here. Get the Hawaii Burger, which, as you'd imagine, comes with grilled pineapple.

Pros: Great value, Menu clearly identified

Please keep in mind that Happy Cow limits Vegetarian friendly restaurants to four cows - a policy I disagree with. Otherwise, I and the other reviewers would undoubtedly have given this deserving spot five.

Best vegan burgers ever!!

If you want cheap, tasty vege/ vegan fastfood then De Frietketel is your place! Although this places serves meat, the vege menu is much larger than the meaty one. There are around 20 different vege burgers/ snacks. So far I've tried only two burgers, and they were both really delicious, and the fries were great too (also a very generous portion!) Also, the vegan items are marked by an asterisk.

All in all I've tried a lot of vegan junk food and burgers, and I can say these burgers are the best/ most authentic I've tasted. Don't go to Frietketel however if you like 'healthy' tasting vege burgers. I think everything here is deep fried :)

Pros: YUM, CHEAP, Large vege menu

Cons: Not open on weekends

Perfect take-out!

Normally when I travel to new and exciting cities, I don't like to eat at omni restaurants if there are veggie restaurants available. I made an exception for De Frietketel, however, and I'm glad I did.
The veggie options greatly outnumber the meat options. We ordered 3 burgers, a mountain of fries, and some meatballs. This was the perfect kind of food to take back to our comfy hotel room and eat in our pajamas.
The burgers were amazing. I loved the vegan tartar sauce. The fries were wonderful as well, and there were a TON of them. The only thing I wasn't wild about were the meatballs. They come with 2 different sauces and I chose stew sauce. Perhaps ketchup sauce would have been better.
I'll certainly miss this place now that I'm back home!

Huge selection of veggie burgers!

The Frietketel is a great place to go for veggie burgers and fries. The portions of fries are all huge. They have a large selection of veggie burgers, although not all of them are vegan. Ask the staff which are vegan. My favorite is the Crispy Hawaii burger (ask for vegan sauce since the cocktail sauce isn't vegan). Most vegan burgers come with vegan tartar sauce. They make vegan burgers on special vegan bread, so make sure to tell them if you're vegan. They also have some non-burger items, like soyanuggets and stoofvlees (Belgian "beef" stew). I believe all the staff speak English, and they are very friendly. It can get very busy at times, so be prepared to wait.

Pros: Veggie Burgers, Fries , Great service

Cons: Sometimes crowded
