Unique experience - Edit
The eating hall was easy to find on the right side. But first you need to walk by it to get your bowls(take 3) and chopsticks from cupboards in the dish room on the left side of the round gate. The food is dealt out to your bowls. We had three different vegetable dishes on top of each other put into the same bowl and two kinds of pickled vegetables in the second bowl. At this point everyone was already eating. Then they dealt out some rice into the third bowl. I was about half way done with my cooked vegetables when I noticed they were serving soup. I moved my pickled veggies to another bowl and got a big ladle of pumpkin soup. The food was tasty and refreshing.
Read moreThey circle in the food hall with the big pots of food so you can ask for more (by nodding or somehow silently signaling when they are in front of you) but you are expected to eat everything. The 5RMB was collected during the meal. I had the banknote ready in my pocket.
During the meal there is no talking. It was nice to eat in silence with everyone. Someone started talking and the prayer leader immediately told them to keep quiet 🤫
After the meal you grab your empty bowls and chopsticks and take them back to the dish room where you wash them and put them back into the cupboard.
I don't speak Chinese but I just followed others and got by😇

Great food great experience - Edit
Unmissable in Chengdu really. Food is a step above your average Buddhist fare and the price is surely unbeatable. Come hungry. Nb most people take 3 bowls - it's a bit of a race to make space with 2

Really pleasant experience. - Edit
When I first read about this place I felt really skeptical. But when I came to Chengdu I wanted an adventure and here it is. I came here an hour early so I went to the monastery. It felt really old and ancient. So I get to the nunnery and started to follow the direction description and locals. I met a Spanish guy there as well as 2 other westerners. We put 5¥ in front of us and waited. There were some singing before and after the meal. I got a bowl of rice, a white flour bun, a couple of vegetable dishes and a broad bean soup. It didn’t look appetizing when they were serving it but it tasted delicious!

Great experience - Edit
I went there twice when I was in Chengdu.
Read moreThe first time some friendly locals showed me how it works.
Both times I was the only foreigner but a lot of locals were there as well.
The second time I had to buy a voucher right next door to the dining hall. Instead of the money I placed that in front of me during the lunch and it was collected by one of the nuns.
The food is good and plenty.
Pros: Great experience decent, vegan food

Great food and ceremony - Edit
We were a bit unsure about it when we got here but the instructions about what to do were spot on. We did exactly as said, we left the 5 yuan per person on the table after we were seated with our two bowls per person, one for the rice and the other for the vegetables. There was a ceremonial singing before the food was served. They served the nuns first and we all had to remain silent during the meal. The food was no frills but you get a lot of it for what you pay. The overall experience makes it all worth it.

Chengdu Aidao Nunnery - Edit
I Love this place, the food and the Atmosphere. If life didn't get in the way I would come daily for lunch, the only meal served to the public. The food is totally Vegan, healthy, wholesome, balanced, varied, very tasty and cheaper than what it would cost to make the food at home, 5 RMB (80 cents). Right from the striking of the Fish Gong and Chimes out front at just before 11:40 through the non talking meal to the cleaning and replacing of the bowls and chopsticks one used this was a delightful meal and experience. It is a shame more people don't know of this "Temple" as I find it more Artistic then the more crowded Wenshu Monastery 2 1/2 blocks away. Then again, maybe it is much better this way. Do yourself a favor and get here by 11:30 to have lunch and then enjoy the walk through the Wenshu area to the Monastery
